Herbert's Stores operated from c.1886 to 1970 in Orbost and also in Cann River. In Orbost, the main store was located on the s.e. corner of Nicholson Street and Ruskin Street. A feature of the store was the Lamson Cash-Carry mechanism which transported money and receipts to and from a central cashier. This was a rapid-wire mechanism attached to the ceiling of the shops. These items are significant because of their association with the Herbert's Stores in Orbost. Also, these itemns are a rare survivors of the Lamson cash-carry mechanisms which were installed in many larger shops in Australia during the first half of the 20th century.A collection of items from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Lancelot took over the store. Lancelot died in 1911. In 1918, following the death of adjacent shop-owner George Temple, the Herbert family purchased that shop. Progressively Herberts Snowy River Stores grew into a department store of several shops along Nicholson St. They also had small shops at Cann River, Noorinbee and Genoa which were run by members of the family, as well as a carrying business and fuel outlets. Lancelot died on 2/6/1911 and his wife Martha [died 1945] are buried in a joint grave in Orbost Cemetery. (info. Noreen and Lindsay Thomson). This 1911 Invoice from Lancelot Herbert of Snowy River Stores is made out to R P Cameron. Mr Cameron was a member of another early family in the Orbost/Snowy River district. This item is associated with a well-known Orbost business which started in 1888 and finally closed in c.1970. it is an example of book-keeping in the early 20th century and is a useful research tool.A white paper account with black print and red lines. Charlie was born at Newmerella on 13/03/1908, the eldest of 7 children of Charles William Joiner and Louisa O'Neill. He farmed in the Orbost district and at Hillside near Bairnsdale. Charlie past away on 6th March 1998, aged 89, at the Bairnsdale Hospital. HERBERT & Co. was one of the earliest stores in Orbost, located on the corner of Ruskin and NIcholson Streets, closing in 1970 and demolished in 1975. HERBERT & Co. also had stores at Noorinbee and Cann River, along with other business's including several garages.This item is significant because it is a functional and a promotional item relating to Herbert and Co. whose owners had numerous businesses in east Gippsland from 1890's to 1970's.Two flat wooden lengths 23cms long and 2 cms wide, lined on inside of hanger with red felt material, connect by a silver coloured metal piece joining the two wooden lengths to form a hanger shape which can open and close to secure item to be hung. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store when he died in 1917. This hessian bag was likely used for packaging and transporting goods from Cunninghame (later Lakes Entrance) to Orbost. George Temple was one of Orbost's earliest storekeepers. This hessian bag represents the earliest form of transport of goods, possibly by boat or maybe by wagon from Cunninghame to orbost. A large piece of hessian - probably an opened bag which was used for sending goods. The material is pinned around cardboard. It has black lettering stencilled on it."1850 G. The Dayton Scale Company, originally known as the Computing Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. It was part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company formed in 1911, and became an IBM division in 1933. The Dayton Scale Division was eventually sold to the Hobart Manufacturing Company when IBM decided to stop marketing scales to retail stores. The Computing Scale Company of Dayton was operated from 1891-1914 by two businessmen from Dayton, Ohio who purchased patents on the recently invented computing scale. It was merged with other companies to become the forerunner company for IBM. On July 20 1897 Mr CC Hobart & Herbert L. Johnson formed the Hobart Electrical Manufacturing Company in Troy, Ohio USA. 1915 Hobart continues its growth into the World market, opening a sales office in Australia. It is made from white painted steel with a large metal scoop that sits on 2 steel rods attached to a balance beam connected to a recording mechanism that displays the ‘weight’ in a glass framed gauge. George Temple, born in Yorkshire on 26/2/1832 was of the earliest Orbost storekeepers. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the post office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store when he died in 1918. This item is associated with the very early history of Orbost. George and Mary Temple were early shopkeepers who operated a store opposite the Post Office for many years.
