Postcard shows cable trams and many pedestrians in Collins St. 'The Block' described the buildings and footpaths in the area bounded by Collins St, Elizabeth St, Bourke St and Swanston St. From the early years, this was the commercial heart of Melbourne, where the well-off promenaded (walked) to see and be seen by other notable people and where before cable trams the network of horse omnibuses drove in a loop to collect passenger. Before the telephone, postcards were often used to send brief personal or business messages to others in Melbourne or further afield. Photograph shows a Stephenson built horse omnibus at their factory in New York. It has been sign written for Cobb and Co. F B Clapp ordered the buses from Stephenson’s NY prior to the incorporation of the MTOCo. The original intention was for a partnership to operate the bus services using the Cobb & Co branding. The MTOCo was incorporated shortly after the Collingwood service commenced. The bus would have been re-branded probably before entering service. The Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Company (MTOC) operated a horse tram from the Victoria Bridge cable tram terminus to Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery from 28 December 1887. The site on the north side of High Street, Kew, on the corner of Disraeli Street is now the location of the Kew Recreation Centre. The current (as of 2020) swimming pool was formerly situated further west on the site but was relocated closer to Disraeli Street during the 1980s. Previously, this was the site of a Kew Council depot, and before that a horse tram shed. The horse tram (1887-1914) ran from the Victoria Street Bridge to the entrance of the Boroondara General Cemetery. Rusted horse shoe, excavated from the site of the Kew Recreation Centre on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets in Kew. The shoe was donated by Mr Poulter, City Engineer, City of Kew. Book review from The Courier, titled "Tram ride to success", reviewing a book "The Promise of Gold and its results" written by David Griffiths. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses.
