In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the historic Hunt Club Hotel and surrounding land from ICI. It brought together stories of activists such as Ali Hogg and Gordon Doak, alongside creative champions including Keigh bowery, Ana Kokkinos and Kween Kong, tracing networks of resistance, visibility and cultural change. The exhibition was brought together by the Australian Queer Archives. The Brimbank Council has a formal adopted action plan (2024–2028) that commits the municipality to improving health, safety, inclusion, empowerment, and organisational leadership for LGBTQIA+ residents. This action plan policy is built around the City of Brimbank's LGBTQIA+ Action Plan 2024–2028, that was adopted in November 2023. Walan-walan is a sculpture project at The Bug Rug by Fiona Clarke & Kenneth McKean Walan-walan means circle /round in Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language. The circle has more than one meaning in First Nations cultures. In this case it represents the annual cycle of the year. Other important meanings include as a symbol for a meeting place or a body of water. The sculptures forming the circle are based on animal elemental signs of nature from local Aboriginal seasons. Wumangurruditj - Wombat, Ilk - Eel, Common Brown Butterfly, Gurrborra - Koala, Pied Currawong, Goanna and Buliyong - Bat. Many First Nations stories handed down over thousands of years often included mention of stars. Fiona and Ken have added glow in the dark resin to the artworks. This will gently illuminate them at night giving them a constellatory effect. The circle is relatable in many cultures. Walan-walan is a place where people come to sit and learn or simply to talk and rest in nature. It has many uses but will firstly honour the original First Nations Custodians past, present and future, who took extremely good care of this land for 60k + years. Over the years the hotel has been called various names including the Kororoit Creek Hotel, the Barley Mow Hotel & Plough Hotel. This hotel was described as an old English style wooden building pub consisting of eleven rooms exclusive of a storeroom and kitchen. The current Hunt Club Hotel building was built in 1886 on the former site of the burnt down ruins of the original hotel. It is one of the few 19th Century buildings remaining in the district. The hotel was named by the members of the Melbourne Hunt Club who used the hotel as a base for their deer hunts after leasing land nearby of over 300 acres from Sir W. J. Clarke. The Hunt Club Hotel operated between 1886 and 1911. In 1911, the hotel became a private residence. In 1921, the Australian Explosives and Chemicals Co. Ltd (later ICI Australia) purchased the Hunt Club building. By the 1950s, the Hunt Club building was converted into a research and staff training centre. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the Hunt Club building. In 1985, it officially opened as the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre. Governor and Lieutenant‑Governor visits to suburbs like Albion, Braybrook, Maribyrnong, St. Albans and Sunshine were important civic events because they connected local communities to the highest levels of Victoria’s constitutional and ceremonial leadership. Samuel McCaughey Sunshine Don McKay Isobel McKay The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre ...Sir Samuel McCaughey was a state officeholder, specifically the Lieutenant‑Governor of Victoria. The Governor of Victoria is the Queen / King’s representative in the State of Victoria and is a state level constitutional and ceremonial role. Constitutional duties include giving Royal Assent to Victorian laws, appointing the Premier and Ministers, opening and dissolving Parliament, acting on the advice of the Victorian Government, and ensuring stable, lawful government in the state. Ceremonial duties include attending civic events, visiting suburbs, towns, schools, and community organisations, opening public buildings and infrastructure, presenting awards and honours, supporting charities and volunteer groups. These photographs taken by The Advocate in 1990, when Governor McCaughey and his wife made an official visit to Sunshine. They were welcomed to Sunshine by the Mayor Cr. During the relocation process, the crystal ware was assessed as no longer required and transferred into storage at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre. It was later deemed surplus and discarded by the Council. The Sunshine & District Historical Society recovered the crystal ware from a waste bin at the Hunt Club Community Centre during a clean‑out.The significance of this crystal ware lies in what it represents a rare surviving piece of City of Sunshine civic regalia, an object tied to mayoral authority, municipal ceremony, and the public identity of a pre‑amalgamation council. The table is still in use by the staff at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, Ballarat Road, Deer Park....The table is still in use by the staff at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, Ballarat Road, Deer Park. ...The Shire of Braybrook (1871–1951) was a vast, semi‑rural municipality stretching from Melton to West Melbourne, centred on the old Braybrook village at Solomon’s Ford. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank. It is believed this extension table came from the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office located in Ballarat Road, Deer Park, opposite the Deer Park Hotel. Over the years this extension table was used in the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office Ballarat Road Deer Park, the Shire of Braybrook and City of Sunshine Memorial Hall Hampshire Road Sunshine and in the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices Alexandra Avenue Sunshine. When the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine closed down, this table was were presented to the Sunshine & District Historical Society by the City of Brimbank.
