The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Their public relations employees published booklets to promote the Scheme and the area. In this booklet there are photos of some of the major work constructions with an explanation of how they work and their purpose, a map of the Scheme and an article and photos of tourist facilities and activities that are available.This booklet promotes the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and tourism indicating that tourism was recognised as a new industry for the area. This photo depicts the rescue of three local skiets that became trapped on Mt Bogong during a blizzard and became known as the Cleve Cole tragedy . Mick Hull Howard Michell and Cleve Cole where skiing on Mt Bogong and could not find their way off the mountain via Staircase Spur due to Blizzard conditions and ended up in the Mitta Valley. Howard Michell walked to the Battys farm to get help for his weak and injured friends. Cleve Cole died shortly after arriving at Omeo hospital. This photo is historically significant as it tells the rescue story of this tragedy. The photos are of the people involved which add to the story. Mt Bogong Victoria's highest mountain is accessed from the Kiewa Valley and near by high plains and over shadows Mt Beauty township therefore is a local story. The photo comes from the rescue party which is a rare photo and thus has great interpretive capacity . CWA Tawonga 1946 - 1988 collection of its written history. The C.W.A. aimed to improve the health, welfare and education of women and children in the country. Farmers from the Kiewa Valley drove their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains during summer. Each family had a lease and a hut to stay in. Pack horses were used to carry food and other necessary items for the men while they were away.The Ryder family farmed in the Kiewa Valley and had a grazing lease and hut on the Bogong High Plains where they droe their cattle during summer. Kiewa is a country town located on the Kiewa River. The hotel was built to supply the local people and those beyond with goods. The hotel continued operating until the 1970s.The town, Kiewa, is in the Kiewa Vally. Lawson's store was a busy place in the 1860s supplying goods to settlements up the river valleys. The Kiewa Post Office opened in 1871. Both businesses continued to operate as the town grew, the post office still providing a service to the local community.Black and white photo of C. A. Dederang won the football premiership in 1912. Many country towns had a local football team that played against others in the district. Towns in the Kiewa Valley were big enough to field a football team. A popular destination for the district and visitors with many fly fishermen staying there.Mr and Mrs Crotty were the first publicans of the hotel. Tawonga School No. 2282 was opened on 27th July 1880. From 1881 to 1894 the school was worked half time with School No. 2551 Mullindolingong School.Tawonga State school educated the children who lived in the Kiewa Valley. Butter factory at Kiewa with creameries at Kergunyah and Gundowring met on 14th December 1892 and built it in 1893. Esther was born in 1881, married in 1904 to Dick Hore. They had 8 children all born in Albury. They farmed at Gundowring and then in about 1924 bought the Bogong Hotel in Tawonga. The hotel was very popular with visiting artists eg. Harold Herbert, Charles Wheeler and Sir John Longstaff.and stayed in the bungalows. Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Scouts stayed during 1931 and 1935.Residents of the Kiewa Valley in Gundowring and Tawonga. The Kiewa Valley was a farming district being developed by clearing and farming the land with cattle.The Reid family were early settlers of the Kiewa Valley.. Ron White was born in 1920. He received a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at Footscray Technical School in 1946. He started work as a laboratory assistant and after several promotions was appointed Senior Operator in 1948. In 1949, he was Engineer, Grade 1 (Hydro Areas). After further promotions he became Assistant Area Engineer, Rubicon at new Eildon Power Station and Area Engineer, Kiewa in commissioning Mt Beauty Terminal Station and West Kiewa Power Station.. By 1956, he was the Area Operations Engineer at Kiewa and four years later the Kiewa Electrical Superintendent (Operations and Maintenance) . In 1961, he was officially recognised as deputy for the General Superintendent, Kiewa. In 1966 he was appointed General Superintendent Kiewa and Kiewa became 'a branch of the Transmission Department'. In 1974, the Rubicon / Eildon Area was also under Ron's control. His title was "Principal Hydro Engineer, Hydro Division, Transmission Operations Department. He held this position until his retirement in 1985.Ron White was an important identity in his role as Principal Hydro Engineer from 1966 to 1985 after the completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. His long period of service involved him in the construction, operation and maintenance of the SECV's Hydro Electric Schemes and administration of related catchment areas. He had a close association with the local communities and care for the welfare of employees. He lived in Mt Beauty and was well respected in the community and beyond. Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty for many years and wrote a book on the History of Mt Beauty. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Alex was involved with many organisations in Mt Beauty and interested in history. He took many photos of events and new developments in town. He also collected individuals memoirs on life in the town.Mt Beauty's history is unique as it was built as a construction town in the late 1940s. The information in Alex's Collection records the town's development perhaps in more detail than in his book "The History of Mt Beauty". His folder includes his education, his work with the SECV (foreman working on Clover Dam), his war service, his community work (Mt Beauty & District Progress Association & Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre) and awards, work as Shire Councillor and Mayor, sporting (tennis & golf) interests.
