The lithograph was included as an insert in the Farmers Journal and Gardeners Chronicle 21 June, 1862. The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks. The garden in the photograph is a section of the newly designed and planted Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden situated in the grounds of the former Bulla Roads Board property. During construction, commentators described the house as being in the ‘Elizabethan style’. The architectural style of the exterior, with its innovatory use of red brick and Italian tiles was more influenced by American models. The post card is of 'The Lodge' and the gateway to the Rupertswood Estate, which was owned by the Clarke family. 'The Lodge' was the former gatekeeper's cottage. When William Clarke had the mansion built he styled it on similar homes that the upper-classes in Britain owned. It was customary to include a Lodge at the main gate and a private railway siding along landscaped gardens. The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens in Sunshine, Victoria, are Australia’s oldest surviving industrial gardens, established in 1909 by Hugh Victor McKay for his workers and the local community. They remain a heritage-listed public space today. Established in1909 by H.V. McKay, founder of the Sunshine Harvester Works. Design by the landscape gardener Mr. Horshall prepared the plans; Mr. S.G. Thompson was appointed curator for 18 years.
