It is likely to be one of the textbooks used in educating seafarers, both naval and merchant. It is the twenty-fifth edition, showing that it was in great demand in the early to mid-19th century. Sea merchants could have used this as a reference for working out freight costs for their cargo. Customs Officers could have referred to it as well to calculate fees and taxes. The book’s owner had inscribed in pen and ink "Rose Anna, Schooner, Melbourne, March 25th 1857". At that time, the registered owners were Thomas Lamb & E. Keays, who were freighting cargo between Melbourne and Geelong. Schooner, ROSE ANNA: - The schooner Rose Anna was built in 1844 at Fremantle, W.A., by H. Edwards for Capt. William Heard. The 2-masted wooden vessel was carvel-built. Captain Heard registered Rose Anna at Fremantle in 1845 and in the same year, registered it at Port Adelaide. in 1852, Rose Anna was crushed and sunk at Port Adelaide by the Selma and raised. In 1852, the schooner was lengthened by William Hardy. In 1853, William Burton and W. Roberts registered Rose Anna at Melbourne. In 1855, W. Roberts registered, followed by John Balston & Thomas Ross. In 1856, it was registered by Thomas Lamb & E. Keays, in 1857 by William Howes & Charles Holland, in 1865 by Charles Holland & John Balfour, and in 1866 registered in Melbourne by mariners John Balfour & David Griffiths. In the 1940s, Rose Anna traded between Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Circular Head, Port Fairy, and Port Albert. In the 1950s and 1960s, it traded between Geelong Heads and Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, in lime, wool, general cargo and ballast. In 1857, when Rose Anna’s registered owners were Thomas Lamb & E. Keays, an advertisement was placed in The Age on March 9th, announcing that the Rose Anna was taking freight from Melbourne to Geelong. Later in the year, in October, the registered owners were William Howes & Charles Holland. They were still trading with Geelong, as on October 7th, The Age announced that Rose Anna arrived in Geelong from Melbourne on October 5th. On October 6th, 1866, Rose Anna went ashore while loading wheat at Sandridge, Port Phillip Bay, in severe gales and heavy seas and became a total wreck. The book is significant for its association with reference information to instruct sea merchant traders and naval officers. The publication is in its twenty-fifth edition, indicating the importance of such an instructional book. The book of tables and calculations shows the evolution of such reference texts, going from handwritten notes, to printed tables like these, and forward to slide rules, calculators, and to modern time computers. it demonstrates the importance of accuracy in calculating weights and measures at sea and for the purposes of fess, charges and taxes. The book is important to the history of the schooner Rose Anna, which is listed as a significant vessel on the Victorian Heritage Register, S582, as it has an inscription with the ship's name, date, and destination. Book, tall and narrow, with index tabs on the side edges of the pages. ... listed on the Contents page, as well as the printer's details. Within the book are several colourful sketches. Inscriptions include the name of the book's previous owner, Alma McCullagh. The Rose ...Alma McCullagh was a student at the Presbyterian Sabbath School located in Dennington, near Warrnambool. In January, around 1928, she received a book as an award from R. Conn, her Sabbath School teacher, in recognition of her involvement and achievements at the school. The exact year of this award is based on available records: in January 1928, Alma was presented with a prize by R. Conn, whereas by 1930, the role of awarding prizes had passed to F. Jones. Alma was probably the granddaughter of James McCullagh (1831–1911) and Elizabeth Eccles (1831–1909), who were pioneering settlers in the region. James and Elizabeth married in 1856 and established their home at Oak Grove, Yangery, Illowa from 1859, residing there until their deaths. One of their sons, William McCullagh (1873–1940), married Margaret Jane Russell (1879–1981). William and Margaret continued the family tradition, making their home at Oak Grove as well. They raised eleven children, with Alma likely being among the youngest of their children. The book, “The Rose Book for Girls”, edited by Mrs Herbert Strang, represents an example of literature accessible to older girls during the early 20th century. It was specifically selected as an end-of-year award, recognising consistent attendance at Sabbath School. Such choices highlight the role of books in supporting the educational and moral development of young women during this period. The book is important as a connection to the early township of Dennington, a community distinguished by its established school and church. This association reflects the values the community placed on education and religious instruction. The book’s significance is further enhanced by its relationship with colonial pioneer families in Australia, particularly those from Victoria and the Warrnambool district in southwest Victoria. It is a tangible link to the history and legacy of these early settlers, who were instrumental in shaping the regional development. In addition, the book is notable for its connection to the McCullagh family, a prominent farming family whose contributions supported the social and economic growth of the local district. This historical association enriches its value, situating the book within the broader narrative of community progress and pioneer achievement in the area, and highlighting its place within a tradition of religious life and community building. The Rose Book for Girls A collection of short stories by various authors Edited by Mrs Herbert Strang Publisher: Henry Frowde, Hodder & Stoughton, London Printer: Morrison & Gibb Ltd., Tanfield, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Date: 1916 Hardcover book. The volume captures his meteoric rise from a brilliant young defense attorney to Rome's leading forensic advocate, culminating in his famous take down of a corrupt governor. The core contents in this volume contains several pivotal legal cases, which can be divided into his early legal defenses and his massive prosecution of Verres. Included is Cicero’s very first surviving public speech (delivered in 81 BC). It is a civil partnership dispute regarding property and debt. Notably, Cicero had to argue against Rome's greatest orator of the time, Quintus Hortensius. Key themes in this volume is his fight against corruption and the exposure of provincial extortion and the greed of the Roman senatorial class. He exercised judicial integrity with his struggle to keep Rome's legal courts fair when faced with political bribery and intimidation. The Orations of Marcus Tullius Cicero Vol 1 Translated by C D Yonge Publisher: Henry G Bohn Date: 1856non-fictionVolume 1 of The Orations of Marcus Tullius Cicero is the beginning in the widely published 4-volume English translation by Charles Duke Yonge for Bohn's Classical Library series and focuses on Cicero's earliest legal masterpieces. Specifically, this volume includes The Philippics, a series of 14 fierce orations delivered by Cicero against Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) in 44–43 BC, following the assassination of Julius Caesar. Cicero was desperately trying to rally the Roman Senate to defend the failing Republic against Antony’s rise to dictatorial power. Volume 3 of this 1852 edition pivots away from the sweeping state conspiracies found in other volumes and focuses intensely on Cicero's personal political survival and highly dramatic legal defense trials. To understand its contents, you have to look at Cicero's life right before these speeches were given. In 58 BC, Cicero’s bitter enemy, Clodius, passed a law that forced Cicero into exile and destroyed his homes. A year later, Cicero was triumphantly recalled to Rome. Volume 3 is entirely made up of the legal battles and political speeches that followed his return as he fought to reclaim his property, protect his allies, and attack his enemies. Bohn edition is arguably the most famous and politically explosive volume in the entire four-part series. While Volume 3 handles his personal survival and Volume 4 addresses his final stand against Mark Antony, Volume 2 captures Cicero at the absolute absolute peak of his political power. This volume contains the speeches from his consulship (the highest office in Rome) in 63 BC, where he single handedly uncovered and dismantled a bloody coup designed to burn down the city of Rome. This volume allows the reader to see Cicero when he was the undisputed "Father of the Fatherland" (Pater Patriae), in this is the volume. It showcases him navigating political bribery, fighting for the cultural value of the arts, and ultimately crushing a domestic terrorist plot against the Roman state. The Orations of Marcus Tullius Cicero Vol 2 Author: C D Yonge Publisher: Henry G Bohn Date: 1852 Green cloth hard cover with Library label, title & Vol number on spine in gold letteringnon-fictionVolume 2 of the 1852 Henry G. Pleydell; Ian McDonald The 19th of March 1886 proved an important day in the lives of many early settlers in the Orbost area, because on this day the Orbost State School opened. The fact that the school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of HT Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second HT, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school now had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. This was reflected in the provision of a larger classroom in 1898. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. This photograph is associated with the history of education in Orbost.A black / white photograph mounted on grey card. It shows a group of school children posed in rows in front of an outside wall of a wooden building. A boy in the front row is holding a sign with "GRADE " written on it. The sign appears to be in white chalk on a blackboard. There is a handwritten list of names attached to the bottom of the photograph.education-orbost-state-school -
