A cable tram set in Lonsdale Street is waiting to cross east over Swanston Street bound for either Collingwood or North Carlton. The new track for the cable tram crossing Swanston St is being wood blocked over the "H" track crossing. The new electric track on the north side of Lonsdale Street is being connected up to the existing electric track at the cross over. Welding is also taking place on the new track work. The Britannia Hotel has occupied the north-west corner of the intersection since the 1860's with current premises completed in 1920. Further up Swanston Street at 289-299, is the four story Barnet Glass building completed in 1909. Mr. Barnet Glass sold his successful business to Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in 1905 and continued to trade at this location until 1939 as the Barnet Glass Rubber Company Limited manufacturing water-proof clothing. This short section of cable track between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street was the last cable track to be built in Melbourne. It was to provide a new terminus for south suburban cable trams when electric tramway was extended down Swanston Street from Queensberry Street to Lonsdale Street in 1924. While this track remained in use until 1939, Toorak bound trams ceased at the end of 1925 when the rest of Swanston Street was converted to electric trams. With the advent of television many suburban cinemas were no longer drawing the crowds. ...Stathy Raftopoulos was instrumental in bring Greek films to Melbourne and screened them in various picture theatres in the inner Melbourne suburbs where most post WW2 migrants were living. Prior to the opening of Greek cinemas various venues were used for screenings including Nicholas Hall in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.With the advent of television many suburban cinemas were no longer drawing the crowds. It was at this time that Stathi Raftopoulos with his partners in the Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures company purchased cinemas in the in suburbs of Melbourne where Greek immigrants were living - in 1960 the National Theatre in Richmond; 1961 the Sun Theatre Yarraville; 1965, the Paramount Theatre Oakleigh, Kinema Theatre Albert Park, and the Empire Theatre Brunswick and Westgarth Theatre Northcote. Here they screened Greek movies which entertained the Greek community supporting them to maintain their link with Greece and their culture and traditions. The dancers are wearing the traditional Ithacan costume. Pictured from L-R: Andrianna Bisas, Nicoletta ?, Emilia Calinikos, Eleni Tsalikis, Yianni Callinikos, unknown, Kristina Tsalikis. Olga who is of Ithacan descent, danced for a number of years in Athens for the Dora Stratou Dance Group which is renown for its traditional dance performances and costumes representing the various regions of Greece. Olga also taught Greek dance in Melbourne across the Greek and Australian community. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society has supported the teaching of traditional Greek dancing over the years and the Ithacan dance ensembles have performed at a variety of functions.
