The Ford XB panel van belonging to WO2 Ted Burgess rolled down the embankment during the night from the SGTs Mess carpark. Despite written off by the insurance company, the panel van was remarkably restored by Ted to roadworthy condition and driven in to Fortuna with a shark’s fin mounted on its roof. Traditionally the cutting of the cake was performed by the Unit commanding Officer and the youngest soldier. The name of the soldier assisting CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol is not known. This occasion was one of several events held in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The Corps Day Parade was held on a wet and miserable day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This occasion was one of several events held in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster printing press. The notes are believed to be written by Valerie Lovejoy as part of her research for the writing of her Master's Thesis and the book "Mapmakers of Fortuna" (Catalog item number 6000). ...The notes are believed to be written by Valerie Lovejoy as part of her research for the writing of her Master's Thesis and the book "Mapmakers of Fortuna" (Catalog item number 6000). ...These documents discuss the relocation of the School of Survey to firstly Canberra and then to Bendigo. It also discusses the possibility of extensive renovations at Fortuna and the construction of additional buildings for accommodation and messing facilities. It was envisaged that 15 x officers and 144 other ranks would comprise the AHQ Survey Regiment. On the reverse side of the first page of the handwritten notes is a hand drawn (not to scale) overall plan of the Fortuna site. The notes are believed to be written by Valerie Lovejoy as part of her research for the writing of her Master's Thesis and the book "Mapmakers of Fortuna" (Catalog item number 6000). The remaining photocopies are official letters to the Director General of the Department of Works about the Fortuna Master Plan dated 24 July 1961.Four Foolscap sized typed text photocopied pages, torn back to A4 Size and stapled top left hand corner. The one-hour visit was a rare opportunity for RA Svy to demonstrate to its Prime Minister the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It was also an opportunity to take him through historic Fortuna Villa. Introduced in 1975, the AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. The replacement AUTOMAP 2 system achieved operational status in August 1983. CPL Pat Drury in formal service dress served a silver service morning tea by the lake, as a result of a losing bet on the 1990 Rugby League Grand Final to MAJ Ray Redman, who appears in a Canberra Raiders rugby league top. Pat Drury Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed the Penrith Panthers, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Ray Redman reciprocated the following year, as the Penrith Panthers reversed the result against Canberra winning their first premiership. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post.
