Mary Egan was one of Ballarat's best-loved and respected educators. Commencing her teaching career as a student-teacher at Bacchus Marsh, she undertook teacher training at Melbourne Teachers' College (1941-1942). She taught in the Mildura district before returning to Ballarat in 1953, teaching infant grades at Humffray Street State School. Mary Egan joined the Ballarat Teachers' College (BTC) staff in 1958, starting a 23 year career specialising in language curriculum (ie children's literacy and literature). She was still on staff when all teachers colleges became State Colleges during the early 1970s. Along with other members of the State College Victoria, Ballarat (SCVB) staff, Mary's lecturing career continued when SCVB merged with the tertiary section of SMB at Mt Helen, later known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). The author of this book, Wendy Scarfe, is a writer who lives in Warrnambool. She graduated from Melbourne University and Melbourne Teachers’ College and has taught in England, India and Australia (including Warrnambool High School). David NEWBERRY (1925-2003) Born Eltham, Victoria David Newbury's painting career started with late 1950s abstraction. He worked for four decades, until 1997, when his final works were created on his last trip to Venice. Newberry was the son artist A.E. Newbury, and painting after World War 2 at RMIT, teaching there from 1955 - 1959,. He then taught at Bendigo Teachers College 1959 - 61 and Melbourne Teachers' College/Melbourne College of Advanced Education 1962 - 83. Among his students were Robert Jacks, Peter Smales and Gareth Sansom. ‘You must capture change. One day the landscape is violet, another it’s bluer or it has pinkness, its darker or lighter. Bruno LETI (1941- ) Born Rome, Italy Arrived Australia 1950 Bruno Leti was nine years old when he came from post World War Two Italy. Known as a painter, printmaker, photographer and publisher of artists’ books, he studied at RMIT, studying Printnaking under Tate Adams, and Melbourne Teachers' College. He has taught art in Italy, Canada, USA, and Melbourne, Australia. Bruno Leti lives and works in Melbourne. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.This etching by Bruno Leti was exhibited as part of "Parallel Prints", a limited edition print project which presents the same exhibition simultaneously in New Zealand, at Art at Wharepuke and at a gallery in another part of the world. Eleven Australian artists were invited to join New Zealand-based printmaker Mark Graver to contribute to a portfolio that will be shown simultaneously at Art at Wharepuke, New Zealand and the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Victoria. Using the uniqueness of the reproducible print allows for the same works to be viewed at the same time on opposite sides of the world. This highlights the democratic nature of printmaking and questions the aura of the unique. Which venue is showing the 'real' work? Which the reproduction? The Australian artists showing alongside Mark Graver are James Pasakos, Bruno Leti, Martin King, David Frazer, John Neeson, Antonietta Covino-Beehre, Deborah Klein, Deborah Williams, Melissa Smith, Jodi Heffernan and Susanna Castleden. The original concept, Parallel Prints NZ-UK in 2013, included invited artists from the UK and New Zealand. It featured the work of twelve diverse artists presented in a portfolio set. Ballarat Teachers’ College commenced at Dana Street State School (No. 33). Sixty one students enrolled, and the staff consisted of Mr W.H. Ellwood, Miss A. Bouchier, Mr A.B. Jones. (The Flag, Nov 1997; The Flag, Nov 1996; BTC Handbook 1965) Ballarat Teachers’ College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, where it remained until its temporary closure in December 1931 during the Great Depression. Miss P.A. Hamono joined the staff. During 1927 the college numbers were augmented by 26 Manual Arts students, who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued until 1930 when, on grounds of economy of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers’ College. Vic WOOD (1939 - 02 October 2020) Born Melbourne, Victoria Vic Wood was an internationally renowned artist, craftsman and teacher from the 1970s. He studied gold and silversmithing, woodturning and cabinet making at Melbourne Teachers' College and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a skilled woodturner who, as a lecturer at Melbourne College of Advanced Education, taught a generation of woodworkers. Best known as a master wood-turner, Vic Wood retired from lecturing in 1983 to become a full-time woodturner. He was a sought after demonstrator and presenter for all kinds of local and international events. His teaching philosophy was simple: ‘share everything, have nothing to hide, and have no secrets; for ultimately it is in giving that you receive’. Vic Wood was a foundation member and inaugural president of the Victorian Woodworkers Association (VWA). In 1923 the Victorian Woodworkers Association announced the establishment of an annual Vic Wood Scholarship. he intent of the award is to promote excellence in woodwork and to engender inclusive and supportive woodworking networks. This book is a novel written by Wendy Scarfe. Born in 1933 Wendy Scarfe was educated at Melbourne University and Melbourne Secondary Teachers’ College. She also illustrated several books and had exhibitions in many galleries including in Albury. Its original staff consisted of the Principal, Mr W.H. Ellwood, M.A., M.Ed. (Chairman of the Teachers’ Tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, BA., (lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. In 1927 the college moved to the old Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by 26 Manual Arts students, who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Art students continued till 1930 when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers’ College. During the four succeeding years, approximately 60 students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the College in its brief span of life (1926-1931). Five per cent of each year’s students were granted an extension of their studentship to enable them to proceed to Melbourne Teachers’ College, and to take the first year’s course for a University degree. With the advent of the economic depression of the ‘thirties, Ballarat Teachers' College closed its doors in December, 1931. Fourteen years were to pass before the College opened again on February 2nd, 1946. The college re-commenced at SS Dana Street, under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip. Ed., (acting, later Principal 1946-1950) and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., B. Com., Dip. Ed., Miss Monica H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip. Phys. Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister of Education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only but, at the last moment, men resident in Ballarat were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and it has continued as such. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teacher’s Certificate at the final College Assembly each year. In December 1955, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own Graduation Hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. (Mavis) Canty of the staff. Lord remained as principal until 1951 when he transferred to establish a teachers' college at Toorak. Tom William Turner was Lord's successor. A highlight of his term was the construction of new college buildings at Gillies Street with the students commencing their lessons there in February 1958. Turner retired in 1970, having overseen a period of substantial growth in the institution. In that year alone more than one hundred and forty students completed their primary teaching qualification to meet a severe shortage of teachers. Doug Watson commenced as principal in 1971. In 1973 Ballarat Teachers' College became the State College of Victoria at Ballarat. Three years later Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed and the teacher education students moved to the Mount Helen Campus. In 1990 Ballarat College of Advanced Education became Ballarat University College, an affiliated college with the University of Melbourne.
