Reverse enameled in black. Sign reads "Passengers must not travel in this compartment". The writing appears to have been stenciled over the white enamel base. The enameling has broken away from areas near the two screw holes formed to attach the sign to the compartment. An attempt has been made to address damage with paint. Yields information ...The remaining trailers 2 and 3 (after Nos 1 and 4 had been motorised) and a line of Duncan & Fraser tramcars in the depot. The broken paving and heaps of sand suggest that the tram shed is being extended to add roads 3 and 4 to the west. That would date the photo as 1914. Regattas were held on the Barwon River at the terminus of the South tramline which was linked directly to the other suburban destinations, Newtown and West Geelong. The standard fare was 3d cash or, for some shorter "sectional" journeys, pre-paid 2d tickets. The sign advertising an event on the river indicates that no matter where passengers alighted, the concession fare was 2d, to be paid in cash rather than by ticket whose detailed sections were irrelevant.Yields information about Geelong 2 and trailer 3 and demonstrates advertising for the Barwon River Regatta.Black and white print on paper. Yields information about an event and its location, but the date of the event is unknown at this time.Sign - painted onto a SEC (very similar to a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Ballarat tram car with the words "Bell St Only" on the front and a paper advert on the rear for the Homes and Industries Fair, at the Drill Hall in Curtis St. Has another former painted advertising sign underneath. Date of use not known at the time of acquisition. To be researched. Bell St was a destination on the Ballarat Destination roll, so it may have been used on trams which were not fitted with full destination rolls and then recycled by the SEC for advertising means. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides, made from about 1.5mm sheet steel. One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process.
