Headstone inscription: "In Affectionate Remembrance / EBENEZER JAMES / late Chaplain to the Naval Forces of Victoria / and / The Victorian Seamen's Mission/ This stone is erected / by Friends of all nationalities and creeds as a mark of esteem for his unselfish and consistent Christian efforts for the social and moral advancement of our sailors/ and / in recognition of.... his indefatigable and praiseworthy exertions the stamping out in Victoria of the cruel degrading maritime curse of crimping was mainly due. / Born 11th of March 1841 Died 14th of July 1901/ "A good deed is never lost. He who sows / courtesy reaps friendship and he who plants kindness gathers love." Basil. The Headstone was found at the Melbourne Cemetery, Carlton in 2016. Rev James worked at Port Melbourne and Williamstown Missions but was also a regular visit to Geelong and other coastal ports and beside encouraging fortnightly entertainments and Chapel services, actively shipvisiting to meet with Seamen.This image documents in full the inscription on this commissioned marble headstone marking the grave of a significant figure, the second Chaplain at Port Melbourne, and an important figure in the development and story of not only the Mission to Seafarers in Victoria but also in the life of the Naval Force of Victoria prior to Federation. Rev James was not only an influential figure in the stamping out of crimping, the exploitation of seamen, but also actively worked with government and community to improve the quality of life by active lobbying for the controlled licensing of hotels and liquor sources to limit the incidence of drunkeness rife in the Ports and Wharves of Victoria in the late 19th Century. This album contains a number of local coastal and seascapes including Thunder Point, views of local streets such as Liebig and Fairy streets, panorama views of the town from Manse Hill and Booval Hill and the Botanic Gardens. Buildings included are Cramond and Dickson, St Joseph’s Church, the saleyards. The book itself would have been used by patrons of the Western Hotel when J Fox was licensee, from 1880 until 1887. The hotel had been operating since 1870 when William O’Brien applied for a publican’s license for the house on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets with five sitting rooms and eight bedrooms. The stone building was designed by Andrew Kerr and built by Williams & Co. The Western Hotel was also the booking office for Cobb and Co Coaches which operated until the railway came to town in 1890. This album has historical significance on different levels. Firstly the photographs provide a view of Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The photos are aesthetically and artistically significant. Many of the buildings in the streetscapes are still recognizable. Secondly the Western Hotel has occupied a prominent site within the CBD for nearly 150 years. The High Plains Cattlemen's licenses expired in Aug. 2005 ending a 170 year history of alpine grazing in Victoria and Australia. This journal, No. 29, is published by the Mountain Cattlemen's Association "caring since 1835" and has articles and histories of the families and their activities. The photos is dated between 1871 and 1882. Initially known as the Kangaroo Hotel. On February 7, 1866, Edmund Pickett, publican, residing at Kangaroo Ground, applied at the Court of Petty Sessions held at Eltham for a Publican’s License for a house situated at the Kangaroo Ground, containing six bedrooms and two sitting rooms, rented and occupied by himself and licensed under the sign of the 'Kangaroo Hotel.' At the Court of Petty Sessions held at Eltham on 5 December 1871, William McLaughlin applied for a license for the Kangaroo Hotel, Kangaroo Ground. He had previously obtained a wine license, March 28. The Kangaroo Hotel predated Sep. 1865 In June 1882, William McLaughlin of Madeline Street, Carlton, (late of Kangaroo Ground, hotelkeeper) was found insolvent due to losses in connection with the Kangaroo Ground Hotel. The license for the hotel was later transferred from Mr John Donaldson to Mrs Sophia Greenaway. It appears during McLaughlin’s tenure the hotel became known as the Kangaroo Ground Hotel. Coach with flaps takes aboard passengers. It travelled between Kinglake and Hurstbridge. The vehicle has advertising on the side indicating: W. BODY. HURSTBRIDGE bread and pastry. The Advertiser on 15 Sep 1922 has a display advertisement on page 2 indicating that Hurstbridge bakery 'W. Body wishes to notify the Public of Hurstbridge and surrounding district that he has purchased Mr Oliver's business'. The Advertiser, Friday 10 November 1922, page 2: Mr J. D. Chalmers, who runs the motor service from Hurstbridge to Kinglake, has just had a large, body built on a two-ton motor, which will be serviceable for either 25 passengers or general goods. The work was entrusted to Mr. D.G. Graham, motor and coach builder, Hurstbridge, who completed it within a month, the finish, painting, etc.. being quite up to the standard of a city shop. The mail coach operated the route between Kinglake and Hurstbridge motor route, on which Mr. Sharpe had pioneered and run a motor mail route with a bus which carried 20 passengers, for many years but Sharpe's license for his motor bus was refused by the Country Roads Board mid 1930 as his bus was considered too large . In February 1935, Mr Sharpe was granted a license to carry passengers between Hurstbridge and Kinglake and Mr Kell between Kinglake and Hurstbridge. Davey's Hotel at Miners Rest was built sometime around 1850, and Mary Tait was the original Licensee.The gentleman on the white horse is Harry Telford, who was with Phar Lap in America when the horse died.Names of the other men are not known. The photo is dated "circa 1916 -17" and originally came from a lady in New Zealand.The Hotel was de-licensed in 1940. The tent model mentioned in the letters was displayed in the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. During the 1960s it was transferred to the Ballarat Historical Society. It is there for the past few days and he may wish it to remain a week or two longer, I know of no other exhibition of it to delay it being packed and shipped to my relatives in Geelong (Mr [?] Bright of Hitchock's Firm) who may wish to show it in one of their windows before forwarding it to your museum - I have had an itemised pane glass case made for it with drop down end and [?} it stands on a plateau of moss, to represent grass 32 x 13 x 13 high and chimney 14 1/2 - the case is made 34 x 26 x 20 high inside - I shall have it very carefully packed - tent emptied tools, beds, &c &c in separate packing and insured for 50 pounds - I will send you full details later on. I hope and believe your President will accept it in due time Meantime believe me to be very truly Cat Walter Hitchcock G.F.B. 48 The Memorial Hall Farringdon St London March 15th 1911 The Secretary Ballarat School of Mines Dear Sir, Thanks for your letter received last week – I have unaccountably mislaid it, so cannot address you personally, shall no doubt find it among office papers. The model is being fetched today from Victorian Agent General’s (Sir John [Lavernor?] office window in the Strand where many thousands, he tells me, have stopped in passing to see it (their first peep of Ballaarat). It will be on view at Blackheath (Kent) for a week, then packed and shipped without further delay. I shall enclose in the glass case (which is 26 x 34 x 16 in high) some spare minced moss and gas (smoke) in case in transit the plateau suffers by shaking (though it is well glued down). All the tools, mining appliances, cradle, windlass, &c will be separately packed enclosed – which you can easily place in respective positions. HRH Prince of Wales has graciously accepted a photo of it – and in my letter to him when sending it for his acceptance I said – as he would probably ere long visit Australia as did his grandfather and father, which ought to (and certainly will) include at least a day or two in seeing your beautiful City, and also something of your mines &c instead of the hurried visit of his father (2 hours) when he, as Duke of York, unveiled a statue to the memory of those slain in the sad Boer War, which now is admitted by almost everybody to have been a big political mistake, - though in the future with England’s present wise policy towards that country it will prove for Africa’s welfare. It may interest you to know that when I ascertained that Geelong was not to be visited by the Royal Pair – I went up to St James’s Palace by appointed time the Duke’s private Secy Sir Arthur Bigge – taking with me a specially illustrated paper issued in Melb. showing many pictures of the beauties and industries of Geelong – Sir Arthur was impressed but said all the arrangements for the Royal stay in Victoria (10 days) were made locally, by Lord Hopetoun and collegues and committee, and were practically closed – which meant that only a brief trip to Ballarat to uncover the memorial was intended outside Melbourne. Perhaps if we were Melbourne residents we should have succumbed to the prevailing spirit of selfishness – forgetting (or trying to forget) that there are many beauty spots in Victoria and centres of great interest - Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, &c that ought to have been visited instead of Melbourne only. Finding Sir Arthur favorably impressed about Geelong I thanked him and returned to City work again. I at once called to Geelong whose mayor and friends had been twice unsuccessful in trying for the Melbourne functions programme being altered to include a visit to Geelong and lovely spots in the Western District, reporting my interview with Sir A B and his favourable reception of my representations, but that any alteration to the programme of engagements during the Royal visit must be made locally and by the local authorities. This had the desired success for on receipt of my message the Geelong mayor and colleagues again reopened the question and went to Melbourne, resulting in a concession (but what an altogether inadequate one) and they graciously ? consented to the train, on its way with the Duke and Duchess to your city, to stop at the Geelong stn (15 minutes) and so it came about that by a hasty local effort, 3,000 school children, and not a few of the leading people including the Mayor &c were gathered to welcome them in Geelong. The National anthem being sung, an Address read and presented and kindly replied to. Now Ballarat should doubtless has influence. See to it when our P. Of Wales visits Victoria – an unselfish ¬ programme is fixed up – and HRH afforded ample opportunity of visiting leisurely your city, Geelong, Bendigo and other centres of beauty and importance. The Prince himself will be the gainer by such an equitable and enlightened programme, - and come back with all the more favourable views of the marvellous development ever since our family first settled in Geelong in 1850. A far preferable result of such a visit than night after night having Melbourne Banquets and the visiting of its undoubted attractions - whilst all the rest of the State remained unvisited. Such an official mistake must not be made again. I will write you again, stating name of steamer of which the model is shipped and date of departure – it is firmly built on a backing of 3/8 in oak tall uprights so through the 7/8 in plateau and am entrusting the packing be very careful. I expressed firm – so that except possibly any breakage in glass case – it should reach you in due time all right. Hitchcock regarding the death of James Oddie and early gold mining at Ballarat, 1911 48 The Memorial Hall Farringdon St London April 20th 1911 My Dear Sir, It is with no ordinary feeling of regret that I received the tidings of the death of my good friend, your fellow citizen for many years, Mr James Oddie. Living at Geelong from March 1850 I came to know him there as carrying on a foundry business in Ashby. With the discovery of gold at Ballarat started off almost of the working people, as well as of all other classes of the male population. Mr Oddie arrived in Ballarat I believe on or about September 1st 1851. My three comrades and I arrived October 1st 1851 – among the many thousands soon gathered within a mile or so of Golden Point – my friend Oddie and I often met. I returning to Geelong after a year mining – my friend on the other hand remaining at Ballarat ever since – a marvellous record, and I am sure his life has been one of unique value to your City in many ways, - his age (87) naturally prepared me for his call home – and only two mails before the news came I received from him on of his kindly chatty letters in which amongst other things – he referred with pleasure to having received from me two 10 x 12 photos – one being of my model and that he was arranging to have it placed in a shop window in your city. I am interested in the fact of your having known each of my three comrades of 1851/52. It was J.M. Garrett and I who got permission to conduct public Sunday morning service in their large Marquee – used all the week for issue of Licenses in the absence of any church buildings, and it being on wet Sundays impossible to have services as usual under the trees – Ballarat then was more like a Gentleman’s Park – than bush country – but the axe soon did its work – and all were felled for our cooking, and hencewith to make our kindling etc. Shafting of holes not being at first done because too shallow – our deepest (at Eureka) was only 115 ft. Bendigo I hear had now mines of 4,000 ft in depth (deeper than our tin or coal mines here). I fortunately have, in excellent state of preservation, my last of 12 licenses dated October 1 1852 and have recently purchased here a Miner’s Right dated 1864, to that when explaining on matters re Gold Licensing I can show sample of each. Victorian Minister for Mines Angus McKay introduced a Bill, which forbade the employment of children in the mines, introduced the eight hour day, called for the licensing of engine drivers and instructed mine owners to install safety devices on mine cages. This building dated back to the 1880s and had previously operated as Delany's Hotel and then the Royal Hotel. It was built near the site of the original Delany's Hotel, built in 1856. The Royal Hotel closed in 1921 after the area voted to be a 'dry area' in the local option poll. Tower House Day and Boarding School operated from 1921 until 1932. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s; many were associated with events and activities of the Church of England.Black and white photo of a partially demolished building. The roof and part of the second storey are missing. What remains indicates that it has been a large building in the Victorian style. Along one side at ground level there are 4 arches, perhaps entry to a covered veranda, above which is a colonnade, and perhaps an open veranda on the upper level. There is a mixture of treatments to the surrounds of the windows. On the corner, within an arch which may have once been a doorway, is a sign reading: "TOWER HOUSE / DAY / & / BOARDING SCHOOL". William and Emma Osmond with two small children arrived in Belfast in 1852 as assisted migrants assigned to R. H. Woodward . Two years later William was rated for a two room stone house in William street. By 1868 William Osmond was in business as a Butcher and was the holder of a Beer and Colonial wine license for his home which now numbered eight rooms. The license having been granted he opened the Volunteer Arms there, which he operated for two years whilst he had built, the two storied stone building next door, to take advantage of the fact that a livestock sale yards was operating on the opposite side of William street, hence the name Market Inn. William died in 1876 and his sons continued to run the hotel until 1916, when the building was sold and the license transferred to Harold Revell, a retired farmer. The license was revoked in 1918. and the building became a private dwelling . The building is still standing although the market for which it was named is long gone. The Border United Co-operative Breweries Limited was formed in 1911 by the amalgamation of The Albury Brewing and Malting Company Limited and The Anglo-Australian Brewery Company Proprietary Limited which operated breweries in Beechworth, Tallangatta and Yarrawonga. The Anglo-Australian Brewery was owned by the Billson family. By August the new plant was operating near the Union Bridge on the border of Victoria and NSW as shown in this photo. However the enterprise failed in August 1914 when not enough co-operative shares could be sold and also due to declining water quality. In December 1914 its spirit merchant’s license was transferred to the newly established Murray River Proprietary Company. In 1922, the brewery and 32 acres of land was sold to Mr E E Waite. Harry Stead, Snr., owned and operated Wodonga’s first taxi service. He had horse drawn cabs running between Wodonga, and Albury in 1868. He also ran a carrying business with wagons and drays. Workmen from Albury and Wodonga were carried to the construction site of the Hume Weir. Drays, although slow, were used with room for 10 or 12 paying passengers, at times. Stead’s paddocks ran back from Sydney Street (now High Street) with stable accommodation for his 70 and more horses. The Provincial Motel occupied part of the site in later years. Harry’s son, “young Harry” joined his Dad around 1892 as soon as his schooldays were over. After the horse drawn cabs, the Steads began a motorised taxi, hire car and bus services. Some of the taxis used were an A-Model Ford, 1934 Ford, Ford V8, Dodge Tourer, Hudson Six and, earlier, the 1923 Buick with dicky seat. Among the drivers were Stan Hogbin, Gerry Gerrard, Jack O’Neill, “Peggy” O’Neill, Ernie “Honey” Zeinert, Cliff Williams and Les Cole. Young Harry had four cars on the rank from 1930 to 1940 when competition for fares was fierce. He had his regulars who paid 4/- a week to go to and from Albury daily. In 1934, Harry was before the Albury Police Court, charged with having driven his taxi on a public road without a taxi licence. The Albury Municipal Council required all taxi drivers to have a NSW certificate of registration before collecting fares in NSW. The Harvest Home Hotel was licensed as a beer shop in 1866. Patrick Vallence was the licensee. On his death in 1874 his widow Mrs M. A. Vallence obtained the license. At the time this image was taken George Marshall was leasing the hotel. Following a decrease in the population of Bacchus Marsh, by 1911 the hotel had lost its licence.The Vallence family still owned the building after the loss of the hotel licence in 1911and it was used for some years after this as a private residence by some members of the Vallence family. The image depicts the Harvest Home Hotel situated in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The name of the hotel can be seen above the verandah roof. The building appears to be of stone with decorative stonework corners. A verandah is inset to the left of a gabled front section which has its own door and window. On either side of the door beneath the verandah can be seen boot or shoe scrapers. A deep gutter runs along the front of the hotel, with a slab acting as a bridge to the road. Situated in the gutter at the front of the hotel is a water trough which has an arch above it with an ornate lantern, probably to light the front entry and to enable horses to be watered at night.
