In 2016 the Welcome to Eltham community project started to welcome Syrian refugees into the community and made Welcome Butterflies to say welcome to them. This book has been given to John Ardlie by Lewis Gilles in 1866. John Martin Ardlie came to Warrnambool in 1852 as the Clerk of Courts and remained in this position until 1868. He died in 1872. He was a leading figure in community affairs for twenty years and Ardlie Street in Warrnambool is named after him. His family home was Wyton, site of the old convent at Emmanuel College today. Lewis Gilles, important in the early history of Tasmania as a bank owner and breeder of cattle, came to Warrnambool in 1854 as the first resident Police Magistrate. He remained until 1866 when he went to England (the occasion of his presentation of this book to John Ardlie). He died in 1884 in South Australia. Gilles Street in Warrnambool is named after him.This book is of high significance because of its connection to two very important early residents of Warrnambool – John Ardlie and Lewis Gilles. This is a hard cover book of 336 pages. The cover is brown with gold ornamentation and lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged. The first letter of each hymn is ornamented and there is an illustration covered with tissue paper on the first page. One page shows silverfish damage and the cover is partly detached from the binding. The cover is frayed in places and a little stained. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘Presented to J. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. This is the untold story of Margaret (1904) and Jean (1906) Davies and their uncompromising faith, amazing courage and endless endurance. Margaret was called to Korea as an educator from 1910 to 1940. During the Mansei Uprising, Japanese police arrested her for inciting to riot and drove Kim Il-Sung into Manchuria where he founded Korean Communism. Jean gave up a promising career in surgery at the Women's Hospital in Melbourne to practise at a mission hospital in Chinju, Korea. Sent home as a foreign alien before the attack on Pearl Harbor she practised at outback mission stations in Australia, doubling as the Flying Doctor. She medically examined the population of the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) as a first step to rid the country of leprosy. Chiltern Pharmacy, now called Dow's Pharmacy, opened in 1859 at a time when the township of Chiltern was experiencing a second-wave gold rush that redistributed the balance of commercial and social activity in the region. David McEwan, father of Prime Minister John McEwan, was one of the first pharmacists practicing at the business. It was purchased in 1929 by pharmacist Hilda Dow who ran the business with her apprentice and husband, Roy Dow, until they closed the business in 1968. In 1988, after founding the North East branch of the National Trust, the Dows donated the premises with its entire fittings and stock. Some of the more than 4,000 items in stock at the time of closure in 1968 were present in the shop when the Dows took charge in 1929 and date to the late Nineteenth Century (around the time this image was taken). Hilda Dow (nee Grey) was born in 1897, the daughter of a police magistrate. She enrolled to study at the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1919 and worked initially for Poynton's Pharmacy in Morwell before purchasing the Chiltern Pharmacy that was later named after her. She was a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, a hospital committee and Board, the Red Cross and the Infant Welfare Association and held office for the Chiltern branch of the Country Women's Association. Her sister Helene Grey received an OBE for her work as Lady Superintendent of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Although Hilda Dow was not Australia's first female pharmacist (this was Caroline Copp in 1880) the preservation of the pharmacy and the stories it presents sheds light on the general issue of recognition for female medical pioneers in Australia. Lantern slides, sometimes called 'magic lantern' slides, are glass plates on which an image has been secured for the purpose of projection. Glass slides were etched or hand-painted for this purpose from the Eighteenth Century but the process became more popular and accessible to the public with the development of photographic-emulsion slides used with a 'Magic Lantern' device in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Photographic lantern slides comprise a double-negative emulsion layer (forming a positive image) between thin glass plates that are bound together. A number of processes existed to form and bind the emulsion layer to the base plate, including the albumen, wet plate collodion, gelatine dry plate and woodburytype techniques. Lantern slides and magic lantern technologies are seen as foundational precursors to the development of modern photography and film-making techniques.This image is significant as it provides insight into social and commercial infrastructure available in the North-East region of Victoria in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. The business pictured is also associated with a Prime Minister of Victoria and some of Victoria's first female medical and pharmaceutical practitioners. Three Photograph albums of the Otter Street building of Collingwood Technical College. One consists of photographs of the progressive building and the second consists of photographs of the Official Opening of the Otter Street Campus on Thursday September 17th 1981 at 2pm by His Excellency The Honourable Sir Henry Winneke, Governor of Victoria. Also an Invitation card to the event. Guests included Hon.AJ Hunt, Minister for Education. During the opening there was a bomb scare so the building was evacuated, hence the police presence. Building of the Police Barracks began in 1860. It included accommodation, mess room, kitchen and living room. Outhouses included lock-up, stables, toilets, storage and an officers house. It was decommissioned in 1939 and was later refurbished and used by the Bendigo Senior Secondary College.Newspaper article by Linda Barrrow date unknown. Edward Thomas Warren arrived in Victoria in 1852 and joined the police force in 1856. He served in Geelong 1856-1864 before coming to Bendigo, where he remained until his death in 1892. He had retired from the police force in 1886. He had been a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters for 25 years. This fraternity aimed to provide social and financial support to members during sickness, death, old age, unemployment and disability.A 44-page document detailing the history of the local Warren family. James Bryance CONDER (aka James Brycanne CONDER) Artist, poet and four-navy veteran, 1872 - 1954. In 1889 he served in the Merchant Marine Service sailing on the ships ‘Ellora’ and ‘Avenger’. in 1891, aged 19, he joined the Royal Navy in Australia serving on the flagship of the Australian Station, ‘HMS Orlando’, when it escorted ships of the new Australasian Auxiliary Squadron in coastal voyages. After serving 6 months he returned to family in Melbourne rather than sign on for 12 years. Instead he joined the Victorian Colonial Navy and was posted, in succession, to the ‘HMVS Cerberus’, ‘HMVS Nelson’ and the gunboat ‘HMVS Albert’. In 1896 he left the navy, married Victoria Agnes NIHILL and joined the Victorian Police Force. In 1904 CONDOR returned to the sea as part of the Commonwealth Naval Forces, an amalgamation of the colonial navies formed after federation and later becoming the Royal Australian Navy. On his first ship, ‘HMS Katoomba’, as bosun yeoman, he helped train new recruits. He later served on ‘HMS Challenger’ and ‘HMS Psyche’ which included voyages to Fiji, the New Hebrides, Singapore and New Zealand as well as regular cruises to Australian ports. In 1909, CONDER left the Navy and undertook shored-based civilian work until 1913 when he joined the Royal Australian Naval College at Osborne House in Geelong. He remained with the Naval College until 1937 through its moves to Jervis Bay, NSW and then to Crib Point, Victoria training midshipmen according to the practices of the Royal Navy. In later life, CONDER produced two handwritten journals for his family illustrated with his own paintings and drawings. Two original sets were made. One remains in the family while the other is held by the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.
