This stamp was made by C G Roeszear & Son Melbourne. This was passed to me by my mrother, Mary Elizabeth Millane Nee Markham. She told me that, for as long as she could remember - and from at least 1920 - this stamp had been used by her mother, Bertha Jane Markham (nee Cruse) when she was Post Mistress at Mitcham and that she, ( that is, my mother) had continued to use the stamp in her own shop (Cnr Station St and Whitehorse Rd) from 1944 to 1957. Article in Nunawading Gazette about the first Post Office in Forest Hill. The first postmistress was Catherine Peacock (and storekeeper) who died in the 1930's. Later the P.O. was transferred to the North West corner of Canterbury Road and Springvale Road. Mabel Hedditch (1897 - 1966) moved to Australia and was postmistress in Bridgewater. Aswell as being elected to the Portland Town Council she was a founding member of the Country Women's Association of Victoria. Juliana Magan was the seventh child of miner Patrick Magan and his wife Mary (née Flanagan). She was Postmistress at Linton from 1898 until at least 1912. Juliana Magan married Daniel Garvey at St Francis' Catholic Church in Melbourne in 1916. The Mitcham Post Office was erected in 1924 as a large double-storied brick residence with two shops facing Whitehorse Road. In the larger shop Bertha and Patrick Markham operated a mixed newsagency business and the local Post office. Bertha Markham was appointed Postmistress. "Alexander Colquhoun [Herald art critic 1914-1922 and feature writer for the Age 1926-1941] ... took private students in the first decade of the century, and one of these was Winifred Miles, who after her marriage in 1910 lived the remainder of her life in Ringwood. ... (She) began by doing charcoal studies of animals when she was in Balranald, but in later years moved to oils and then watercolours, travelling around Ringwood to find places to paint by means of a pony-driven governess-cart. Following the death of Bertha Markham, Postmistress, in 1944, the building was not a PO; it resumed that function in mid 1957: between 1944 and 1957, the post office location was on the same block several buildings to the east of the current site. This building was also the home of Mary Millane (daughter of Bertha Markham) who operated a mixed business here and her husband Harold conducted a studio photographic business from these premises. The Millane family sold the premises to the PMG and vacated the premises in June, 1957, at which time it resumed service as the Mitcham Post Office.mitcham post office

Dr George James Scantlebury practised as a doctor in Linton in the 1880s. He married Catherine Millington Baynes who was Postmistress at Linton. The family moved from Linton to Cheltenham in 1889. Vera Scantlebury was born in Linton in 1889 just before the family left for Cheltenham. The Scantlebury's other three children were all born in Cheltenham, George Clifford (Cliff) in 1890, Dorothy (Dot) in 1893, and Ethel Eileen (Eileen) in 1899. Vera Scantlebury (afterwards Scantlebury-Brown) also became a doctor. She was instrumental in the formation of the Infant Welfare Division of the Victorian Health Department, and was first Director of Infant Welfare.
