During the North-East Victorian bushfires of 1952, Helen Felton, Postmistress of Tintaldra post office, worked continuously for five days and nights to ensure the flow of communication through the disaster. Helen Felton conceded to leave her post for only 45 minutes while “the fire passed within fifteen feet of the spot where she was working,” burning down the garage and neighbouring store, before returning to work. Each entry is simply the surname, christian names and Ringwood District Birth Registration Number. Believed to have been entered by Marianne Thomson, Postmistress and local Registrar. This stamp was made by C G Roeszear & Son Melbourne. This was passed to me by my mrother, Mary Elizabeth Millane Nee Markham. She told me that, for as long as she could remember - and from at least 1920 - this stamp had been used by her mother, Bertha Jane Markham (nee Cruse) when she was Post Mistress at Mitcham and that she, ( that is, my mother) had continued to use the stamp in her own shop (Cnr Station St and Whitehorse Rd) from 1944 to 1957. Article in Nunawading Gazette about the first Post Office in Forest Hill. The first postmistress was Catherine Peacock (and storekeeper) who died in the 1930's. Later the P.O. was transferred to the North West corner of Canterbury Road and Springvale Road. The Country Women's Association of Victoria was founded in 1928. It was formed to promote the interests of women and children in rural areas. Mabel Hedditch (1897 - 1966) moved to Australia and was postmistress in Bridgewater. Aswell as being elected to the Portland Town Council she was a founding member of the Country Women's Association of Victoria. Juliana Magan was the seventh child of miner Patrick Magan and his wife Mary (née Flanagan). She was Postmistress at Linton from 1898 until at least 1912. The Mitcham Post Office was erected in 1924 as a large double-storied brick residence with two shops facing Whitehorse Road. In the larger shop Bertha and Patrick Markham operated a mixed newsagency business and the local Post office. Bertha Markham was appointed Postmistress. "Alexander Colquhoun [Herald art critic 1914-1922 and feature writer for the Age 1926-1941] ... took private students in the first decade of the century, and one of these was Winifred Miles, who after her marriage in 1910 lived the remainder of her life in Ringwood. ... (She) began by doing charcoal studies of animals when she was in Balranald, but in later years moved to oils and then watercolours, travelling around Ringwood to find places to paint by means of a pony-driven governess-cart. (See also NP262 ) Black and white photo of Mitcham Post Office, NE corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street. Has been site of Mitcham PO for many years - built in 1924. Following the death of Bertha Markham, Postmistress, in 1944, the building was not a PO; it resumed that function in mid 1957: between 1944 and 1957, the post office location was on the same block several buildings to the east of the current site. This building was also the home of Mary Millane (daughter of Bertha Markham) who operated a mixed business here and her husband Harold conducted a studio photographic business from these premises. The Millane family sold the premises to the PMG and vacated the premises in June, 1957, at which time it resumed service as the Mitcham Post Office.mitcham post office

Reproduced on p73 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Two horse drawn carriages outside Thomson's hotel in Kinglake. One is carrying passengers. On the left attached to the hotel is the Post Office. Mrs Thomson was the postmistress who in 1927 had held the position for 43 years (since 1884). The licence for the house was obtained in 1908 by Mr. Harry Thomson who by 1927 was the oldest permanent resident in Kinglake, having been there about 50 years. The hotel was destroyed by bushfire in February 1926 and a new hotel constructed on the site in 1927 by owner and licensee, Mr Frank Thomson, Harry’s son. Another identity at the hotel is Mr W. S. Eliza McGlone was the wife of John McGlone and they were early settlers in Mitcham. They ran one of the earliest hotels in Mitcham: 'The Harvest Home' from 1873. The hotel was conducted in the front room of their house in Whitehorse Road, Mitcham, on the corner of what is now McGlone Street. The hotel closed in 1889. John McGlone died on 3 September 1892 aged 65. Eliza McGlone continued to live in Mitcham until her death on 2 January 1921, aged 85. She had been Mitcham's first official Postmistress and, following several others who had held that position, she returned to that role for a period up to 1914 when Bertha Markham was appointed. The McGlones owned substantial rental properties and had donated one acre in central Mitcham for the Catholic Church. The town borrows its name from the Koroitch Gundidj people who occupied the area prior to European settlement. Around the 1850 the district had the highest population of Irish immigrants in rural Australia. The Koroit Post Office was designed by architect and engineer John Mason of Port Fairy.
