Eaglehawk is a hilly district, eight kilometres beyond central Bendigo, with many quartz lodes. The origin of its name is uncertain. It may have been named by a shepherd who killed an eaglehawk which attacked sheep, or by an early goldminer who observed an eaglehawk. Gold was discovered at Bendigo (Sandhurst) in October, 1851, and the gold-bearing land extended several kilometres north-west of Bendigo beyond Eaglehawk. One well-known goldfield was Eaglehawk Gully, dating from 1852. The community at Eaglehawk soon began to develop. On 29 July 1862 the Borough of Eaglehawk formed and in 1865 a Town Hall opened. By 1871 the population of Eaglehawk was 6,590. In 1887, when George Willan was Mayor, the Borough issued medals for Queen Victoria's jubilee (NU 20204-5 ), and in 1897, when E.C. Brown was Mayor, it again issued medals for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee (NU 20453). The same year moves began to build a new Town Hall, but it took until 1901 for funds to be raised and construction to be completed. Further growth occurred in both the community and social institutions, and by 1903 the the population was 8,130. By then Eaglehawk was connected to Bendigo by steam tramway, and boasted post and money order facilities, three banks and a telegraph office. It had 'numerous hotels', three state schools, two private schools, nine churches, a court of petty sessions, a police station, two mechanics institutes, several organised societies and a park 'hansomely laid out with flower beds and shrubs'. The 'model borough' had 1,862 houses, and streets lit partly with gas and partly with kerosene. By 1947 the decline in gold mining had caused the population to fall to 4,090. Bendigo became more dominant as an employment centre. However, Eaglehawk still had nine hotels and as well had acquired an electric tram and public baths. The population reached its turn-of-the-century level again in 1991. On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor and Metcalf to form the City of Greater Bendigo. By then the borough had become physically joined with suburban Bendigo. Much of Eaglehawk's historic built fabric has been retainedNational Trust Identification Data Forms and Photos for the Eaglehawk Court House and Mechanics Institutes, July 1977. William Charles Vahland (born Carl Wilhelm Vahland; 2 October 1828 – 21 July 1915) was a German born and trained Australian architect who, after migrating to Bendigo in 1854 and becoming an Australian citizen on 20 July 1857, became known as the "premier architect of the Victorian goldfields". Vahland designed over 200 buildings in North Central Victoria, including many of Bendigo's largest public and private buildings. By encouraging other European artisans and artists to emigrate to Bendigo, Vahland's aim was to realise a vision of the city as the "Vienna of the South". Vahland and his firm designed and directed the building of many of Bendigo′s finest buildings, including the Town Hall, the Shamrock Hotel, the Bendigo Hospital, the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the School of Mines, the Mechanics Institute, the Princess Theatre, the Bendigo Masonic Temple, the Cascades in Rosalind Park, the Alexandra Fountain, the Sandhurst Club, the Commercial, National and Colonial Banks, the grandstand at Canterbury Park, Eaglehawk, as well as churches, commercial buildings, and private homes. The firm also opened an office in Echuca, and erected buildings in Hay, Deniliquin, Lorne, Lancefield, Rochester, Rushworth, Swan Hill, Yarrawonga and Benalla.. Fifteen page copy of paper on William Charles Vahland delivered in the Lodge by WBro David Beagley, on Friday 27th July 2001. Letter attached to the paper, addressed to Trevor Parsons, Secretary, Bendigo Historical Society, from Peter E. Hamilton, stating that the paper on Vahland 'was produced in the "Lodge of Research 2001'.sandhurst, bendigo, william charles vahland

The Bendigo & Region Branch is the National Trust’s voice in the region. The Branch works with council and the community on local heritage issues. New members are always welcome at any of the Branch’s meetings and events. Designed by renown Bendigo architects Vahland and Getzschmann, Osborne House was originally built as a private school in 1869, extended in 1870 and sold in 1888 when it became a boarding house. The property enjoys a privileged position surrounded by more of Vahland's inspiring designs - the Forest Street Anglican, Methodist and Congregational churches while just over the hill, the massive spire of the Sacred Heart Cathedral dominates the skyline. Both the skyline and the residence have undergone much change over the last century and now enjoy a harmonious blend of traditional form and modern function. Beyond the secluded front entry, Osborne House offers grand Victorian proportions blended seamlessly with a timeless French influence. Paul Howard McGillivray (1834 - 1895) : In 1862, Paul Howard MacGillivray was appointed resident surgeon at Bendigo Hospital, succeeding Dr. Atkinson, a position he held until 1873.[ During this tenure, he managed patient care amid the rapid population growth and health challenges of the Victorian goldfields, where mining accidents, infectious diseases, and injuries were prevalent. His role involved overseeing surgical operations and general medical services for a burgeoning community, contributing to the hospital's development as a key institution in regional healthcare. MacGillivray's surgical expertise was particularly evident in his focus on hydatid cysts, a common affliction in colonial Australia due to environmental factors. He authored three papers on the subject between 1865 and 1872, published in medical journals, which detailed innovative management techniques including excision methods and post-operative outcomes. These works emphasized conservative approaches alongside surgical intervention, drawing from cases encountered at Bendigo Hospital, and helped advance local understanding of the disease's treatment. In 1873, following the end of his hospital appointment, MacGillivray transitioned to independent private practice in Bendigo, establishing a solo operation that catered to the mining community's medical needs. This shift allowed him greater flexibility in serving patients affected by occupational hazards and chronic conditions, building on his foundational experience in Williamstown. His practice quickly gained prominence for reliable surgical care in the region. Paul Howard McGillivray died in Bendigo on 9th. July, 1895, at his residence on the corner of Forest and Rowan Streets. https://grokipedia.com/page/paul_macgillivrayHand written certificate of appreciation presented to P. H. Bendigo has many fine buildings, and many historic buildings. Two architects have made outstanding contributions to Bendigo. The first is William Vahland whose work spanned more than fifty years. From 1857 until shortly after the first World War, he and his partners designed banks, churches, schools, theatres, hotels and private and business premises. From 1858 until his death in 1875, Robert Getzshmann was Vahland's partner. Later partnerships involved his son Henry and following Henry's death, John Beebe. William Beebe was born in Bendigo, trained as a stonemason under his father, and studied architectural drawing at the Bendigo School of Mines. Following his father's death in 1891, William Beebe devoted his time exclusively to his architectural practice. From 1854 to 1891 Bendigo was officially known as Sandhurst. Soft cover.
