Girton College began as a private school in 1884 and was named after the first female residential college at Cambridge. Just prior to WW1, ownership and control was handed to the Anglican Church. In 1992 the church announced it would be closing the college for financial reasons. A group of volunteers stepped in to establish Girton Grammar School.Softcover book. 1. Dorothy Dempsey was a student of Arthur Thomas Woodward (see No.2). She was considered a "promising artist" who exhibited in Bendigo and Melbourne in the late 1930's - early 1940's. The Bendigo Art Gallery has one of her paintings. 2. Arthur Thomas Woodward (1865, Birmingham, England- 12/2/1943 Bendigo) Studied and taught art in England, Paris and Antwerp before coming to Victoria in 1889. Whilst briefly the Art Director of the Sale School of Art, he married Emma Jane Stokes in 1892. He then became the Head of the Art Department at the Bendigo School of Mines, where he remained until his retirement in 1921. He was responsible for the art division of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition. and was heavily involved in the establishment of the Bendigo Art Gallery. Water scheme opened April 1964 with the trust being created by the Governor in Council. It consisted of 3 councillors from Axedale and 3 members appointed by the Minister of Water Supply.A grey exercise book containing newspaper cuttings relating to the progress of getting the water supply to Axedale. Also included are notice of meetings of the Axedale Waterworks Trust with financial statements for 1963 and 1964. A letter dated 2nd March 1964 addressed to Mr. J. Ellison from L.G. Houston (Private secretary to the Minister of water supply W.J Mibus) is also in the book. Paul Howard McGillivray (1834 - 1895) : In 1862, Paul Howard MacGillivray was appointed resident surgeon at Bendigo Hospital, succeeding Dr. Atkinson, a position he held until 1873.[ During this tenure, he managed patient care amid the rapid population growth and health challenges of the Victorian goldfields, where mining accidents, infectious diseases, and injuries were prevalent. His role involved overseeing surgical operations and general medical services for a burgeoning community, contributing to the hospital's development as a key institution in regional healthcare. MacGillivray's surgical expertise was particularly evident in his focus on hydatid cysts, a common affliction in colonial Australia due to environmental factors. He authored three papers on the subject between 1865 and 1872, published in medical journals, which detailed innovative management techniques including excision methods and post-operative outcomes. These works emphasized conservative approaches alongside surgical intervention, drawing from cases encountered at Bendigo Hospital, and helped advance local understanding of the disease's treatment. In 1873, following the end of his hospital appointment, MacGillivray transitioned to independent private practice in Bendigo, establishing a solo operation that catered to the mining community's medical needs. This shift allowed him greater flexibility in serving patients affected by occupational hazards and chronic conditions, building on his foundational experience in Williamstown. His practice quickly gained prominence for reliable surgical care in the region. Paul Howard McGillivray died in Bendigo on 9th. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". William Charles Vahland (born Carl Wilhelm Vahland; 2 October 1828 – 21 July 1915) was a German born and trained Australian architect who, after migrating to Bendigo in 1854 and becoming an Australian citizen on 20 July 1857, became known as the "premier architect of the Victorian goldfields". Vahland designed over 200 buildings in North Central Victoria, including many of Bendigo's largest public and private buildings. By encouraging other European artisans and artists to emigrate to Bendigo, Vahland's aim was to realise a vision of the city as the "Vienna of the South". Vahland and his firm designed and directed the building of many of Bendigo′s finest buildings, including the Town Hall, the Shamrock Hotel, the Bendigo Hospital, the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the School of Mines, the Mechanics Institute, the Princess Theatre, the Bendigo Masonic Temple, the Cascades in Rosalind Park, the Alexandra Fountain, the Sandhurst Club, the Commercial, National and Colonial Banks, the grandstand at Canterbury Park, Eaglehawk, as well as churches, commercial buildings, and private homes. The firm also opened an office in Echuca, and erected buildings in Hay, Deniliquin, Lorne, Lancefield, Rochester, Rushworth, Swan Hill, Yarrawonga and Benalla..
