Numerous motor and horse-drawn vehicles are in the street and a fire hydrant is in the foreground. This short section of cable track between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street was the last cable track to be built in Melbourne. It was to provide a new terminus for south suburban cable trams when electric tramway was extended down Swanston Street from Queensberry Street to Lonsdale Street in 1924. While this track remained in use until 1939, Toorak bound trams ceased at the end of 1925 when the rest of Swanston Street was converted to electric trams. The former cable tram curves into Lonsdale Street can be seen with cable track demolition works well underway. A "W "class tram is waiting to return to "Bakers Rd" (North Coburg). A cable tram set in Lonsdale Street is waiting to cross east over Swanston Street bound for either Collingwood or North Carlton. The new track for the cable tram crossing Swanston St is being wood blocked over the "H" track crossing. The new electric track on the north side of Lonsdale Street is being connected up to the existing electric track at the cross over. Welding is also taking place on the new track work. The Britannia Hotel has occupied the north-west corner of the intersection since the 1860's with current premises completed in 1920. Further up Swanston Street at 289-299, is the four story Barnet Glass building completed in 1909. Mr. Barnet Glass sold his successful business to Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in 1905 and continued to trade at this location until 1939 as the Barnet Glass Rubber Company Limited manufacturing water-proof clothing. The first photograph shows a bogie trailer being shunted at the bottom of Elizabeth Street. This photo is dated between 1933 and 1935 based on the construction of the building next door to Hosies Hotel in 1933 and the closure of the cable lines in 1935. The second photograph has a Collingwood bond cable tram waiting to cross the Swanston Street. The new Myer Emporiun Lonsdale store dominates the south side of Lonsdale Street completed in 1927. In the distance is the dome of Law Courts in William Street together with a West Melbourne bound cable tram at Queen Street. Note the Traffic Lights on the right and on the opposite corner, Myerson Tailored Suits is on the corner of "Coreglia House" completed in 1926. This photo dates between 1929 and 1933. Photo of the stationary bus at a temporary terminus outside the State Library in Swanston Street, bound for Elsternwick. Buses replaced trams on this route between late 1925 and early 1926 during the conversion of the cable line to electric traction. Note the centre tramway overhead pole behind the bus that was installed in 1924 to permit Coburg and Preston trams to reach Lonsdale Street. A number of crew are featured in the photo. Wire mesh is being laid on the road base with some wooden sleepers and rails in place. A large steam powered roller is partially shown at left carrying the name of a popular construction company, The Foundation Coy. Ltd., that was contracted for many of the cable-to-electric tram conversions in the 1920s. Note that the rails being positioned are railway rails that required a check plate to be bolted to each rail to create a flangeway in the road surface. These plates can be seen stacked at the right of the track bed with pre-drilled holes. Work commenced on the conversion of the cable tram track in Swanston Street in December 1925 and proceed in a northerly direction towards Lonsdale Street. A passenger safety zone with flashing lights is in clear view along with Christmas decorations hanging from the span wires. During the 1960s, L class trams were brought back into revenue service because of a shortage of rollingstock. Because the W class tram in the distance does not appear to be fitted with side lights, this suggests the photograph is from the 1960s. Yields information about shortage of rollingstock and L class trams in 1960s.
