These documents discuss the relocation of the School of Survey to firstly Canberra and then to Bendigo. It also discusses the possibility of extensive renovations at Fortuna and the construction of additional buildings for accommodation and messing facilities. It was envisaged that 15 x officers and 144 other ranks would comprise the AHQ Survey Regiment. On the reverse side of the first page of the handwritten notes is a hand drawn (not to scale) overall plan of the Fortuna site. The notes are believed to be written by Valerie Lovejoy as part of her research for the writing of her Master's Thesis and the book "Mapmakers of Fortuna" (Catalog item number 6000). Valerie Lovejoy is writing a comprehensive history of the Army Survey Regiment as part of her Master's degree at La Trobe University. The project was initiated with support from the Ex-Fortuna Survey Association. The Bendigo community has contributed about $19,000 towards the writing and publishing of the book. Additional funding came from a scholarship, a $3,000 community grant from the City of Greater Bendigo, and support from the Army's Officer's, Sergeant's, and Soldier's messes. Lovejoy conducted over 80 interviews and distributed questionnaires to former regiment members.Interviewees expressed enthusiasm and pride in their work and the friendships formed during their service. The Army Survey Regiment, based at Fortuna in Bendigo since June 11, 1942, was the largest unit in the surveying corps.The regiment played a significant role in the development of Bendigo and Australia, particularly through mapping efforts. This is a set of seven photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps surveyors setting up observation towers in the field and undertaking survey observations during mapping and geodetic control operations. c1950s. Survey observation towers were used mainly to take angular measurements in flat or heavily forested terrain, where height was necessary to achieve observer’s line-of-sight between field survey station. The Bilby Tower seen in photo .5P was erected to a height of 75 feet (23m) above ground level. The use of the Bilby Tower in Topographic Squadron’s field survey operations from 1955 to 1966 is described in page 54 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. CAPT George Ricketts’ period of service was from 1942 to 1976 reaching the rank of LTCOL. This is a photograph of CAPT Jack Cullen (Ret) and an unidentified person besides the front steps of Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, c1978. Jack Cullen served for many years in the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1920 to 1952, after active service with the AIF in WW1. His service at Fortuna began in 1944 when he was a Lieutenant in charge of a map compilation section. This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors removing a vehicle from the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in September 1986. The Ford XB panel van belonging to WO2 Ted Burgess rolled down the embankment during the night from the SGTs Mess carpark. Despite written off by the insurance company, the panel van was remarkably restored by Ted to roadworthy condition and driven in to Fortuna with a shark’s fin mounted on its roof. This is a set of five photographs of vehicles used by field survey parties during the 1950s and 1960s. The first two photos show unidentified surveyors and field survey vehicles departing the Army Survey Regiment’s transport compound. The third photo of LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood and CAPT Jim Stedman standing beside an early 1950s International light truck was taken at a field survey camp at Camooweal, QLD. LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1951 to 1962. As the longest serving commanding officer of the unit, there was many changes implemented. LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood’s period as CO is covered in more detail in pages 48-49 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. CAPT Jim Stedman later reached the rank of Colonel, was Director of Military Survey from 1975 to 1978 and was appointed as Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment, Retd) of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1978 to 1983. The International truck and low loader trailer in Photo .4P was carrying RASvy’s field deployable printing press, the George Mann Double Crown. This set of 16 photographs were taken in mid-1990 during a family function held at the BBQ area of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Traditionally the cutting of the cake was performed by the Unit commanding Officer and the youngest soldier. The name of the soldier assisting CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol is not known. The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press in late 1990. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1989 to 1991. Partly obscured behind the CO was Mr Bruce Reid, who was the newly elected federal member for Bendigo. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster printing press. These six photos were taken in the grounds of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna in spring 1991. MAJ Ray Redman appears in his mess dress by the Roman fountain, serving a silver service morning tea to CPL Pat Drury, as a result of a losing bet on the 1991 Rugby League Grand Final. Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed Penrith, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Penrith reversed the result the following year against Canberra winning their first premiership. These photographs of Prime Minister Hon RJ Hawke’s visit to the Army Survey Regiment were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo in March 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The one-hour visit was a rare opportunity for RA Svy to demonstrate to its Prime Minister the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It was also an opportunity to take him through historic Fortuna Villa. This is a set of 18 photographs of contractors preparing the foundations for the construction of Lithographic Squadron’s new Printing Building at Fortuna, Bendigo on the 2nd of October 1987. The building was purpose built to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster Press printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. This is a set of 16 photographs of Lithographic personnel and equipment taken at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The Army Svy Regt printed hydrographic charts for the Royal Australian Navy and operated the chart library in the Coach House as seen in photo .16P. Tom Chisolm, John Hogan and Joe Farrington fulfilled the role of the RAN Liaison Officer from 1965 to 1996. Hydrographic Charts were an essential authoritative source for the depiction of coastal and offshore features shown on RA Svys’ map and chart products. This set of eight photographs of superseded AUTOMAP 1 equipment was taken at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, circa 1983. The photos were taken in one of the Q-store buildings. Introduced in 1975, the AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. The replacement AUTOMAP 2 system achieved operational status in August 1983. This is a set of 30 photographs of contractors installing the Army Survey Regiment’s new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 printing press in Lithographic Squadron’s purpose-built printing building at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. These 12 photos were taken at the Army Survey Regiment in the grounds of Fortuna in September 1990. CPL Pat Drury in formal service dress served a silver service morning tea by the lake, as a result of a losing bet on the 1990 Rugby League Grand Final to MAJ Ray Redman, who appears in a Canberra Raiders rugby league top. Pat Drury Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed the Penrith Panthers, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Ray Redman reciprocated the following year, as the Penrith Panthers reversed the result against Canberra winning their first premiership. This is a set of seven photographs of map grid production using co-ordinatorgraphs at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1960s to 1970s. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph introduced in 1962 was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. Mapping PNG presented the Regiment with many challenges. WO1 Farrington and CPL John Dean developed computer software for the digitally controlled co-ordinatorgraph, the Calcomp 718 Flatbed Plotter. Much time was saved by automatically plotted cartographic grids and graticules, and automatically draw base compilation sheets complete with aerial triangulated stereo model control. This could be used for a number of maps and was the first step towards map automation. SGT Bill Boyd appearing in photo .1P reach the rank of WO1 and for 11 years was the technical warrant officer at the Detachment Army Survey Regiment located at Bonegilla, Victoria. He was awarded the OAM, the Order of Australia Medal for the development of the Flexiflow quality control system. This system comprised a series of job plans and charts linked to a task allocation to resource magnetic planning board. Using critical path analysis and task prioritisation, complex job planning was efficiently scheduled, and re-prioritisations readily made. Reproduction requirements were effectively coordinated by way of weekly courier to the Army Survey Regiment. Supervisors and technicians fully embraced the system as they could understand their role, others around them and the positive production achievements. Bendigo. In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These six photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa.
