From the Argus, Friday 18 July 1879:- SAFETY MINING CAGES. The report of the board on safety mining cages was laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly fortnight The board, which has tested the following inventions Nances, Williams patent, Jackson and Middleton's patent Sesmours patent, Allans patent, and Hassan a patent, reports as follows - 1. That the preponderance of evidence given by miners and others qualified to form an opinion is strongly in favour of the adop-tion of a safety cage for general use in the mines of this colony, provided that a reliable invention can be brought forward, and its practical utility satisfactorily determined 2. That in view of the rapid increase of cage accidents, and supported by the evidence before them, the board are of opinion that some special provision should be made to check such a prolific source of danger as is shown to exist in the working of the shaft and machinery employed for winding purposes. 3. That this check could be imposed by means of such a regulation as that at present contained in the statute, i e -" Every cage used in a mine shall be fitted with special and suitable appliances to prevent its sudden fall down a shaft and also to prevent its coming into contact with the poppet heads." The board, however, consider that mine proprietors should be permitted to exercise their own discretion in the selection of safety cages, but safety hooks and balance catches must be used in connexion with every case 4. This well-produced but water-damaged book of Longfellows Poetry, was part of the former Warrnambool Mechanics Institute Library and Museum collection. The custody of this collection was assumed by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in the 1970s. Supporting provenance indicates the book was retrieved from the sea at Loch Ard Gorge soon after the shipwreck of the same name in June 1878. This book was given to the Warrnambool Museum curator Joseph Archibald by its finder, the Warrnambool Standard editor Henry Davis in October 1883. A letter from Mr Davis describing the poignant circumstances of his discovery is also in the Flagstaff Hill collection. A transcript of this letter is displayed next to the book in the Great Circle Gallery at the Maritime Village (reg. no. 2292). The story behind this book prompted Mr Archibald to write to the sole surviving female passenger from the LOCH ARD, Eva Carmichael, asking if the book was hers. Miss Carmichael replied by handwritten letter in January 1884, advising that the volume of poems did not belong to her: “We had a ‘Longfellow’, but our book had a green cover”. This letter is also in the Flagstaff Hill collection (reg. no. 2290.4).The book is rare as it has survived a shipwreck in relatively good condition. It is an example of personal possessions carried by a shipboard passenger in the 1870s. It holds significance for its connection to the renowned poet, Henry Wardsworth Longfellow. The book is important for its probable association with the wreck of the vessel Loch Ard in 1878. The LOCH ARD shipwreck is of State significance and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register S417. A volume of poetry by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is bound in blue-purple cloth on thick board, with black lettering and curling-vine design, framed by gold border. In the centre of the front cover is a raised smooth-white ellipse with crimped edges, now worn bare but with traces of an original brightly coloured floral design. This white centre of supple leather is also framed by a decorative gold border. The upper case lettering on the front cover reads ‘Longfellow’s Poetical Works’. The edges of the blue material are faded and worn. The pages are corrugated by water damage but their original gold-edged condition is still evident. The front and back covers are scored with singed holes approximately 1.5cm diameter, situated about the centre edge of each side and in roughly corresponding positions. These holes may be from an original book-latch or fastening. However they have since been damaged by a hot piercing object, which has blackened the holes and extended the damage into the enclosed pages. The spine of the book features a stylised oak tree in gold, rising from bared roots to serrated leaves and acorns. The letters “LON[DON]” at the top of the spine and “W.P.NI[MM]O” at the bottom. The book cover has separated from the majority of stitched pages, along with a number of title pages, which are now loosed from the binding. These 3 plaques were originally placed on 3 doors within the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo in recognition of the years of service as volunteers to the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch & Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch in 2011. Over time the small plaques were added regarding their ongoing volunteer years and passing. During the renovations to the Soldiers Memorial Institute & Museum which closed in 2016 all plaques were taken down that were in the building. This is an 1877 document, the Letters of Administration in connection with the will and probate of William Ellis, a veterinary surgeon from Wimmera Street, Stawell. He died after an altercation with W. Richards, the landlord of the Post Office Hotel, where he was knocked against the wall of the verandah of the hotel. He left a small estate, with his property valued at under £107. This document is only of interest in that it came from the former legal offices of Mackay Taylor in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. It originally came from Thomas Goodall, a legal clerk in the office of lawyer Ernest Chambers who passed it on to George Mackay, the lawyer in the forerunner firm of Mackay Taylor where it remained until the firm of Mackay Taylor ceased to exist and the buildings were cleaned out. This is a piece of parchment folded and sealed at the bottom edge with a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria. The material in the document is handwritten in black ink. William Ferguson was a watchmaker, jeweller and oculist-optician in Warrnambool in the early part of the 20th century. He was also the Mayor of Warrnambool in 1901-2. James Bostock, a grazier, was a member of the prominent Bostock family who were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district, coming from Tasmania in the mid 1840s. This docket is of interest because both parties, James Bostock and William Ferguson were prominent in Warrnambool’s historyThis is a docket issued to James Bostock in 1908 by William Ferguson, watchmaker and oculist. It has printed red lines and other blue printed matter on a cream-coloured paper. It has information inserted on the printed lines in black ink. It also has some star-shaped ornamentation at the top and scattered throughout. The paper is slightly torn at the bottom edge and discoloured in several places. ‘Jas. This folder came from the photographic studio of Alex Wilkins. For over 35 years in the 20th century he was one of the best-known commercial photographers in Warrnambool. In 1938 he purchased the building known as Jordan Studios (94 Liebig Street) and worked there until the 1960s. In the 1940s he became interested in producing movie films documenting local news and scenes. The name ‘McKinney’ on this folder indicates that the contents belonged to someone in the Warrnambool area as William McKinney had a general store in Lava Street in the 1870s and 80s and there are still McKinney residents in Warrnambool today. This folder is of some interest as it comes from the studio of Alex Wilkins, one of Warrnambool’s most important photographers in the 20th century. This is buff-coloured paper folded in three places to make a folder with sleeves at each end to insert photographs or photograph negatives. The folder is stitched with cotton at the top and the bottom and some of the stitching is coming undone. The inside sleeves have black printed advertising material on them and the front cover has a red and black image of two little girls. This bottle was found under a building some years ago (Hand’s tobacconist shop, Liebig Street, Warrnambool). It is believed to be a beer bottle from the Warrnambool brewery of Sheldrick and Co. In 1868 Walter Sheldrick formed a company and established the New Brewery at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets, Warrnambool. Two of the original directors, Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price, took over the business under the title of Sheldrick and Co. When Walter Sheldrick died in 1876 Richard Sheldrick succeeded his father in the business. In the early 1890s Richard Sheldrick sold out and by 1892 a group of Warrnambool businessmen was operating the brewery. In 1894 it was sold to William McGee and Company and in 1922 the brewery closed when the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries took over the business.This bottle is of interest as an example of a beer bottle from Sheldrick’s New Brewery. This brewery was prominent in Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a green glass beer bottle with a rounded body and a heavily indented base producing an inverted hump inside the bottom of the bottle. The neck is rounded with a moulded glass top. This letter holder could have been used in the past in an office or business or even in the home. It could have been used to hold letters that were to be answered or posted. Its size made it suitable for a small office. The item is of interest because of the testimonials on the label pasted on the base. One is from the British Prime Minister, William Gladstone and the other is from another British Prime Minister, the Marquis of Salisbury. Both testimonials indicate that they were written when the men were in office as Prime Ministers. This item has no known local significance but it is retained as an interesting example of office equipment in the past. This letter holder has a rectangular piece of wood acting as a base with a small hole at one end. The bottom of the base has a paper label pasted on. The label, a little torn, has black and yellow printing with details of the manufacturer. Affixed to the top of the base with metal clips is an arched piece of metal in a spiral shape. The spaces between the rings on the spiral metal piece are sufficiently taut to hold over 30 letters. This item comes from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie and contains a clear photograph of their family home, Aroona (19 Princess Street, Warrnambool). Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. This calendar is of interest as it contains a photograph of Aroona, the early 20th century residence of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie. The photograph is at least 54 years old and so has historic significance, especially for local researchers.This is a piece of lightweight cream-coloured cardboard with a calendar for the year 1954 printed in blue on the bottom half of the sheet and some blue decorative patterns around the calendar. The top half of the sheet has a black and white photograph of a house inserted in slots with a blue border around the photograph. This is a school badge, probably attached to a school cap. The Warrnambool Academy was a private school for boys operating from 1900 to 1911. It was established by Richard Lawson in partnership with William Oakley, firstly in the Methodist Sunday School Hall in Koroit Street and then in ‘Upton’ in Canterbury Road. It was called the Warrnambool College Academy after 1903 following the purchase of Walter Murdoch’s private school, Warrnambool College. The Lawson/Oakley school was a successful one with a former pupil, Philip Le Couteur, becoming the Victorian Rhodes Scholar in 1908. William Oakley later joined the State Technical School system and became Principal of Wonthaggi Technical School. Richard Lawson became a teacher at Warrnambool High School and later a lecturer in education at Melbourne University and then Professor of Education at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. The badge may have belonged to a member of the Baulch family as a ‘Mr Baulch’ is listed as the donor 48 years ago.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of one of Warrnambool’s important private schools early in the 20th century.This is a bronze-coloured badge in the shape of a shield with lettering around the edge and with a scroll with lettering at the bottom of the shield.
