The vintage brass kerosene lamp became popular in the mid-19th century after Canadian physician Abraham Gesner invented kerosene distillation in 1846. Brass was prized for making the fuel reservoirs, burner collars, and stands because it resisted rust, supported heavy glass chimneys, and added a warm, decorative finish to Victorian homes.

A vintage brass kerosene lamp with a clear glass chimney with frilled rim. The brass fuel reservoir has a simple lined pattern and fittings above to hold the burner and wick mechanisms.
