Minute book from Victorian Women's Basketball Association (later Netball Victoria) meetings from July 1934 to March 1938. This book documents the developments of netball in Australia during the 1930's, including rule changes and national championships.

The item is significant to the collection due to its explanation of key developments of netball in Australia. The book records results from annual state and national championships and also rule changes and adjustments.

Historical information

This 1940 Victorian State team win the interstate night carnival. This would be the last carnival until the 1947 carnival in Hobart due to WWII, which Victoria also won. The coach was Edith Hull (not listed on photo). The 1940 interstate carnival was held in Melbourne.

Significance

The coach was Edith Hull, who throughout the 1930s was heavily involved in women's basketball in Victoria. As mentioned before this was the last interstate carnival for 7 years due to World War 2, however Queensland invited states and touring teams for a carnival in 1941, this was declined as it seemed to be ill advised as they focused their attentions to raising funds through war appeals.

Details the minutes of the Victorian women's basketball Association (later Netball Victoria) from 1960-1966. This includes Statement of Recepts and Expenditure for this time period. Includes loose pages outlining the proposal to combine the Women's Basketball Association and the Victorian Women's Night Basketball Association and the Victorian Women's Basketball umpires association.

Handwritten message from 'Chris' to 'Lorna', dated 9 August 1996, noting that 'This card is specially selected!'. Most of text refers to Chris's family trip to Finland and seems unrelated to netball.

Significance

The inclusion of such important people makes this photo significant. This team would win the interstate carnival for 1932, and many of these players featured as players or coaches later in the decade where Victoria would dominate. L.C Mills was the foundation president for the V.W.B.B.A, while Edith Hull, Ethel McCarthy, Lorna McConchie and Becky Douglas would either play, captain or coach the national team, while McConchie would umpire in later decades.

Historical information

Women's Night Basketball (Netball) commenced in Victoria in the 1930's, with this incarnation of the Hartley Cup being awarded perpetually to the the 'A' grade premiers from 1964 to 1981.

Inscriptions & Markings

Awarded to the Victorian Women's Night Basketball 'A' Grade Premiers, the Hartley Cup trophy contains engravings identifying: - around the base, the premiers from 1964 until 1981; - at the rear of the trophy, the premiers from 1952 until 1963.

Significance

The team photo does not have a team name, and the V.G.B.B.A may possibly be an acronym for Victorian Girls Basket Ball Association, just as the V.W.B.B.A is the Victorian Women's Basket Ball Association. Myrtle McLeod (nee Robinson) is in the team photo, she goes on to become a significant player in the 1930s in the Victorian state teams.

This is a team photo of the Victorian State Women's Basketball (Netball) Team in 1930. This picture was taken in Brisbane where the interstate carnival was held in 1930..

Significance

Players such as Edith Hull, Ethel McCarthy featured throughout the 1930s and 1940s which featured significant tours from NZ (by NZ in 1936 and then to NZ in 1948). Many of the players photographed in this 1930 picture represented Victoria for many years to come, making this an early appearance from a dominant Victorian Team.

Historical information

This is a watch presented to MISS L.C.Mills on the September 25 1934 as a token of appreciation by the V.W.B.B.A., the Victorian Women's Basket Ball Association.

Significance

The watch presented to L.C. Mills by the V.W.B.B.A is significant as Ms Mills was one of the first to recieve a life membership in 1936 according to documents.
