A comedy surf film featuring Tom Carroll, Kong Elkerton, Bryce Ellis, Mark Sainsbury, and Ross Clarke-Jones as the Wiz. The Wiz stumbles on an old book about making your own wax and mixes a batch which magically transports him and his friends to some of the world's best surf spots. Music by popular Australian band GANGgajangMAD WAX had a national theatrical release in 1987. The film was shown at surf clubs, pubs and other surf film related venues during this period. The film is significant for the surfers who appear in the film (2 time World Champion Tom Carroll) and the 'loose' narrative thread which was common place in many surf films during the eighties. The film features Mark Sainsbury a popular professional surfer from New South Wales who suddenly died of a brain anueryism on 6th AUgust 1992. The poster and cover art for the VHS case were done by noted Quiksilver designer/artist Peter Webb. GIDGET was written by Frederick Kohner the father of the real Gidget, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman. The book is based on Kathy's experiences as a 15 year old girl at Malibu Beach, Southern California during the summer of 1957 discovering Moondoggie, the Big Kahuna and surfing. Moves on to beach activities and dinghy sailing supervised by Legatees. Back at Somers there is a comic performance of Goldilocks in front of a large audience of younger Junior Legatees and the supervising Legatees, which ends with a bearded Goldilocks being taken away in a police car. A service in the bush chapel is then shown before we see the older boys throwing one of their number off a jetty. A volleyball game completes the film. Begins with an unseen business man asking his secretary to ring his wife to tell her he will be late and is going to visit one of his other families. We see him driving his car, which is full of smoke from his pipe, whilst the narrator explains what Legacy does. The Legatee sheds his coat and trilby hat to play cricket with the fatherless son before having tea and cake with the widow whilst her story and that of her two children is told - details of the Legacy assistance are given. The film then moves to Legacy House where exercise classes are taking place and the smoking pipe makes a reappearance. Information about Legacy's work for the health and wellbeing of Junior Legatees is given, as well as details of the Mother's Club. The film shows the many Legacy committees at work before moving on to holidays organised for Junior Legatees at a beach side cottage - there is no indication of which city is featured at this stage but the beach could be Bondi. Widows are shown meeting at Legacy House, and then we see more elderly widows at Lady Gowrie House. Kyle Williams House for convalescent children is featured and is located near Sydney, which would indicate that the film is about Sydney Legacy. Archbold House, a hostel for girls, and Glen Mervyn House for boys are also featured, as is Cull House for boys undertaking apprenticeships. The film notes that there were 88,000 widows and children in Legacy's care, and the pipe smoking Legatee is seen driving the fatherless boy to tennis practice before the film concludes by saying that Legacy is contributing to the future of the nation. Four black and white photos of Somers camp, in 1931. One show a corrugated iron building that had been built and what looks like a prank being played on a Legatee in suit and cap. Also one of junior legatee Graham Billett by some camp buildings. Another shows Gwen Smith. Plus a group of youths on the beach. All are from the same film. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays.
