The School officially began in 1874 under head teacher Robert Harris, in rooms of the then Christmas Hills Post Office Store. By 1879, authorities agreed a new school was required. As with the citing of the Hall, there was considerable local controversy over whether the school should be built on the high point of School Lane, or the current location (then known as Scrubby Point). Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Huntingdale Golf club was the site of many social events for Legatees and Widows clubs. This appears to be an annual major fundraising golf day. Legatee John Stevenson is holding a board showing the rounds and the winners of the Dallas Brookes Trophy for Open Pairs, 1992. It was in an album of photos from 1992 and 1993. The article in the Answer says that the association with the Huntingdale golf club began in 1933 and over the years over $255,000 has been raised for Legacy. The Open Mixes Foursomes is usually held in December and the Ladies Day is annually in October. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached French waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Legatees Lucky Luscombe, George Woodward, Stuart Leslie and John Stevenson (President in 1993). These colour photos were taken at the same time as the black and white photo (00909) used to promote the 1993 WWI widows luncheon. A legatee function in Legacy House with the Hon. Lindsay Thompson CMG speaking. Date unknown but the men beside him are L/ John Stevenson and L/ Tony Norris who were president in 1993 and 1990 respectively. The paper label says his speech allowed members to share some of his parliamentary reminiscences. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1980s to 1990s. Two photographs of Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped promote Legacy Week in 1990. She had reached 101 years of age. Mrs Fotheringham is also seen at the annual Commemoration for Students ceremony in April 1990 (in 00845) with two other widows which implies she might have been on the Widows' Club Committee, and also on a visit to the Shrine with a Legatee and another lady in 00579. Photos show the Legatees and widows marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall behind a bagpipe band - it was Widows' Sunday when there is a service at the Shrine for the Legacy Widows. An article in The Answer newsletter in September 1993 mentions that the Legatees and widows set off from St Pauls Cathedral in a 'Pilgrimage to the the Shrine' behind the Hawthorn City Pipe Band. There may be more photos and a proof sheet still to come. It is assumed to be 1993 Widows Sunday as Legatee John Stevenson is in the front row, he was president in 1993 which was Legacy's 70th Anniversary. According to the paper label "Expatriate Clive James was named the 1993 Legacy Personality of the Year at a special function conducted by Melbourne Legacy. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." It was a "Breakfast with Clive James" at the Regent Hotel in February 1993, and Australian author Patsy Adam-Smith and Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop were also guests. (See also 00751 and 00753). Carlton Refuge/Carlton Home was established in 1857 in Madeline Street, Carlton (relocating in 1890 to Keppel Street, Carlton). The Carlton Home provided maternity care for married and unmarried mothers, and residential care for infants and toddlers unable to be at home with their mother. It also operated a day-care centre for children. Most of the residents were mothers or children on private placements. The Children's Welfare Department used the Carlton Home as a maternity home for wards, a foster home for infant wards, and for children requiring placements under the infant life protection provisions of the Children's Welfare Act. By the late 1940s, the home was in a bad state of repair and it closed in 1949. In 1951, the facility reopened as the Queen Elizabeth Maternal and Child Health Centre that also operated as an Infant Welfare and Mothercraft Training School. The Centre provided after-care for nursing mothers and babies transferring from maternity hospitals, and specialised care for babies referred by private practitioners and the Social Welfare Department – babies who were premature, frail or had feeding or similar problems.
