Document - Music Folio, Mendelsshon Lieder ohne Worte, Circa 1900
This collection of works, “songs without words” was written in the 1830’s by Mendellson. He was of the opinion that the music should stand alone and hence no need for words. This collection of his work for piano solos is still on the music syllabus today. The stamp on the front cover J.B. Shepherd and Son relates the Shepherd family music store in Liebig Street, which operated around the turn of the 20th century . They sold pianos and other musical instruments as well as doing repairs and tuning and lessons. This collection of music scores by Mendelssohn is significant firstly because it is still used by music students 160 years after it was written and secondly this copy has local significance as it was owned by Grace Rome who was born in 1902 and was the daughter of one of Warrnambool’s most successful and longest living business people Thomas Rome, who incidently made one of the earliest sound recordings in Australia.Cream coloured card cover with dark green cloth binding with the title Mendelssohn in red text with black flourish. Other text on cover is black. Edition Peters at the top of cover in black text. Pages contain music scores .132 pages. Kullak printed on front cover. Light blue stamp, “J. E. Wedding Horeshoe, 1942
This horseshoe was carried by Ena Todd when she married Jack Heazlewood in Warrnambool in 1942. A horseshoe ornament was often carried by brides in the 20th century (and also still are today) as horseshoes are traditionally a symbol of good luck. They were usually home-made by family members and other well-wishers. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at the Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived on Sydney. This horseshoe is of interest, firstly as a sample of the type of good luck ornament often carried by brides in the 20th century, and secondly as a memento of the wedding day of Ena Todd, a resident of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This is a wooden horseshoe, painted silver and decorated with raised white flowers and green tracery. Attached to the horseshoe is a white ribbon tied with a bow at the end. The ribbon is creased and dirty.Good Lucktodd & heazlewood families, warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Photograph - Three Old Sunshine Factories, Pratt, Charles Daniel, (1892 - 1968), Photographed circa late 1920's to early 1930's
These three factories clustered together and close to Albion Station provided manufacturing type of employment for several decades. All the factories have now disappeared and have been replaced by retail or service businesses. Spalding has been replaced by a Bunnings Hardware store, while the main retail outlet on the Nettlefolds site is Harvey Norman. Ironically part of the Phoenix Fireworks site is now occupied by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, as well as other small businesses including a smash repair business, and a tyre retailer. The photograph provides a historical record of some of the types of manufacturing industries that existed in Sunshine, before retail or service industries began to replace them. Many of the younger generation do not know that fireworks, screws, or some sports items were manufactured in Sunshine not so long ago, and where the factories existed. The image depicted in this photographic copy is believed to be from circa late 1920's to early 1930's, and shows the NETTLEFOLDS, SPALDING, and the PHOENIX FIREWORKS factories. These factories were located in North Sunshine on the north side of Ballarat Road near Albion Station. Nettlefolds and Spalding are on the corner of Ballarat Road and McIntyre Road, with Nettlefolds being on the west side of McIntyre Road and Spalding on the east. Phoenix Fireworks factory is composed of small huts, and is situated on the north side of Phoenix Street at the rear of the Spalding factory. The photograph also shows a row of residential houses on Garnet Street which is on the east side of the Phoenix factory. Ballarat Road is still an undivided road and on the south side is a plantation of trees that once stretched from near Albion Station to Anderson Road. Other roads visible are Suffolk Road and Westmoreland Road.Nettlefolds Screw Worksnettlefolds, spalding, phoenix fireworks, screw works, ballarat road, mcintyre road, phoenix street, garnet street, westmoreland road, suffolk road. -

Plaque, A. H. Walker, COAT OF ARMS - Shire of Braybrook Victoria, Unknown date of manufacture
From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook. It is mainly blue, yellow and red coloured with black writing, and has images of a cow, sheep, and hay, and also indicates a reference to industry.Shire of Braybrook Victoria / Dieu Et Mon Droit / By Industry / A. Albums, Index book containing contact prints
Sourced from Alex Stitt's extensive archive, this well used index book provides a fascinating insight into the operations of the designer's graphic design studio in the 1970s. Used as a repository to catalogue client artwork, each contact print was given a hand-written code, evidence of a simple system to manage the process of creating artwork. The book's monochromatic pages speak of a time long past when design was a manual undertaking, a time of hard copies, not hard drives. The bluestone is laid on crushed yellow ochre sandstone, with the base encircled by indigenous flowering plants. Each rock represents one of the six clans that made up the Boon wurrung. For thousands of years, Boon wurrung women and children congregated in this area during special periods in spring and summer. The area was rich in seafood and had fresh water wells dotted around it. Among the Banksia trees that provided shelter, grew indigenous plants and flowers through which the women made garlands to wear in their hair.boon wurrung, blossom, sculpture, public art, indigenous, bayside indigenous coastal trail, ellen josé, ellen jose, bluestone, sandstone -

Ceramics (bowl): Mary-Lou Pittard, Mary-Lou Pittard, Decorative Bowl, 1983
Mary-Lou began exhibiting in the mid 1980s and over the years has been involved in producing unique pieces as well as developing a large range of domestic ware. In 1984, six months after graduating from a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Phillip Institute of Technology, Mary-Lou was invited to present a solo exhibition at Devise Gallery in South Melbourne. This objective, she says, compelled her to find a studio and was an incentive to focus on developing her ceramic practice independently.Mary-Lou Pittard holds close ties to the Shire of Nillumbik - living and working within Eltham. Her Eltham North Mudbrick Studio employed 5 assistants until recently when Mary-Lou and partner Chris Pittard have scaled down operations. They now produce everything themselves and find that this enables them to focus on producing unique, sculptural ceramic works. Mary-Lou is currently exploring the fine qualities of porcelain and combining these with her ongoing passion for decorative colour and form. 'Decorative Bowl' is a wheel-thrown/moulded bowl, oblong in shape and has been manipulated by hand. Narrow sections have been incised from the main body, perhaps a practical design feature for air circulation, and the rim has been altered to form a jagged edge. Bold colourful shapes decorate the interior of the bowl. They have been applied directly to the bisque surface and subsequently covered with a transparent glaze which protects them and enhances their permanency.mary-lou pittard, ceramic, chris pittard, eltham, nillumbik -

Textile - Dyers Apron
Over time, apron design and function diversified, and many trades and professions developed their own versions. Aprons were practical for protecting the wearer’s clothing as well as signifying their trade or craft. Wool dyeing was an industrialised profession to aid in the mass production of synthetic dyed clothing. This dyer’s apron would have protected the wearer from the chemicals of the dyer’s trade. There are several ways that fabrics would have been dyed including direct application, exhaust methods, continuous methods and waterless dyeing methods. At the 1978 Festival of Kew, a number of organisations, including the City of Kew, the Kew Historical Society, Trinity Boys Grammar School and local Girl Guides participated in a re-enactment of the expedition of the party of Charles Grimes in surveying the Yarra River as far as Kew in February 1803. The location for the event was Yarra Bend Park near the Studley Park Boat House. The event was organised by the Kew Historical Society. The re-enactment was captured by a number of amateur photographers as well as by a photographer from the local Progress Press.Local communities select events to commemorate according to their shared history and values. Commemorations of colonial exploration were popular with local historical groups such as the Kew Historical Society in the twentieth century. In re-enacting events such as the Grimes survey of the Yarra, students from a local school were encouraged to take on specific roles, including play-acting individuals involved in the survey party as well as members of the local Wurundjeri People. The photographs, taken by amateur and professional photographers, represent a period in time when the dominant values were those shared by the descendants of European settlers in Victoria.
