This Australian Womens Army Services (AWAS) Hat belonged to Marion (Tib) Owler. Established in August 1941, the AWAS in consisted of 6000 women by January 1942. Some 20,000 were in service by the end of that same year. They worked in roles including administration, driving, catering, signals and intelligence, and were paid around two-thirds of their male counterparts. The item represents Australian women’s army uniform headdress from WW 2. The hat’s stylish design was an important aspect of the recruiting campaign for the women’s services of 1942.Fur felt brimmed hat. standard style of a jacket battle dress from the late 1940s to 1982; it was used for parade dress; this jacket was worn by a warrant officer class 2 of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.This jacket has historical significance because it representative of a standard style service battle dress worn by soldiers of the Australian Army Post WW2 until the introduction of the modern polyester cotton uniforms. It is also in excellent condition, which is special considering it's age. This belt was manufactured for military service. It is presumably a World War Two era article of Army uniform.This Army belt was presumably made and used during the World War Two era and therefore has historic value. Brown leather belt with a brass buckle. The belt has twelve holes in two rows at one end for fastening into the buckle. The very tip narrows to a point. There is light brown stitching along the edges of the belt. There are two brass studs which hold the leather in a loop of the other end. There is an additional piece of leather fixed to this looped edge for holding the other end in place. The buckle is made of a silver coloured brass and has two rods which pass through two of the twelve holes for fastening. A speech by Colin Bannister about Legacy in 2007. It mentions Melbourne Legacy was helping 21,700 and 350 children and had spent $1.85m in 2006 on its beneficiaries. In Australia Legacy supported 126,000 widows and 1,800 children. It also recounts his background with Legacy. After he left the Regular Army after active service in Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War. He joined Legacy in 1976. He was aware of Legacy due to his father and father-in-law were both impaired from their service in WW1. And a brother from WW2 and Vietnam was a member of Canberra Legacy. His son also became a member of Ballarat Legacy. The Ordnance QF 18-pounder was the standard British field gun of the First World War and was used by both British and Commonwealth Forces. It was horse drawn until the army replaced horses with motor vehicles in the 1930s.
