The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Jan Rigby, CMHS member, has provided research information about Jasper Hale b 1805 in Gloucester, England, transported to NSW 1830, ‘freed man ‘ 1839, purchased land in Dendy’s Special Survey 1844, sold this land 1846 and died 1884 in Parkes NSW. On arrival as a convict in 1830 his occupation is bricklayer and he can ‘ read and write’. Water flooded Joyce Park, the grounds of the Cottage and a little seeped into Grace Lewis Room in December 2009 when a water main at the neighbouring Bowling Club burst, but little damage occurred and the Glen Eira Council will install drainage pipes between Box Cottage and the Bowling Club. In January, 2 brush tailed possums had taken up residence in the Barn and after failed attempts by Helen and Dennis to move them, Glen Eira Council relocated them. An article ‘Re-visiting some ‘Box Cottage’ Facts recounts the discovery of the ‘Cottage’ in a shed on the property purchased by Mr Laurie Lewis from the Reitman family in 1977. Thankfully Mr Lewis appreciated such a find and donated it to the City of Moorabbin, and together it was dismantled and re-constructed in Joyce Park, Ormond in 1988 – 100 yards from the original site. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. Born on the 5th of August,1926, Margaret Gwen Hardy was the very first Commissioner of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) and was appointed in 1975, a major victory for women at the time. This was the first time in the 84 year history of the organisation. Hardy had also been a Lilydale Councillor and went on to become the first female Shire President. Along with her work commitments as part of the Board, Hardy was the wife of Dr. Bill and had three children, two sons and a daughter. Next door to her home in Mt Evelyn was her husband’s surgery, where Hardy also worked part-time as a Manager. Hardy was also involved with the Lilydale High School Mother’s Club, she was the President of the Mt. Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association, on the Advisory Council of Monbulk High School and was the Secretary of the Lilydale Citizens Advisory Service at the time. This staff newsletter highlights the historically significant achievement of Cr. Gwen Hardy becoming the first female commissioner to work at the Board in 84 years. Corporal Phillip Edward Cook, 4470, 46th Battalion AIF Over 300 men from the Shire of Whittlesea enlisted during WWI. One of these was Corporal Cook, son of the Rev. Richard and Elizabeth Cook, and husband of Jessie May Cook of Whittlesea. On 27 July 1915, at the age of 33, Phillip Cook enlisted in the AIF. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. The gavel was presented by Russell Worland (Acting Secretary Glenelg Region Water Authority) to the inaugural chairman of the Glenelg Region Water Authority 1995, Sandra Hempel. Glenelg Region Water Authority amalgamated the previous authorities of Glenelg-Wannon Water Board, Hamilton Water Board, Shire of Dundas and Shire of Mount Rouse Water and Sewerage Authorities and was constituted on 1 July 1994. Glenelg Region Water Authority was then amalgamated with South West Water and Portland Coast Water to form Wannon Water on 1 July 2005.Presented to the first chairman of the newly constituted Glenelg Region Water Authority, a predecessor authority to Wannon WaterWooden turned gavel and a base carved from Konongwootong blackwood, a brass plaque with an inscription. Russell Worland was the secretary of the Hamilton Water Authority and Hamilton Sewerage Authority and became the secretary of the Hamilton Water Board. Kevin Safe was an engineer and later became CEO of Glenelg Water. Hamilton Water Board was constituted in October 1 1983 under the Water and Sewerage Act 1983 and amalgamated Hamilton Waterworks Trust and Hamilton Sewerage Authority. The Board was abolished on July 1 1994 under the Water Act 1989 when it amalgamated with Glenelg-Wannon Water Board, Shire of Glenelg Waterworks Trust and Shire of Mount Rouse Waterworks Trust to form Glenelg Region Water AuthorityMedallion with Insignia worn at official functions.Round silver medallion - with raised symbol of the cornucopia with water coming out of it.
