Historic - Victorian Railways Locomotive Number Plate used on Steam Locomotive 7A Loco: 7A In service Saturday, 6th May 1905 Livery Maroon Owner Puffing Billy Gauge 762 Status Preserved - Operational 7A Built in 1905 and painted Canadian red & dark brown, this locomotive was issued to the Wangaratta to Whitfield line and saw service on all four lines with most of its service on the Upper Fern Tree Gully to Gembrook line. It was temporarily withdrawn from service in 1958 and returned to service at Belgrave in 1962 for the reopening of this line where it has seen almost continuous service since. 1979 saw the early two-tone green colour scheme applied to this loco as a trial even though it never historically carried it, but its physical configuration was not altered accordingly. A collection of papers made by Betty Williamson for a presentation at RVIB, and includes newspaper articles as well as a potted history of the Club. In the 1960's, the RVIB approached engineer George Glover to produce equipment to allow blind people to shoot, based upon that made available at St Dunstan's Hospital in the UK. The rifle range opened in February 1966 at the rear of St Kilda Road with 30 members, and soon became involved in matches with sighted rifle clubs in the area. In these images Captain Fred Berry stands with Canadian competitor Derek Daines, and coach Alley sights for an unknown Rifle Club member. The club had many successful years, competing against teams from Canada and New Zealand in 1968, and had the support of ICIANZ which provided them with free munitions as well as teams to compete against. Anthracite typically occurs in geologically deformed areas due to extreme heating – with temperatures ranging from 170 to 250 °C – caused by igneous intrusions or high geothermal gradients. It is most commonly found in northeastern Pennsylvania in the United States; however, smaller amounts are also found in Australia, China, eastern Ukraine, South Africa, western Canada, and other countries. This specimen was recovered from Tasmania and is 85-95% carbon.Anthracite is the mineral name for hard coal and is the least plentiful of all coal types. It is clean to the touch and, when polished, is used for decorative purposes. Before natural gas and electricity, anthracite was used for domestic heating as it produces little dust, burns slowly, and gives off a minor amount of smoke. However, it is also limited in abundance and expensive. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. The headwaters of Canadian Creek are located in Mt Helen as a series of springs in the vicinity of Gear Avenue. The dam to the north of Gear Avenue was expanded as part of the development of the Information Technology Centre. Recent works have added a large wetland below the dam. Further dams are located on drainage lines within the University of Ballarat grounds. this item was made to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth !! in 1953. In June 1953 , Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and Pakistan, and became the Head of the Commonwealth. Many souvenirs were made to mark this occasion. Some were unique and hand-made. The main sources for crochet and other needlework designs available to women were in journals, magazines and pattern books.This milk jug cover reflects an important pastime for Australian women of the late 19th to mid 20th century. Women's focus was the home and its decoration was important. Embroidery and crochet work was an affordable way to personalise and add aesthetic value, and examples of embroidered and crocheted pieces could be found in most Australian homes, decorating or protecting furniture, floors and walls, and keeping flies and insects away from food. After the closure of the Institute (former skating rink) on Thompson St, the Mission, thanks to the Williamstown Lightkeepers Auxiliaire and funds donated by the High Commissioner of Canada, the former E,S & B Bank on Nelson Place was purchased and renovated. The St Nicholas chapel was added at the back of the building. Architects Arthur Peck and his eldest son, Hugh, were commissionned for the design. Arthur Peck was himself a keen yachstman. The TAMA Collection comprises an extensive survey of contemporary (post-1970s) textile and fibre art practices in Australia with key international influences represented from time to time, such as Marcel Marois’ Mutation - Time: Blue, Grey, White, Red. Canadian artist Marcel Marois began his career at the height of a period of innovation and dynamic growth in tapestry weaving in the 1970s. Marois is known for his references to pixilated photographic imagery, particularly as seen in newspapers; his weaving recreates the detail of photographic blur. These four tapestries were acquired to commemorate the major contribution of the Gallery’s inaugural director, the late Pamela Gullifer AM, towards the establishment and development of Ararat Gallery in the early 1970s. An extensive and diligent fundraising campaign was undertaken by the local community between 1999 and 2002, challenged by the Canadian dollar strengthening relative to the Australian dollar in that period. Marois’ imagery references political, environmental and social events of his time and location. In this set of woven panels the artist refers to natural elements – air (blue); water (grey); earth (white) and fire (red).

Educational teaching chart used at the Northern District School of Nursing, Rowan Street, Bendigo. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. In 1963 near the town of Sallanches, France two manufacturing companies formed a partnership to create new high-performance skis. The partnership between Starflex skis, produced by Synthetic Plastics, and Dynamic resulted in the production of Dynastar skis. Available Dynastar products has steadily increased since that time to include a wide range of skis, bags, poles, skins and protective garments and equipment. These items are connected to the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. One is a share certificate from the company issued in 1909 to John Bergin of Nirranda and the other is a 1970 handwritten note, possibly from the Tait legal firm in Warrnambool indicating that John Bergen was no longer a shareholder. He may have been deceased or the shares may have been sold previously. The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter factory in Allansford is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. It was established in 1888 and is now operated by the Canadian firm Saputo. These items are of minor interest as mementoes of the early share certificates of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a major dairying business in the Warrnambool district for over 100 years. .1 This is a certificate extracted from a booklet of similar certificates. The Siege of Tobruk Medal was originally available to Australian, New Zealand, British, Indian and Polish troops who saw action during the Siege of Tobruk, between April and December 1941. The medal was commissioned and issued by the Rats of Tobruk Association in 1977. The medal was available to 18 BDE, 24 BDE, 26 BDE, 2/1 PIONEER's and other miscellaneous units. Some RAAF, Free French Air Force and Canadian personnel attached to the Royal Navy were included.This is not an official medal. An interesting article from the Digest of World Reading about Canadian John McCrae and his famous poem "In Flanders Field". It tells of his war service and how the poem was published in Punch on 8 December 1915. He was in the medical service when he succumbed to pneumonia in January 1918. The journal article was sent to the Legacy Co-Ordinating Council who sent it to the archive. The notation H25 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Collected by an earlier archive committee which shows the poem was important to the Legatees. The funnel colours on the model indicate the ship it represents was one of the early ships of the Allan shipping Line designated as a Royal Mail Carrier. Funnel colours are used to identify a ship's owners while at sea from a distance by other vessels. The Allan Shipping Line was started in 1819, by Captain Alexander Allan of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, trading and transporting between Scotland and Montreal Canada, a route which quickly became synonymous with the Allan Line. By the 1830s the company had offices in Glasgow, Liverpool and Montreal, with all of Captain Allan's five sons actively involved with the business. But his second son, Sir Hugh Allan, spearheaded the second generation. In 1854, Hugh launched the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company as part of the Allan Line, and two years later ousted Samuel Cunard to take control of the Royal Mail contract between Britain and North America. By the 1880s, the Allan Line was the world's largest privately owned shipping concern. In 1891, the company took over the State Line, founded in 1872, and was often referred to as the Allan & State Line. In 1897, Andrew Allan amalgamated the various branches of the Allan shipping empire under one company, Allan Line Steamship Company Ltd., of Glasgow. The company by then had added offices in Boston and London. In 1917, under Sir Montagu Allan, who represented the third generation of the Allan family, the company was purchased by Canadian Pacific Steamships, and by the following year, the Allan name had disappeared from commercial shipping. The Allan Line fleet had evolved for decades, changing as new ships were added, lost at sea, sold, or scrapped. The model in Flagstaff Hill's collection could be the SS Canadian or Indian; both were early Allan steam packets that had helped the Allan company secure the Royal Mail Atlantic contract in 1856.The model is of a Royal Mail steamship, with the probability the original ship was owned by the Allan Shipping Line in the mid-19th century and primarily used for the Atlantic mail run between England and Canada. Given the funnel colours and ship design, the model could be the SS Canadian or the Indian; both were the first ships for the company.
