Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. In November 1932, Frank Packer and Ted Theodore purchased the World, a struggling afternoon newspaper owned and operated by the Australian Workers' Union in Sydney, and re-branded it as the Star. Approached by Sir Hugh Denison, who enjoyed a monopoly over the Sydney newspaper market, they were offered 86,500 Pounds to close the paper if they agreed not to publish a morning, evening or Sunday newspaper within a 300-mile radius of the city for three years. Packer and Theodore accepted the offer, the the Weekly was a way of skirting the embargo, it would be a women's newspaper, and it would be self-sufficient. George Warnecke envisioned the Weekly as a publication with an Australian outlook, appealing to all sections of society, and offering an element of news in every article, whether it concern fashion, cookery, or parenting. When the first issue appeared in Sydney on June 10, 1933, it was printed in black-and-white newspaper format and priced at twopence per copy, "the biggest value in the world". It had sold out by lunchtime. 4 x Australian Women's Weekly magazines. Dated:- 1. December 4, 1943; 2. July 29, 1944; 3. August 5, 1944; and 4. September 2, 1944. All were priced at 4d.magazines

On a summer's day in 1891 Sean O'Day, Horse Breaker on James MacLough's "Gooloora" Station, is driving the Scots pastoralist in to the railhead at Overton after his annual inspection of that property. Silent and mature for his age, Sean was born in a dray while it was crossing the river during a flood, and has remained at home in it. Because he is always moving by dawn he is known in the borderland as Daylight O'Day. When MacLough asks him what he will be doing on the morrow O'Day replies that he will be manager. Questioned, he suggests that MacLough realises the background to his joke in that the station hands will, that night, celebrate the passing of the Boss's inspection. As they will have hangovers tomorrow all the work will naturally fall to himself, a teetotaller. MacLough nods assent, but, instead of leaving on the train, books a room for the night and a livery gig for the morrow, and drives himself to Gooloora early next morning. D.J. Martin as O'Day, H.S. A Golden Wattle tree was planted in memory of Eltham District Historical Society life members Harry Gilham (24 Mar 1928-25 Feb 2024; EDHS President 1993-2009) and Sue Law (27 Sep 1937-8 Aug 2023; EDHS President 1985-1993, Vice President 1993-1998 & 2009-2015). In the Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 27 April 1937, page 12: "The C. B. Pedersen was built in 1891. It has visited Australia several times, the most recent occasion having been in 1935, when It was anchored in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, for several weeks, awaiting a suitable cargo. At length the master, (Captain Hjalmar Dahlström) announced that, as no cargo could be obtained he would be prepared to carry passengers in a voyage to Gothenburg, via Torres Strait. Eight persons, including three women and a small boy were accepted as passengers, and signed on as members of the crew at salaries of 1/ a month". Artist Violet Teague was one of the passengers. She painted during the voyage and exhibited her work in 1938. Built in 1891 the C.B Pedersen, a four-masted steel barque (2142 tons) was used as a training Barque. The ship foundered in April 1937, the crew was saved. Several photographs of the C.B. This an advertisement / souvenir for Merrangbaur House in Lakes Entrance. Merrangbaur was in , Lakes Entrance and stood on the on the Prince's Highway, about a kilometre from Lakes Entrance. It was destroyed by fire on the early morning of December 15, 1935. The original residence of the Roadknight family, the first white settlers in the Lakes Entrance district, Merrangbaur House had been conducted as a guest house for many years. Much of the furniture was lost, although a portion of the building, consisting of the ballroom and several bedrooms, was saved Mrs. Anne McInnes, aged more than 80 years, the mother of the proprietress, Miss McInnes, was the only guest sleeping in the house when the fire began and had to be assisted from her blazing bedroom on the ground floor. She was carried through a window by members of the fire brigade and spent the remainder of the night at the house of a friend. Miss McInnes was in Melbourne on a business visit arranging for Christmas bookings, when she was informed of her loss. Alexander Wright was killed whilst performing at the Birmingham Empire as the result of a German air Attack in October 1940. The theatre had a direct hit. The stage name of Alex Wright was 'Navarre' "Prince of Mimics". According to Frank Wright Alex was a great impersonator with a unique range Bass - tenor with many accents (not unlike Peter Dawson) "AUSTRALIAN KILLED An Australian, Alexander Wright, radio variety star, who toured Europe and Australia under the pseudonym of Navarre, was killed during a recent air raid in a Midland . town. His broth-er, Frank Wright, is musical director for the London County council."(Border Morning Mail, 22 Oct 1940) Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. In 1955 the Polish Community in Chile wanted to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the ending of the 2nd World War but, since it was not a happy occasion, as Poland had been betrayed and placed in the Soviet sphere of influence, they chose to create a Pennant with a plea for the Patron Icon of Eastern Poland - Our Lady of the Sharp/Morning Gate (Matka Boska Ostrobramska/Zaranna) in Vilnius (Wilno) - to give them a new Miracle on the Vistula, in reference to an epic battle which took place on 15th August 1922 on the banks of the Vistula (Wisla) River in which the Polish troops defeated the Soviet Army and turned back the march of Communism to the West. This particular Pennant was purchased by Stanislawa Zamecznik (nee Zakrzewska), while living in Chile after deportation from her birth place in Sianozatki near Bychov (Bychow) to Schweningen in Germany from which they emigrated to South America as Displaced Persons. HMAS Melbourne never fired a shot in anger during her career, having only peripheral, non-combat roles in relation to the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation and the Vietnam War. She was, however, involved in two major collisions with allied vessels; though Melbourne was found not to be the primary cause of either incident. The first occurred on the evening of 10 February 1964, in which Melbourne rammed and sank the RAN destroyer HMAS Voyager when the latter altered course across her bow. Eighty-two of Voyager's personnel were killed, and two Royal Commissions were held to investigate the incident. The second collision occurred in the early morning of 3 June 1969, when Melbourne also rammed the United States Navy (USN) destroyer USS Frank E. Evans in similar circumstances. Seventy-four American personnel died, and a joint USN–RAN Board of Inquiry was held. These incidents, along with several minor collisions, shipboard accidents, and aircraft losses, led to the reputation that Melbourne was jinxed. HMAS Melbourne was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Operating from 1955 until 1982, she was the third and final conventional aircraft carrier to serve in the RAN. An aerial photo of the Somme in France during World War One. There are coordinates or numbers in some areas. Also labelled are the Johannes and Anvil Wood. Was with 11 other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board for display at Legacy House at some stage. When they were taken off display they were put in the archive cabinets. The founding legatees all served in World War One so these photos would have been of significant places for them. (see 01888 to 01899). From the AWM: Anvil Wood was a small wood to the north of Peronne that marked the centreline of an attack by the 14th Brigade on the morning of 1 September 1918. The northern approaches to Peronne were covered by numerous field and machine-guns, but the leading battalions of the brigade - the 53rd and 54th - pushed their attack home with determination, and sent the German defenders fleeing back to Peronne. The New Moon is the name of an operetta ,the show was the third and last in a string of Broadway hits for Romberg (after The Student Prince (1924) and The Desert Song (1926)) written in the style of Viennese operetta. It spawned a number of revivals and two film versions, and it is still played by light opera companies. The piece turned out to be "Broadway's last hit operetta",] as World War II and the Golden Age of musicals approached. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GCStJ, GBE (born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. Frank Oliver was MTS chaplain during this period. The Gloucesters did not return to Australia on any official visit until 1965. (see ADB entry for Duke of Gloucester) According to the list of engagements from the Argus, on Saturday the Duke and Duchess left Governor House to visit the Central Institute at 11am where they were received by the Governor and Lady Dugan, the chaplain (Padre Oliver) and members of the committee. They left at 11.15am : the legend of the picture "AS THE DUCHESS LEFT THE MISSION TO SEAMEN Central Institute on Saturday morning, Padre Frank Oliver, chaplain, called for three cheers, which were given heartily."This photograph reveals the contemporaneous relationship between Australians and the British Royal family and connection through the International organisation that is the Mission to Seafarers. Bivouac Hut was built in 1935 on the Northern end of Mt. Bogong, on the Staircase Spur, about halfway to the summit. It was funded by Cleve Cole and he arranged for Walter Maddison to build it. Cleve Cole dedicated his life to the mountains and wanted to make them safer to visit - more huts and improved maps, pole lines and tracks. He perished in the winter of 1936 after attempting to make the first winter crossing from Mt. Hotham to Mt. Bogong on skis. The two others with him, Howard Michell and Mick Hull survived. The weather conditions were extreme at the time and having made the summit of Mt. Bogong they then became disorientated in the blizzard and came down the southern end of Bogong instead of the northern end . Howard Michell made it out to Glen Valley, a small mining town, to get help. Mick and Cleve were carried out on rough bush stretchers and Cleve died a few hours later. The Summit Hut was funded by Howard Michell and built in the 1940's. It was deliberately burnt down in the early 1980's. Bivouac hut was rebuilt in the 1980's.These photographs are of historical significance. Both huts were funded by experienced bushwalkers to provide shelter from the weather and so make walking and skiing in the area safer. They are both now gone with Bivouac being replaced with a more modern structure but there is nothing left of the Summit Hut. 5 coloured photographs, A4 in size, 4 near the summit of Mt.
