Photograph - Australian Flag Raising Ceremony - Army Survey Regiment, Australia Day, 1996
This photograph of a flag raising ceremony by a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment was taken on Australia Day on the 26th of January 1996. It is not known where this ceremony took place, however it could have been in the grounds of Fortuna Villa. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last flag raising ceremonies before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. Flags
Used to signal ships from lightstation. White flags are semaphore flags used for signalling alphabet letters. Salvaged from junk pile and mounted on wooden block. The identical, white hand held flags, which were used as a pair, are each stapled to a dowel. Information on both items indicates they were made by a well known flag, pennant and banner makers, Evan and Evans who were then located at 680 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne and are now in Spencer Street West Melbourne. Founded in 1877, the firm was a co designer of the Australian Flag in 1901. The flags are likely to date from c.1960 - 70 and are currently displayed in the former Keepers' quarters/ weather room mounted on a wooden block. Similar pairs of semaphore flags are held in Wilsons Promontory and Cape Nelson collections. The flags have second level contributory significance for their provenance to the lightstation and flag makers Evan & Evans. Thet have historic value for increasing our understanding of the semaphore signalling system formally used at the lightstation. Two identical white fabric flags stapled to a wooden dowel and secured to a wooden base on an angle. They have blue writing, on tags, on the flags. On tags on both flags, "EVAN & EVANS FLAGS P/L / FLAGMAKERS / 680 ELIZABETH ST / MELB. 3000 3475755" -

Photograph, Shire of Eltham Historical Society Banner; Shire of Eltham, "As We Are" Community Banner Project, 1986, 1986
Tracey Naughton was the former Shire of Eltham Community Arts Officer and was responsible for developing the 'As We Are' project which encouraged a number of local community groups to develop banners. The Society was keen to be involved and the project was kicked off following a talk to the Society's members by Tracey in April 1986. The banner was completed and displayed with a number of other banners at the Eltham Community Centre in October 1986. It was then carried proudly for the first time in front of the Society's Parade Float in the 1986 Eltham Community Festival Parade and subsequent parades through to 1990. In December 1994 the Shire of Eltham ceased to exist and following council amalgamation and the establishment of the new Shire of Nillumbik, the Society's name (Shire of Eltham Historical Society) had become somewhat irrelevant and it was revised in 1995 to Eltham District Historical Society. The immediate downstream impact of this change was the rendering of the Society's Banner to history after only eight years of use. The banner now hangs proudly in our Local History Centre. The Historical Society Banner: Jud Degan worked with this group. The banner was designed by a male member and sewed by women. Sewing the banner renewed the group's knowledge of the area in an innovative way and, in turn, this has renewed the energy of the members to participate in the Society. The emphasis in this banner was to create a work of high standard which would last as part of the area's future heritage. The women particularly gained a sense of the history of their craft skills, enjoying the combination of hand embroidery and new machine embroidery skills shared by Jud. Artefact, Flag, 1997
This small flag has been made by Brauer College in Warrnambool to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool and to mark the 84 years of Brauer College’s existence. Warrnambool was founded in 1847 as a planned town to provide port facilities for the export of produce of the local pastoralists and squatters. Brauer College began as the Warrnambool Technical School in 1913 with John King as the Principal and the original school buildings in Timor Street. In 1958 the school became the Warrnambool Technical College and today this site is occupied by the South West TAFE facility. The secondary school section of Warrnambool Technical College relocated to Caramut Road in Warrnambool and since 1990 has been known as Brauer College. It was named after a local prominent doctor and supporter of State Education – Dr Alfred Brauer. This flag is of some interest as a memento of Warrnambool’s 150th anniversary and of Brauer College’s part in this. This is a rectangular-shaped plastic flag attached with three metal staples to a circular-shaped wooden stick. The flag is green with white printing on both sides and contains the images of the Warrnambool City Council seal and the sea-horse emblem of Brauer College. The flag is partly torn away from the stick at the lower end. ‘Warrnambool -150 years 1847-1997’ ‘Brauer – 84 years 1913-1997’ brauer college, warrnambool, warrnambool’s 150th anniversary -

Flag - VR Flag
This flag was flying at the Wodonga Station when VR Driver John (Jack) Bowden drove past it whilst at the controls of the “Southern Aurora” on 7 February 1969. The Sydney – Melbourne passenger train was bound for Melbourne. At about 7.05 a.m. the “Southern Aurora” collided head-on with the Melbourne-Albury goods train near Violet Town. 8 people lost their lives in the crash and 117 were injured. Driver John Bowden had died of cardiac arrest at some time before the collision. The driver of the goods train, Lawrence Rosevear, a good friend and workmate of Jack Bowden had tried to apply the brake when he realised the Aurora was not slowing down, but was unable to stop the impact. Lawrence also died in the crash. A memorial is maintained at Violet Town to commemorate those who died and also recognised those who helped in the aftermath of the tragedy. This flag is connected to the "Southern Aurora" train tragedy in 1969A large blue flag bearing the gold insignia of Victorian Railways. Flag, Flag of St George for Seige Perilous
The flag was placed on an empty chair, the Siege Perilous, for Court Rituals. Siege Perilous - Arthurian legends Some legends also note a special chair at the Round Table, called the Siege Perilous, or 'Dangerous Chair'. Legend says that the seat could only be used by a knight who had a pure heart. A person with a pure heart was seen as someone who had committed no crimes or done any wrong. In the tale, anyone who sat in the chair but did not have a pure heart would die instantly. It was kept free by Merlin for the person who would one day find an object called the Holy Grail. This was a magical cup that was supposed to have been the one that Jesus drank out of during the Last Supper. In the story, this person was either Sir Galahad or Sir Percival, depending on what version of the story is told. https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_Table White flag with MOK symbols in centre of red cross and at each corner.methodist order of knights -

Photograph, Ron Grant, The Eltham Peace Group hanging the Hiroshima Day Banner on the Community Notice Board, Arthur Street, Eltham; Community Arts 1986 'As We Are' Banner Project Group, Hiroshima Day, 6 August 1986
Arthur Street, Eltham next to ANZ Bank The Hiroshima Day Banner was made by Jacky Talbot as part of the project. The women wanted to do something for Hiroshima Day and suggested that a workshop be set aside to make a banner. The artist was concerned about the remaining time scheduled for the project and spent several days "whipping" up the banner herself. For the artist this banner was to prove quite significant. The women hung it at the Community Notice Board on Hiroshima Day and were photographed by the local newspaper publicising the group and drawing wider community attention to the remembrance of the day. Although no new members joined the group from this activity, the artist felt that she was more fully accepted by the group afterwards. This banner has initiated a small group of women committed to peace. The artist has also continued to liaise and meet with the women as time permits. Future group plans include: making kimonos to wear when carrying the banner, participating in the Palm Sunday March, an observance of Hiroshima Day activity, which is yet to be decided, establishing contact with a sister-town in USA and USSR and supporting Eltham Council's stance as a Nuclear Free Zone.
