The cartoon was drawn by John Nathan, one of the final year students in the first class to graduate with the diploma of Licentiate of Optometric Science from the Australian College of Optometry. His father was Bertram Nathan who played important roles in obtaining registration of optometrists in 1934 and on the Council of the College. John was to become Director of Studies from 1950 to 1964 and President of the College from 1969 to 1978. He also paints in oils.This cartoon is significant to the Australian College of Optometry as a piece of memorabilia from the class of 1944. The souvenir programme was produced for the Fifth World Surfboard Riding Championships at Bells Beach, Victoria. The championships were the first international surfing contest held at Bells Beach. The finals of this event were held at Johanna Beach, also a first. The Myths and Monsters conference was something of a landmark in Australian mystery animal research. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. As of 2016 Tony Benson is the last Australian to win the 5000m at one of the major meets (now called Diamond League). That year Tony Benson was undefeated in Europe something no Australian has done since. He was also undefeated in the USA in early 1972 and probably would have medalled in Munich 1972 except for an incurring a hamstring injury 10 days before the race AND not being able to find the team medical doctors until some 16 hrs after the injury due to them being away from the village. Despite running with a torn hamstring Tony Benson broke Ron Clarke's Australian Olympic record for the 5000m but had no 'kick' and finished 7th in the heat. None of those who made the final had ever beaten Benson. Kip Keino and Tony Benson became friends. Keino received the first ever Olympic Laureate Award by the IOC at the Rio opening ceremony in 2016. The inscription "T L" on these early 20th century ladies button-up boots lead to the maker likely to be Tony Lama, a famous USA boot manufacturer, son of Italian immigrants. The "Rome" is the style of boot. The "6" is likely to be the soot size. Tony Lama began work at age 11 years in the leather trade industry, serving an apprenticeship as a shoemaker. He joined the US Cavalry when he was 16, after lying about his age, working as a cobbler to make boots for the soldiers. His workmanship became popular, particularly for the 'Western' style of boot. TONY LAMA boots In 1911 Lama established a company in Texas, first repairing boots, then adapting his shop to manufacture boots in order to meet the many orders he was receiving. He married and he and his wife Esther brought up six children who also went on to work in the family business. The business continued to grow through WWII. Part of the business included custom boot making and Tony's eldest son Joseph presented President Truman with a pair of kangaroo skin boots. The prosperous business became a company and eventually, in 1990, was sold to Justin Industries.This pair of boots is an example of women's footwear dating around the early 20th century. Pair of ladies leather button-up boots. Two-tone style: black bottom strong leather bottom and white, soft kid leather top. Boots have a curved fly fastened by 11 white buttons with metal shanks. Boots are constructed with cork filling. Inscriptions of both boots.
