The banner came back to Australia with Arthur COWLEY No 50704, RAAF. The Banner was removed from a Civic Hall by Paul RATCLIFFE of the British army, a cousin of Arthur Cowley. The card for the Civic Reception at Williamstown Town Hall for the ‘Back to Williamstown’ celebrations – the centenary from date of first settlement in 1834. It belonged to James and Kate Tyrrell, the paternal grandparents of the Donor. The donor is the third generation of her family to live in Williamstown. Having a photo of the Gardens in the reception card is evidence of the community pride of the Gardens. The photo is evidence of plantings in 1934 A folded sepia look card. The front has an embossed border, the City of Williamstown Shield, date in the right bottom corner and an inscription as described. The left fold inside demonstrates the reverse of the embossed border and details of the City of Williamstown and Councillors. Cr. W.D. Vaughan in 'Kew's Civic History' (1960) records that: "In connection with the Melbourne Centenary Celebrations in 1934, the Kew Council decided to organise a strong post as an appropriate gesture of welcome to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester. Also that the municipality be represented by a symbolic floral float in the Royal pageant. This was a striking entry and won first prize, and evoked much comment on account of its originality and truly Australian motif." Lane between Bamford's Timber Yard, corner Warrandyte Rd. and Maroondah Highway, and went to Melbourne St, later called Civic Place. Other buildings were Ham's Billiard Saloon, the two-story Renong Chambers, bottom left Jack Orr's clothes hoists and bottom right Horman & Woolhouse plumbers. All demolished for the building of Eastland in the 1960s. The photo shown is a typical example but may not be in the collection.

The State Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe visited the Shire of Eltham where they were entertained to a civic luncheon by the Shire President Cr. L. E. The earliest building on the Walpole Street site was the Kew Athenaeum Hall (built 1860) which was purchased by Kew Council in 1865. The Town Hall was sold to Woolworth's and subsequently demolished in 1972 when the civic offices were transferred to a new building on the corner of Charles Street and Cotham Road.This is the earliest known image of the old Kew Town Hall following the addition of the new facade in the 1880s.A print copy of a gelatin silver photograph of the former Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street, Kew.
