Rev William Butters (1810 - 1887). Born Hibbaldstone, Lincolnshire on 24 January 1810. Entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1833 and sent as a missionary to Van Dieman's Land. Worked with convicts at Port Arthur, then served at Hobart, Ross and Launceston. In 1850 he was appointed to Melbourne. His health failed during the unprecedented difficulties initiated by the discovery of gold in 1851. Appointed to Adelaide 1855 - 1862. returned to Victoria in 1862, but his health broke down completely and he returned to England in 1863 and became a supernumerary. A founder of the Wesleyan Mission Carlton. President of the Australasian Conference in 1858. Robert Anderson was one of the earliest settlers of Phillip Island. He built Glen Isla house in 1887 and travelled to Melbourne by ferry for his plumbing business. Christ Church is the main Anglican Church in Warrnambool. The Anglican Church held services in Warrnambool from 1847 on and a Sunday School operated from that time. The building of Christ Church was commenced in the early 1850s with the tower and spire added in the 1880s. The program under study here was for the annual concert of the Anglican Sunday Schools in Warrnambool. The concert featured items from Christ Church Sunday School and two other local Sunday Schools from St. George’s, East Warrnambool (established 1906 and now closed) and St. Peter’s, South Warrnambool (established 1911 and closed in 1974). This item, though ragged, is of interest as an example of the type of entertainment featured at Sunday School concerts in Warrnambool during the 20th century. At that time Sunday Schools would have been important as the children of the adherents of most Protestant religions in the city would have attended a Sunday School which provided religious instruction and some social activities. The program contains the names of those participating in the concert and these are useful to researchers. This is a piece of paper folded in two to make four pages, three with typed material. The pages are now completely detached and are a little torn and crumpled. It is a program of a mid 20th century Warrnambool Christ Church Sunday School concert. It has probably been produced by church officials as it is not a professional printing job. In 1887, land on the south east corner of Whitehorse Road and Richards Street, Mitcham was purchased and in 1888 a weatherboard church was erected. This early church was used until 1921, when the building was moved to a site in Mitcham Road, just north of Whitehorse Road. Sawbridgeworth, 32 Widford Street Glenroy, was built in 1887 by Arthur Wiseman to help promote the sale of land in Glenroy. It was St. Agnes Church of England Girls Home 1922 to 1964. This item belonged to Alan Richardson, a sawmiller at Tabbara. He helped to build and held a ticket for the paddle steamer "Curlip". He was a member of the Rechabites from March 3 1892. The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. It was named after Rechab, a leader in the Old Testament, who instructed his tribe to refrain from drinking alcohol. During the Industrial Revolution the idea of temperance became popular as damage was caused to families by alcohol. In Australia it was first established in Tasmania in the mid 1800s. In 1847 a branch was created in Victoria, and it then spread to other States. Members were provided with assistance during times of sickness, death and hardship. This item is associated with the Richardson family, early settlers in the Orbost district.A small grey book with a black spine. The title and details are in black print. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mr. James McCain Meek boasted of building the first house in Ballarat, on the corner of Dana and Lydiard Streets, which was also a lemonade store and some say a sly grog shop. Meek arrived in Australia in 1847. He was in Ballarat 1851-1853, and in later life he returned to Ballarat to live at the Benevolent Asylum. When he became very ill in 1898 his daughter Marianne Dallimore took him to live with her, and he died at her property near Warrnambool in 1899. He wrote these reminiscences for the AHRS, of which he was a member. He was an excellent penman and illustrator and he produced several extraordinary complicated works. Rev. Thomas Staines Brittingham Woodfull (1863 - 1941). Born Maldon in 1863, but grew up in Prahran and attended the Punt Rd Church. Qualified as a pharmacist. Worked as a local preacher before being ordained in 1887. Appointed to Sandhurst in 1887 before being sent as Conference Evangelist to Tasmania, where he conducted missions. Married Gertrude Lily Abey (1872 - 1941) in 1891. Returned to Victoria in 1893 and served at Kerang, Maldon, Shepparton, Flemington & Essendon, Collingwood, Bendigo, Albert Park, Brunswick, Box Hill. Retired in 1930. Was active in the campaign against the Collingwood tote. President of the Methodist Conference 1923. The Briggs family lived in Tawonga. Thomas assisted building the Tawonga to Bright road and drove cattle to the Bogong High Plains before marrying in 1887 and raising 7 children, 2 of whom, Ernest and Albert enlisted in WW1 in 1916.
