A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. The first manager was Mr Bert Frank and his wife was appointed Matron. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. A paper which was delivered to the Legacy in Victoria Conference in 1980, detailing Melbourne Legacy's involvement in housing the children of Legacy widows since 1942. By 1950 Melbourne Legacy administered four houses - Holmbush, Stanhope, Blamey House and Harelands - and cared for approximately 100 children. The houses were designed to be as homely as possible, and each one was largely autonomous. Children, many of whom came from country Victoria, would go to their own homes during school holidays and the Christmas season. The stated objectives were to 'pass out into the world young men and women with high ideals of citizenship, who are self-reliant and self-supporting.' Also 'to provide affection, security and a future goal and essential discipline.' The country Clubs and Groups would send provisions such as preserved fruit, cheese, eggs, honey, citrus fruit, butter, and potatoes throughout the year to support the residences. Numbers of residents declined during the 70s, and in 1975 a Residences Committee recommended that Blamey House and Harelands should be closed, leaving only Stanhope in operation, the first Blamey House having closed in 1955 with Holmbush being renamed the second Blamey House. By 1980 the only remaining house was Stanhope with an average occupancy of 20. See Cat. A letter dated 8th February 1943 from F H Adams of Factory Road Yarragon, to apply for the position of housemaster of the Legacy Hostel. He served for 12 years in the regular army and attained the rank of Captain. Serving part time in the V.D.C. as Battalion Commander. He mentions recent work on his brother-in-law's dairy farm while he was serving in the A.I.F. but now returned with injuries meaning the farm would be sold. His wife served as a nurse in WWI and is capable of teaching cooking, dressmaking and piano playing. They have one son currently 11 years old. A second letter dated 18 February 1943, from F.H. Adams thanking Legacy for the interview. Holmbush was the first children's home established by Melbourne Legacy. It was later renamed Blamey House when the first Blamey House was sold. Colour slide taken at Blamey House when it was in Balcombe Road, Beaumaris. The house and grounds were purchased for Legacy with a generous donation from the trustees of Blamey House Hostel (accommodation provided for servicemen in World War 2) after the hostel was closed. It was used by Legacy to provide home for young children in need. The boys classes and others appear to have used the pool at times. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. 00356.1 Letter dated 12 March 1943 from Cyril Smith to Doug N. Craig of the Holmbush Committee about Miss Helen Giovesi as a possible cleaner for the Legacy Club Hostel. Although it is on Commonwealth of Australia Repatriation Committee letterhead he has noted "Unofficial" and struck out his official title from the letter. 00356.2 Letter dated 14 April 1943 from Holmbush Committee to Miss Helen Giovesi confirming an arrangement for her and her sister Miss Rita to undertake the cooking and household duties at wages of £3 and £2.5 respectively. Slide photograph of the exterior of Harelands on a cloudy day from across Willesmere Road. Harelands was at 5 Willesmere Road on the corner with Burke Road. Harelands was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for education. Harelands generally looked after children up to the age of 14. Boys then moved to Blamey House and girls went to Stanhope. Harelands was built in the Queen Anne style and is now heritage listed. The slide is a second copy - as it has a red slide number printed on it. It appears to be part of a roll of slide film that also included photos of the outside of Blamey House. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves.
