The foundation stone for the Bendigo Gold District General Hospital in Lucan Street was laid in September, 1858, and the large sandstone building opened in January, 1859. In 1864, the two sandstone wings were added followed by the clock tower in 1866. In November, 1873, the Bowen Wing was opened. The hospital was incorporated in 1883. This is a programme for a ball and a supper conducted by the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society in 1937. The Western Caledonian Society was formed in Warrnambool in 1864 to promote and preserve Scottish culture in the region and in the 19th century ran many highland gatherings. The Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society still operates today.The programme indicates the Society was also active in the 20th century. The motto of the Society is that of the first Stuart King of Scotland. Reverend Alfred Madsen was a Methodist minister who was born in Maryborough in 1864 and died in 1930. He served in Ballarat and President and Secretary of the Primitive Methodist Conference before Union as well as Secretary of the United Methodist Church in 1916, and President of the Conference in 1917. This is a photograph of the site and the remains of the Lochton flour mill which was situated on a horse shoe bend along Deep Creek at Bulla. Captain William Morrison Hunter took up land along Deep Creek and built his home in 1850.He opened the flour mill in 1856, which was worked by a number of millers until it ceased operations in 1961.Flour milling was one of the early industries carried out in the Sunbury and Bulla district. From 1856 until 1931 the Smiths lived at 'Castlefield', a mansion on a vast estate that at one time stretched along South Road from Bluff Road to Hampton Street. Often used in car racing and piloting aeroplanes, the owner of this watch – Dr Harry Jenkins – was enthusiastically involved in both. Manufactured by Melbourne watchmaking company, T Gaunt & Co and was founded by Thomas Gaunt in 1856. All Saints Estate is a family-owned winery established in 1864 and located on the banks of the Murray River in Wahgunyah, Northeast Victoria. Original owners George Sutherland Smith, and John Banks, arrived from Caithness, Scotland in 1852. After being involved in a range of enterprises, they established the vineyard, including a castle based on the design of The Castle of Mey in Scotland, which was built in 1864. In 1873 in London, Sutherland Smith became the first Australian winemaker to win an award at an overseas wine show. Banks died in 1876 and All Saints remained in the hands of G. Sutherland Smith and his family, until after some variable fortunes in the late 1980s, it fell into the hands of a syndicate in 1989. After being passed in at a receiver’s auction in 1991, All Saints was acquired by Brown Brothers of Milawa in 1992. It is now owned and operated by the children of Peter R. Brown. During the early 1980s, All Saints took bulk orders for different corporations such as Ansett Air Freight, packaging them in jugs as this for special occasions or functions.This jug is representative of an historic and continuing leading Australian Winemaker located in Northeast Victoria.A pottery wine jug of tradition colours featuring a lower half of natural earthenware colour and a brown glazed top section. Following a Royal Commission in 1854, the building of a new Asylum at Kew began in 1864. It was built to replace the Yarra Bend Asylum on the Fairfield side of the Yarra River. Work started in 1864 and was completed in 1872 at a cost of ₤198,334. Operating over a period of 116 years, and often renamed to take account of public sensitivities, the ‘Kew Lunatic Asylum’ was one of the largest asylums built in Australia. ‘Willsmere’ was finally closed in December 1988 and sold by the Government of Victoria in the late 1980s. The photograph is by Charles Nettleton. He arrived in Victoria in 1854. In Melbourne he joined the studio of T. Duryea and Alexander McDonald and specialized in outdoor work. ... Nettleton opened his own studio in 1858. His souvenir albums were the first of the type to be offered to the public. However, when the dry-plate came into general use in 1885 he knew that the new process offered opportunities that were beyond his scope. Permewan Wright & Co Ltd were one of the biggest shipping agents on the Murray in the 2nd half of the 19th century. They were a cartage company established in 1856 in Geelong, who opened one of its twenty Victorian branches at Echuca in 1875. These two notebooks come from Christ Church in Warrnambool. One contains the cash transactions of the Christ Church wardens (Folio 78) with the National Bank of Australasia (1932-1938) and the other contains the financial transactions of the Christ Church Parochial Missionary Association, Warrnambool (1933-1940). The Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1856 with the addition of the nave in 1860 and the square tower in 1882. Photograph of a painting of Katherine Rose Beale (1795-1856), wife of Major Anthony Beale. The Beale family arrived in Port Phillip in 1839 and c.1841 established an estate named "St Helena" to the north of Melbourne. Katherine is buried in the St Katherine's Anglican Church Cemetery in Greensborough. This book, edited by Donald MacLeod, was given in 1883 as a prize to Annie Egerton by the Rev. W.H. Scott for Bible Knowledge. Annie Egerton was a pupil at the Allansford State School. John Jones was the Head Master at this school from 1867 to 1891. The school was opened in December 1856 as a National School and is still operating. No other details concerning Annie Egerton have been found.This book is of importance as it is a 19th century book given as a prize to a pupil of the Allansford School in 1883 for her Bible knowledge. It is particularly interesting that a prize for religious knowledge was given in the 1880s to a pupil at a secular State School. It is also interesting to note the type of book given to a primary school girl in the 19th century – a book with strong moral overtones and some heavy instructional articles. This is a hard cover book of 836 pages. It has a dark green and black cover patterned with an ornamental pattern and gold lettering contained within a square box on both the cover and the spine. The inside front and back pages have a mottled green flower pattern. The edges of the pages have a gilt finish. The book has a bookplate on the inside cover and the book contains an Index of Contents, short stories, articles on various topics and an Index of Authors. There are many black and white illustrations and sketches throughout the text. The first illustration has a piece of tissue paper in front of it. Specimen Cottage in Hargreaves Street Bendigo was built by stonemason James Brierley in 1856. He purchased the land at the first land sales in 1854. It is possibly the earliest building still standing in Bendigo. Redruth Gaol was constructed in 1856. It was the first South Australian gaol to be built outside Adelaide. The goal was built to house 30 prisoners (male and female). It closed in 1897 at which time the prisoners were transferred to Gladstone Gaol. The former Redruth Gaol was renovated and started a new life as a Girls' Reformatory in 1897 and closed in 1922. Fanny Swan (formerly Wood, nee Poole) came to Gippsland in the 1840s with her first husband, William Wood, where they became proprietors of the Shakespeare Hotel at Stratford. William Wood died in 1855, and in 1856 she married Samuel Swan. Together they acquired considerable property in and around Stratford. Samuel Swan died in 1880 at Stratford, and Fanny Swan died at Stratford in 1895.This illuminated address which documents the final payment for the Wesleyan Church building in 1892 has historic significance for Stratford Historical Society as it is located in the actual building. It also has social significance for the township as Mrs Fanny Swan was one of the earliest and best known business leaders in the area running the iconic Shakespeare hotel/boarding house for many years. It has aesthetic significance as an example of a illuminated address produced on a printing press with gold ink, rather than the usual handwritten form. It is press-printed in gold ink on what appears to be a blank, pre-printed poster. It reads: Stratford, 2 January 1892 Mrs S. The Tower Hill Cemetery is located near Koroit on the north side of the Princes Highway The, between Port Fairy and Warrnambool. The first burial at Tower Hill Cemetery took place in 1856. Over 150 years there has been over 8,000 burials. Around 45 percent of the burials are in unmarked graves. Skittles was a game of European origin maybe as early as the 4th or 5th century and became popular in England in the 14th century. Many Bendigo hotels included Skittle Alley's and some early mentions of these include Epsom in 1856. Teams could even play for monetary prizes. Although generally considered an indoor game, skittles also made appearances at outings such as picnics and race meetings.2 Wooden skittles with knob at the top. This is a Victorian Municipal Directory for 1945, containing general information on all municipalities in Victoria, a Gazeteer, a Commonwealth Guide and a Water Supply Record. Municipal Directories were published annually in Victoria from 1867 on. This directory came from the Shire of Mortlake which was established in 1864 when it had an area of 2137 square kilometres. The Shire of Mortlake was abolished in 1994 and merged with other neighbouring shires to form the present day Shire of Moyne. This book is very useful to researchers as it contains much information on the City, Borough and Shire structures, the Council employees and Government employees of all the municipalities. It has, therefore, important local information on Warrnambool and the surrounding areas in 1945. This is a soft cover book of 1114 pages. It has a buff- coloured cover with red binding on the spine. The printed material on the covers is printed in black. It has a blue stamp of the Shire of Mortlake on several pages. Margaret Ellen Holloway was born in 1864 at Indigo via Rutherglen. She married William Hugh Hooke in 1892. Their children were : Allan b 1893, Ida Mary b 1895, Normal b 1896 KIA 1916 WW1, Maxwell b 1902 and Violet b 1904. The orchard that Margaret is photographed in is the family orchard and farm belonging to relatives being the Mills and Holloway families. The orchard was south of Barnawartha. The Government first granted land for the building of a Presbyterian Church in Sunbury in Stawell Street and Barkly Street, in 1864 and a smaller building was later erected on the site.
