Martha Pinkerton and her brother Frank Pinkerton were longstanding supporters of the Ballarat School of Mines and its students. Following their deaths in the 1930s, the School became the recipient of two important bequests that were to lead to the establishment in perpetuity of the following student scholarships: firstly, the Frank Pinkerton scholarship valued at £30 per annum for three years and free tuition in architecture, metallurgy, applied chemistry, mining, electrical, mechanical or civil engineering-and secondly, the Martha K. Pinkerton art scholarship of the same value, 'for talented and deserving students from the City and District of Ballarat'. In the early 1930's Martha, who was a past student at the SMB Art and Technical School, began to give a succession of practical donations to the institution which commenced during the Depression years. Jack Lang was a former NSW ALP state treasurer and was elected Premier on two occasions. His government was dismissed in his second term of government by the State Governor due to his defying the Commonwealth Government's financial agreements' legislation. Sir Philip Game was the State Governor who dismissed Lang. The author of this book is the daughter of the secretary to the Philip Game. Unlike Sir John Kerr (who dismissed Prime Minister Whitlam in 1975), Game expressed some uncertainty about whether his decision to sack Lang's government was sound: "In spite of the popular endorsement of my assassin's stroke, I am still wondering if I did right. I still believe that Lang has a great deal of right on his side, that a lot of what he advocates will have come to pass, and that the extremists on the other side are a greater danger than extreme Labour." The Warrnambool RVIB Auxiliary was believed to be formed in 1936. This collection includes an article showing the strength and determination of auxiliaries dated March 1940 ' Blind Institute Annual Meeting' - "If this war was only going for six months, I would say to all our workers- Down Tools- and give your efforts solely to war purposes. But this war is more likely to last six years in my opinion, than six months. It is not right to rob Peter to pay Paul, especially where Peter is a frail little fellow," said Mr. Van Assche, of the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind, when appealing at the annual meeting of the Warrnambool Auxiliary yesterday afternoon for a continuance of support to the institution as far as the altered circumstances would permit. "The war had changed the whole aspect of the bright financial outlook of the institution," he said.
