Cats Mascot Sketch, Lloyd Hagger Cat Mascot Sketch, 1925
As one of Geelong's finest forwards, Lloyd Hagger was relatively tall and possessed the ability to take high-flying, spectacular finger-tip marks at chest height as he tumbled over packs. His accurate punt and drop kicks resulted in many goals for the team. He became well known for scoring many acute angle goals. A mobile performer who could kick effectively with either foot, he played with equal effectiveness at centre half-forward and full forward. His durability was remarkable. During his 12 seasons he only missed eight matches. He was never short of a word on the field. - Col Hutchinson GFC HistorianHand drawing on paper card. Functional object - Ship's Wheel from S S George Kermode, 1914
The Melbourne Harbour Trust Commission purchased the steam dredge SIR WILLIAM MATHEWS on 10 October 1941 from the Western Australian Government. Although the dredge was described as a suction dredge it was in fact a bucket dredge. After an overhaul, the vessel was renamed the GEORGE KERMODE and commenced operation in Victorian waters on 22 June 1942. The vessel was hired out to the Port of Burnie in 1945-46 but continued in the ownership of the Trust until 1 April 1976 when it was scuttled by the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands as part of their artificial reef program. This program resulted in a number of reefs being established in Port Phillip Bay, including one off Carrum containing the wooden steamer URALBA.Timber and brass ship's wheel from center ladder hopper dredge George Kermode (formerly Sir William Mathews). Document - Forests Commission of Victoria Northern Area Fire Protection Policy, Statement, Future Bush Fire Policy, Plan for Fire Control, 1938-1939
Fanned by powerful winds, the Black Friday fires (13 January 1939) swept rapidly across large areas of Victoria, causing widespread destruction. Flames leaped large distances, and giant trees were blown out of the ground by fierce winds. Large pieces of burning bark (embers) were carried for kilometres, starting new fires in places that had not previously been affected by flames. Almost two million hectares burned across the state. Large areas of state forest, containing giant stands of Mountain Ash and other valuable timbers, were destroyed. As a result, approximately 575,000 hectares of reserved forest and 780,000 hectares of Crown land burned.Four Files Forests Commission of Victoria Northern Area Report on the 1938-39 Fire Season; and the Fire Protection Policy in Respect of Field activities Prior to the Incidence of the 1939 Fires. history, bendigo, forests commision of victoria, 1939 bush fires -

Taxidermy Sheep, Sir Lindsay, c1980
The Saxon Merino, as can be seen with Sir Lindsay, is physically the smallest of the Merino strains, cutting the lowest weight of wool (3-6kg); however, the Saxon Merino is without peer in the quality of fine wool produced (14 to 18 microns). This wool is prized by the textile industry, producing the highest quality cloth resulting in strong financial returns. The Saxon Merino was first imported into Australia by Eliza Forlonge. She and her family didn’t even live in Australia when she travelled to Germany to select prime Saxon sheep in preparation for her move to Tasmania in 1830. In doing so she played a fundamental role in developing Australia’s fine-wool industry.A Saxon Merino stud. Small size body and short legs with white fleece. Work on paper - Photograph, Mont Albert Central School Senior Team, December 1927, 1927
Mont Albert was one of a number of local government schools which provided both primary and some secondary education. The term Central School was quite common in Melbourne from at least the 1920's and was used to refer to a school that went up to year 8 or form 2. The reference to the C.S.A. Sports probably refers to the Central Schools Association, or perhaps a shortening of C.S.S.A. (Central Schools Sports Association). A later over-arching association was known as the V.P.S.S.A. (Victorian Primary School Sports Association - now School Sport Victoria.) Mont Albert was frequently mentioned in articles about or results of sporting tournaments, particularly in the Box Hill Reporter.Black and white head and shoulders photo of 10 girls in a uniform of white blouses and a dark tunic. Souvenir - Tallangatta - Hume Weir Tiepin, 1980s
A wide range of items have been created as souvenirs to represent the Hume Weir on the Murray River. Work on Hume Dam started in 1919 and took 17 years to complete. Souvenir items have included chinaware, ashtrays, placemats and small jewellery items such as this tie pin. This tie pin was created as a souvenir for the town of Tallangatta. In the 1950s, the height of the Hume Weir wall was increased, resulting in a nine metre rise in the level of the water in Lake Hume. This necessitated the moving of most of the town of Old Tallangatta due to flooding. The transfer of the township by the State Rivers and Waters Supply Commission to a new site approximately 8 kilometres to the west was completed on 29 June 1956.This item is representative of many items commemorating the Hume Weir and the township of Tallangatta.A small metal and enamelled oval tie pin. Coin - Token, Bateman token, 1855
This coin is a Warrnambool Bateman penny. It is an example of an Australian token – a coin that had the value of a penny and was produced by businessmen in the 1850s to be used only in the business of the person named on the coin. There were two firms in Warrnambool that produced tokens in the 1850s – William Jamieson, a general storekeeper and William Bateman. The latter had a general store in Banyan Street and became in the early 1850s one of the largest merchant firms in the Warrnambool district. But the firm’s liabilities were financed by overdrafts and insolvency resulted. A disastrous and suspicious fire in 1856 destroyed the Bateman store and caused a great number of insolvencies in the district as so many businessmen and farmers were financed by Bateman who eventually left the district. This token is of supreme importance. It is significant for three reasons: 1. It is an example of an 1850s Australian token, demonstrating an early business practice in our history. 2. It is an example of a Warrnambool token produced by an important Warrnambool business (only two firms in Warrnambool produced tokens) 3. It is a Bateman token and these are comparatively rare because many Bateman tokens were destroyed in the 1856 fire. This is an 1855 metal token with, on one side, an image of a woman holding scales in one hand and a cornucopia in the other (Dea Pecunia?). The obverse side has the name of William Bateman Junior of Warrnambool. It is a business token which could be used only in the Bateman store in Warrnambool in place of a penny. One side: Woman image and the word ‘Australia’ Obverse side: ‘William Bateman Junr. & Co., Importers and General Merchants, Warnambool (sic), Victoria, 1855’ william bateman junior, warrnambool tokens, bateman token, coin tokens -

Plate, Saucer, Early 20th century
This saucer came from the Warrnambool Congregational Church and was probably part of a set of crockery used by the church members at social gatherings. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 when Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler conducted a meeting in Warrnambool to consider the possibility of forming a local Independent church. The first minister was William Pentland and the first church was in Liebig Street. A notable member of the Congregational Church was Samuel Nettleton who was the Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. In 1940 a new church was opened in Henna Street. In 1973 there was a merger of the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church, resulting in the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977. In 1976 the former Congregational Church in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This saucer is of interest as a memento of the former Congregational Church in Warrnambool. It comes from the early 20th century days when the church would have had a strong following in the city. This is a cream-coloured saucer with double gold edging around the outer rim. The lettering in the middle of the saucer is black and white. The inside of the saucer is much stained. ‘Warrnambool Congregational Church’warrnambool congregational church, history of warrnambool -

Film - Video, Michelangelo Antonioni, Chung Kuo - Cina by Michelangelo Antoniolo, 1972
A documentary on China, concentrating mainly on the faces of the people, filmed in the areas they were allowed to visit. The 220 minute version consists of three parts. The first part, taken around Beijing, includes a cotton factory, older sections of the city, and a clinic where a Cesarean operation is performed, using acupuncture. In 1972, during Mao's Cultural Revolution, Michelangelo Antonioni was invited by the People's Republic of China to direct a documentary about New China. The result was a three-and-a-half-hour long film, divided into three parts. Mao disliked it so much that Michelangelo Antonioni was consequently charged with being anti-Chinese as well as counterrevolutionary. The movie was finally shown at Beijing's Cinema Institute 30 years later. The boxed video reels containt .1 - Reel One in black National Video Tape box .2 - Reel Two in black National Video Tape boxchung kuo - cina, michelangelo antonioli, video, video reel -

Book - Non Fiction History, Honour Roll - South Africa 1899 - 1902 Albury-Wodonga and District Residents Who Served In The Boer War, reprinted 03/2008
Historical information of soldiers from the Albury-Wodonga district who fought in the Boer War in South Africa 1899 - 1902. In 1996 the then curator for the 8/13 VMR Museum, the Hon Colonel John Neale, commissioned the author to research a group of returned servicemen and women from the Boer War and had lived within 100 km radius of the Albury/Wodonga townships. The Boer War was the second war in South Africa and was the result of heavy taxes and non voting rights of the local white Boer population. Colonial forces including the Australian Light Horse contingent where called upon by England to overthrow the rebellion. This War was the first engagement of Australian troops fighting on foreign soil. This Honour Roll details the pay rates, the battle highlights, weapons used and maps covering the first Australian contingent of soldiers who fought in the Transvaal (Boer War).. Listed are the names of those soldiers who lived within 100klms of Albury and Wodonga. The soldiers are listed by Location, Rank, Initial,Name and Unit. The significance of both the War and those who served in it is two fold. Firstly it demonstrates that the tie between the Colonial outreaches of England's Empire to "the Motherland" were extremely strong at this point in time. This union remained strong up until the middle of World War II when England could not help Australia to defend itself against possible invasion by Japan. The alliance between Australia and the United States of America replaced the British/Australian pact. Secondly the attitude of, and the high degree of horsemanship of those from the Albury and Wodonga area. The degree of adaptability, by these servicemen, to suit the environment in which they fought provided the first real insight into the Australian psyche "of those living and surviving on the harsh Australian outback"This book has a bright red soft cover and is bound with bright yellow tape. Book, Dennington Cricket Club 1937-2007, 2008
This book gives details of the history of the Dennington Cricket Club from 1937 to 2007. Malcolm Kelson compiled the statistical batting and bowling details for each year and provided a summary of each year’s performance, including the results of every A Grade/Division One game played. The history of the Cricket Club and the personal profiles of long-serving club members were compiled by David Kelson. From 1937 to 1939 the Dennington Cricket Club competed in the Warrnambool Cricket Association competition. During World War Two the Dennington club was in recess and was re-formed in 1946. Today the club continues to play in the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition. The W.D.C.A. has 13 competing teams across three divisions. This book is of considerable interest as it contains the history of the Dennington Cricket Club, one of the important sporting clubs in Dennington, five kilometres north west of the Warrnambool Central Business District. This is a soft cover book of 202 pages. The front cover has a white background with a black and white photograph of the Dennington Cricket Ovals in 1968. Bemm River is a small township in East Gippsland. There have been several Bemm River hotels since 1891 when the first Hotel was built by Henry Summer. This Hotel was located near a ford where traffic crossed the river. Annie Morgan was the next person to have a roadside licence to sell liquor at Bemm River, also known as Sydenham Inlet Hotel. In 1927, a hotel was built on the present site at Bemm River, again with the Morgan family. Like many hotels, the Bemm River hotel has burned down or suffered damage through fires and was rebuilt. These photos are likely of a fire at the Hotel in 1994 which resulted in the hotel burning down. Drench Gun
The Kettle Drum Drenching Gun was invented and predominately used in the 1940s and 1950s. The Drench Gun was likely used to drench sheep with carbon tetrachloride for internal parasite control. These guns were widely used in Australia. There were problems with the design of the kettle Drum Drench Gun, however, which contributed to its demise. On hot days and/or if the sheep struggled while being drenched, some fluid would miss its intended target and go into the windpipe and onto the lungs of sheep, often with fatal results. At times nearly one-third of a flock could be found dead. Inexperienced operators, overdoses and weather were often blamed for the deaths when it was often the design of the Drench Gun itself. Minutes of meetings of Building Committee, 29 October 1886-15 May 1889
The 1889 London Dock Strike grew from unrest about poor living conditions as a result of the casualised labour force. Money raised in Australia (30,000 pounds) helped to support striking workers to continue the action and feed their families. The strike led to the formation of the General Labourers' Union and strengthened unionism amongst dockers. The 1890 Maritime Strike: marine officers walked out because shipowners would not negotiate terms and conditions of employment whilst the Mercantile Marine Officers' Association was affiliated with the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Union officials proposed to disaffiliate on the condition that employers would agree to meet and reach a compromise with union delegates. The shipowners refusal to meet triggered strike action. The London Dock Labourer's Strike correlates with significant National growth in the trade union movement. The Maritime Strike demonstrates an historical example of an employer's attempt to undermine workplace unionism. Parallels (i.e. employers attempting to weaken union power) have been drawn between this and the Australian waterfront dispute of 1998.Bound, paper, 1 volumebuilding committee, maritime strike, mercantile marine officers' association, general labourers' union, london dock strike, casualisation, strikes, unions, ballarat trades hall -

Cloisonne - Vase
Purchased by Mr. & Mrs. H. N. Lord in 1970. Cloisonné, a French word meaning "enclosed", is a metal-working technique. It is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments or cells to the metal object. This is done by soldering or sticking silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on edge. These are visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments. Coloured enamel is the usual filling for the cells. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then is fired in a kiln. In older times inlays of cut gemstones were often used. They were decorated with geometric or schematic designs, with thick cloison walls. Photograph, Emu Bottom
The fountain in the image is at the entrance to the 'Emu Bottom' homestead. George Evans squatted on land to graze sheep, along the Jacksons Creek Valley, originally known as Buttlejork Valley, in 1836 and built the homestead from local Silurian sandstone and timber. Over the years it has had a number of owners. In the 1920s the property was renamed 'Holly Green' by H.L Webb after a property in Narre Warren. In the 1950s it was renamed 'Emu Bottom'. Over the years a number of fires have destroyed parts of the building and as a result, little of the original building remains. The fountain was erected in 1936 to mark the centenary of the property as well as 100 years of European settlement in theSunbury area. The property is now a private residence and function centre.'Emu Bottom' is one of the oldest homesteads in Victoria.A small non-digital sepia photograph with a cream border of a fountain, with a horse trough around the base, at the entrance of a rural property.'emu bottom', holly green, sunbury, jacksons creek, buttlejork valley, george evans
