Arrival on the RMS Maloja Two photographs are missing.Pre Great Depression, 1928 was a difficult year in Melbourne and also for the Mission. Ships were rare on the wharfs meaning seamen were also rare in the missions. However they started the fundraising for the extension of the 1888 Port Melbourne building which was becoming too small. At the end of the year, Reverend Weller announced he was appointed assistant in London. He and his wife Alexina left in January 1929 after five years. The bottom stone was the foundation stone for the main building laid Tuesday 5 February 1907, and the middle stone was the foundation stone for the chapel, laid Tuesday 1 December 1908. The two stones were inserted on the wall of the current Mission building probably when the Siddeley Street institute was demolished. Built in 1888, the building at Port Melbourne was in need of renovation. In February 1929 a fundraising was organised by the Box Hill branch of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild: "The Mayoress of Box Hill (Mrs. C. Palling) opened a very successful Australian tea, held on Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter's Parish Hall, by members of the Box Hill branch of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, to raise funds towards the cost of renovating the Port Melbourne Seamen's institute. The building is in a very dilapidated condition, and is totally inadequate for the extensive requirements of the Mission to Seamen." "Additional buildings at the Seamen's Institute, conducted by the Victoria Missions to Seamen, at Port Melbourne, were officially opened and dedicated yesterday (23 January 1930) by Archbishop Head. Each volume provides us with extensive listings of correspondence with supporters, fundraisers, patrons, architects, Mission staff and business transactions carried out by the Honorary Secretary Mr WHC Darvall over the period of a decade. Queen Victoria, Governors of Victoria: Earl of Hopetoun, Lord Brassey, Sir George Sydenham Clark, Lord Talbot and Governors General: Baron Northcote, performers such as Nellie Melba, Kitty Grindley, Sir Samuel Gllott president of the Law Institute, Hugh Reid, Crawford Pasco R.N. FRGS are just a few. The late 19th C - early 20th C period covered by the 2 vol collection of correspondence records together with annual reports and minutes documents a significant transition period not only across centuries but also towards a new framework of operations for the original mid 19th C founded Mission to seamen. The death of a long-standing Chaplain, Wesleyan, Ebenezer James in 1901 eventually led to a proposed merger in 1905 which resulted in the amalgamation of the Victorian Mission with the Anglican based Mission to Seafarers under the leadership of Rev'd Gurney Goldsmith who arrived in 1905. The new Mission was launched in 1906 with a long planned and much needed new central building opened in 1907 on the Australian Wharf. Mr Darvall, in his time produced a handwritten 40 page epitomised history, drawn from annual reports and was exceptionally meticulous in his efforts to cross reference related correspondence, press clippings, report material and documents. The Brasseys visited Australia in winter 1887. Lady Annie Brassey mentions the Williamstown and Port Melbourne Sailors' Rest and Seamen's meeting. See p. 292 (18 June 1887)Lady Brassey and her husband Lord Thomas Brassey donated the proceeds of the Sunbeam visitation in Williamstown to the Sailor's Rest (£63). They also presented the Port Melbourne Sailors' Rest with a cheque of £50 as a contribution to the new building fund. Lady Brassey died of malaria at the end of their voyage and was buried at sea. Lord Brassey also donated £10 every year to the Seamen's Mission. Lady Brassey was remembered during the opening of the new building in Port Melbourne in February 1889. A portrait of her was dedicated in November the same year. The collection of photo albums is held in the Huntington Library in California. The lists describing each album are attached in the media. Furniture - Sanctuary chairs, pair, Gladys Hawkey (1886-1974), c. 1917
William Scott Purves Godfrey (1872-1953) designed the chairs and Miss Gladys Hawkey (1886-1974) carved them. W.S.P Godfrey was born in Toorak on 6 April 1872. He was was the cousin of Ethel Godfrey. Educated in Brussels and at Melbourne Grammar, he studied Architecture at the University of Melbourne. He and Henry Howard Spowers established the architectural firm Godfrey & Spowers, known for the design of the Argus building, around 1901. W S P Godfrey retired from practice in 1944. He died in August 1953, aged 81. He's buired in the St Kilda Cemetery with the Godfrey family. Gladys Hawkey was a member of the Guild. (photographed during the Norla Fete). She was born in Sandhurst, Bendigo and is buired in the Bendigo Cemetery. Little is known about Gladys Hawkey. She may have been a student of Robert Prenzel. Another mention of her work is made in an article in 1915 where her escritoire is offered in a raffle to raise funds for the Australian sick and Wounded. The chairs were donated in 1919 when the Flinders Street mission was open. In a style of Robert Prenzel with Australian Flora, the chairs are in the typical Arts and Crafts style. Model ship, Cutty Stark
The last remaining and most famous of all the clipper ships, Cutty Stark, is today preserved for posterity in a dry dock in Greenwich, UK. Launched in November 1869 at Dumbarton on Clyde she was considered the fastest ship of the day. Designed and constructed by Hercules Linton and William D Scott, she was built to carry tea from China and beat the Thermopylae. Her fastest recorded speed was 12.5 knots by sailing 363 miles in 24 hours. The dimensions of both ships were very similar: length 64.7m (212 feet), Beam 11 =m (36 feet), Depth of hold 6.4m (21 feet). Tonnage: Cutty Stark: 921, Thermopyalae 948. With many centuries of shipbuilding it was difficult to find good oak in England. The oak frames occupied excessive space in the cargo hold. A composite building technique was sued with the hull being made out of wooded panelled iron frames. Cutty stark was built with an elm keel and teak planking. In 1936, the old Port Melbourne building dating from 1888 was too small and not longer suitable for the purpose of the mission. So architects were asked to design a new building. Harry Morris 's project was chosen.Louis Reginald Williams (1890–1980) was s sought after ecclesiastical architect in Australia. He designed churches throughout the country, particularly in Victoria. The Anglican Church was his major client but he also Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans and Christian Scientists churches. This photograph taken by the Australasian, depicts the central Institute in September 1917. It was published on the 15th of September 1917 along with other photographs taken during the dedication of the St Peter chapel on the 6th of September. The photograph was also used in a Jottings mentioning "Courtesy of the Australasian".This is one of the first photographs of the Mission's building opened in 1917 before the Norla Dome was erected in 1920. Furniture - Dining Chairs, 6, 1920-1930
This set of six original chairs (2 armchairs + 4 chairs) along with the dining table was originally used in the dining room of the Manse, the chaplains' residence. Upon completion of the Institute building in 1917, the Goldsmiths moved in after living for many uncomplaining years in a flat on Australia Wharf, which had “many disadvantages and discomforts”. It was photographed in the Manse dining room by the reverend or Mrs Weller c. 1926.It is not known when they were purchased or gifted. But they are likely originating from Europe. Reverend Weller photographed the dining suite during his stay betwenn 1926-1929 (see item 1568).Wooden oakwood dining chairs with two heart-shaped carvings on the backrest. Plaque - Memorial plaque, P.J. King, Memorial Chapel of Saint Peter, 1917
The Chapel of Saint Peter was dedicated on September 6, 1917 by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne. The total sum necessary for the construction of the chapel was collected by the L.H.L.G and the chapel stands as a tribute to the honoured memory of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine who lost their lives in the Great War. Note that the building was erected to commemorate fallen Mercantile Marines in the Great War before the war was concluded. This shows that the war and death toll thus far was significant enough at this point that it was having a serious impact on Australian society. Flyer - The Elephant Room, 1988
Louise Hearman used the Norla Dome and painted a mural which had taken her around a year to complete. The exhibition called Elephant Room was shown from May 1988. The work was vandalised in June 1989 and subsequently demolished.Louise Hearman is a Melbourne born artist and Archibald Prize winner. Hearman first came to public notice in 1987/88 when she spent a year painting the mural in the Norla Dome. Melbourne artist Louise Hearman in the domed gymnasium of the Mission to Seamen - Picture: ROSS DUNCAN THE dilapidated pool halls of Melbourne’s Mission to Seamen are an unlikely setting for a budding Michelangelo. But when Louise Hearman came across the one-time mission gymnasium she could not resist the urge to create a fresco. It did, however, take a little persuading for the Anglican Church, which still owns and operates a mission in the 61-year-old building, to agreee to house a minor Sistine Chapel on their premises. A year of labour later, Hearman has had no complaints about the great swirling sky or huge oil paintings which now adorn the empty 11-sided room. Instead she is constantly visited by old sailors and passers-by who are thrilled to discover the unusual architecture and artwork. “When peoiple come here it’s a real discovery. It’s something they find for themselves,” she said. Her pictures are neither religious nor symbolic, merely outpourings to create an atmosphere. “THere are lots of things I’d like to say but I’m not saying them in my paintings. “There are no messages, they don’t have any political statement. Life was a little more comfortable for Hearman than her renaissance predecessors. After struggling with cumbersome scaffolding to reach her “canvas” she discovered the modern wonders of the scissor lift. She does not look on the work as a huge achievement. However, it may all be for nought. They agree. But neither knew what it was going to lead to. When Hearman saw ‘the Elephant Room’ at the mission, a big domed room, she felt she “just had to do something with it”. She applied for and was granted a $3250 grant from the Australia Council, with which she was able to buy the necessary scaffold and paint, and then set about transforming the room. Now, a year later, her masterpiece is complete. Hearman emphasised the the mural doesn’t represent “heaven and hell”. Rather, she said, “people should make their own interpretations”. She said it was “not particularly heaven and hell, it’s not particularly anything”. And there is “no narrative” to the mural. It “just developed with the building”, out of whatever images and feeling Hearman had at the time. Australian National Line (ANL) began operations on 1 January 1957. It operated the largest fleet in coastal trade, ran passenger ships such as Princess of Tasmania and Empress of Australia that became household names, and from 1969 carried the Australian flag into international trades. ANL was at the forefront of innovation in bulkships, RoRo vessels and containerization, also in the redesign of ports and terminals. Many of its 110 ships were built in Australia. THE HOME OF THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS By 1907 the Mission to Seafarers Victoria had moved from providing its services aboard a floating vessel, the Emily, to three different bases in Melbourne locations: Williamstown, Port Melbourne and the North Bank of the Yarra - opening a central home in 1907, and finally at 717 Flinders Street in 1917. The Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex, includes the landmark domed gymnasium, which opened in 1920. The State heritage listed buildings of the Mission are considered architecturally significant urban examples of two distinct architectural styles: the external Spanish Mission Revival and the Arts and Crafts influence of the interior. This window, titled ‘Missions to Seamen’, was installed in 1980 and depicts a cargo ship, tug and lighthouse representing the working seaman, and is further supported by the Flying Angel emblem of the Mission to Seafarers ministry.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June-July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIAL EVENTS The Ladies of the Harbour Lights Guild played a central role in everyday functions of the Mission to Seafarers. Concerts and social events were held nightly all the year round, as were special events on Cup Day, the King and Queen’s Birthdays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve. Ladies of the Guild and other friends of the Mission contributed greatly to the organisation of such occasions, which provided great comfort to seafarers so far removed from home and their loved ones. As one seafarer remarked: “Ah miss, it is not so much the concerts and picnics that does us men so good, but that you ladies will come and talk to us”. This window, titled ‘Hope’, was installed in 1933 in memoriam of one of the founders and long- standing members of the Guild, Miss Alice Tracey, who passed away in 1932. The movie was filmed in 1940: "Old 16mm vacation films were discovered at a garage sale in San Jose, California by Tim Peddy and digitally converted courtesy of The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County. The unknown photographer traveled throughout 1940's Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. All Rights Reserved." He maintained the Beacon Light on Woolamai Point close to his house.
