Country Women's Association of Victoria was a popular widely known organisation throughout Australia. Early settlers came to Dederang from Kergunyah. The main road, Dederang to Tawonga was opened about 1860 - 1864, connecting 'Crosthwaite's Gap' with 'Smith's corner'. Red Cross, CWA, Bowling Club histories in Tawonga and Mt Beauty written for a book, title unknown.The histories of the Red Cross, the Country Women's Association and the bowling clubs in the towns of Tawonga and Mt Beauty are important as the communities in the Kiewa Valley were involved in these organisations for many years from the mid 1940's and in the case of the Tawonga bowling club since 1953. Established in 1946, during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, the township of Mt Beauty was developed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to provide additional accommodation for the thousands of workers during the construction of the country’s second largest hydro-electricity scheme. 
Although these towns were built as temporary accommodation for the workers and their families, many stayed after the scheme finished. Combined with the influx of European migrants, with their rich cultural backgrounds, all played a major part in shaping the future character of the Mount Beauty, the Kiewa Valley and Falls Creek. The Bright Council, now the Alpine Shire took over the control of the township in 1960. This relatively young town of Mount Beauty, along with the surrounding townships of Falls Creek, Bogong, Tawonga South and Tawonga, are all part of a prospering tourist area with excellent services, accommodation, food and a wide range of recreational activities available for all ages. According to Shire records, the population of Mt Beauty has grown from 1,500 in 1981 to 1,800 in 2016 with a projected increase to 2,000 in 2013The photographs taken around 1993 show a prosperous commercial centre catering for both locals and the needs of visitors. In 1940 Field Headquarters for the Kiewa Scheme were established at Bogong with office, workshop facilities and accommodation for workmen, staff and some families constructed. (There had been a 'tent camp' on this site in 1939 but was destroyed by bush fires) Construction of accommodation continued until 1947. A total of 40 houses plus a hostel for single staff, post office, police station, medical centre and primary school all with water and sewerage and electricity supply. The staff hostel was known as Kiewa House and is now occupied by the Education Department. Lake Guy was named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident Engineer in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa area. He held this position from 1939 to November 1946 when he was transferred to Head Office. The Bogong Township was developed firstly as an accommodation centre (base camp) for construction workers employed under the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. Due to the influx of European workers into the Township the beautification of the immediate surrounds (gardens etc.) had a distinct European flavour. This environment has been very beneficial for tourism in later years. At the completion of the scheme, in the 1960's, the village was opened to public/tourism use. Strict environmental control has not allowed for any extensive redevelopment in tourist accommodation and basically restricted it to the accommodation initially built for the construction workers. Activities such a bike riding, snow skiing, restricted horse riding and bush walking on the Alpine plains and mountains are now a viable part of the Kiewa Valley Tourist Industry. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria supplied First Aid Kits to its employees and 'ran' an ambulance during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES). The KHES was constructed at the upper end of the Kiewa Valley in the Victorian mountains on the Bogong High Plains. This area is remote with difficult terrain requiring people working and enjoying recreational activities to carry a first aid kit in case of emergency. This First Aid kit is light and portable enabling the user to 'fix' minor injuries and wait for access to medical assistance.This portable first aid kit was owned by a local Mt Beauty resident, Allan S. Clarke who was a long term staff employee for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.First Aid Outfit (Kit), No.20 by "Sanax". Township of Bright celebrated its centenary during the week from 10th - 18th March, 1962. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Their public relations employees published booklets to promote the Scheme and the area. In this booklet there are photos of some of the major work constructions with an explanation of how they work and their purpose, a map of the Scheme and an article and photos of tourist facilities and activities that are available.This booklet promotes the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and tourism indicating that tourism was recognised as a new industry for the area. The Tawonga branch of the C.W.A. commenced on the 7th Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country.Women living in Tawonga were mostly on farms and, in 1946, when the branch commenced would have been feeling more remote with WW11 having had an effect of available workers and the well being of the women and children. During WW2 there were volunteers all over Australia observing air activity every night. This photo was taken from the S.E.C.V. hut dedicated to this activity and was manned by men and women throughout the war. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria were based at Bogong when constructing the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria dedicated a hut at Bogong township during World War 2 for the purpose of volunteers manning the hut to observe air craft. This booklet is the 98th Annual Report (1952) for the Warrnambool & District Base Hospital. The Warrnambool Hospital was established in 1854 and was then also a Benevolent Asylum for elderly people. In 1952 the centre for elderly people was at Alveston in Cramer Street, Warrnambool and was part of the services of the Warrnambool Hospital. This booklet is of interest as it is an annual report for the Warrnambool Hospital (1952) and will be useful for researchers. This is a booklet of 25 pages. On Saturday September 2, 2023, Russell Yeoman led a group of 22 society members and interested others on a walk following trhe bounadries of the original Shillingalw farm. Commencing at the corner of Panther Place and Library Place, we proceeded up to Shillinglaw Cafe then the Shillinglaw trees at the former Eltham Shire Office site then along Main Road to the fire station then throughh St Laurence Lane and uinder the railway line , along Diamond Street then return via the Diamond Creek trail behind Andrew Park. The actual farm boundary went past the creek and further up the hill. The original farm comprised lot 90 of Holloway’s 1851 subdivision of Little Eltham. Its area was 30 acres lying east of the Diamond Creek and north of Henry Street. The collection has been catalogued into a number of Series. The main series are Series 1: Main Photographic Series; Series 2: Main Transparency Series; and Series 3: Brochures and Published materials. Every Item in each of these major Series has been individually catalogued on a spreadsheet, one spreadsheet per Series. A further 70 Series have been created to catalogue smaller, discrete collections of photographs and negatives and other memorabilia including registers, published materials and objects. The completion of its transfer to the Society was noted in Newsletter No. 159 November 2004. Generally memorabilia items classified as part of Council 's art collection and negatives of historical photographs have been retained by the Council. The items now stored at our Local History Centre are quite diverse. They include many photographs of Council activities, Councillors and Council staff. There are Council brochures, calendars and other publications. All of these items are catalogued and stored in quality archival boxes. Also included is a large collection of old Council registers such as letter books, contract registers, cash books, etc. Many of these are large leather bound volumes, more of interest for their appearance than for their content. The first meeting of the Memorabilia Reference Group was held December 5, 1996. The aim of the group was to facilitate all actions required for the safekeeping of the Shire of Eltham memorabilia.
