Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. The Kiewa Valley has promoted itself as a tourist hot spot since the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme concluded. Mt Beauty began as a construction town and was to be sold off but tourism became promising so the SECV handed the town over to the Bright Shire, houses were sold and businesses commenced. From the early 1960s the town promoted itself and Falls Creek as a tourist destination. The Kiewa Valley Accommodation group combined with the local advertisers to publish this brochure.This brochure promotes tourism all year round promoting the local businesses enabling them to succeed. As tourism is the main industry in Mt Beauty and Falls Creek since the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme finished, this advertising is important. Mt Beauty was a construction town built from 1948. The houses were English Pre-cut Types - several of each type were erected with several variations. This house had 3 bedrooms and is dated as 'traced on 18 Dec. 1956'. Mt Beauty is a construction town built by the SECV during the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme for workers and their families. Houses were provided along with many other facilities eg. schools. Jan Burnett took the photos describing the site as on the up-hill side of the Car Racing Track where a house now stands. The 'new' Tawonga Hall was in use before this one was demolished.The Tawonga Hall is a popular venue for Kiewa Valley residents. Mt Beauty township was built during the 1950's to house the employees of the State Electricity Commission working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. After the completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme many houses were sold and the public buildings handed over to the Alpine Shire. Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty for many years and wrote a book on the History of Mt Beauty. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Mt Beauty's history is unique as it was built as a construction town in the late 1940s. The information contained in the folder is a written history of the town's development. Alex, 1916 - 2011, worked as a foreman on Clover Dam. He served in WWII, was involved in the community (Mt Beauty & District Progress Association & Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre), achieved many awards, served as Shire Councillor and Mayor, was involved with tennis and golf committees. Elizabeth Edith Mack was born to parents William & Elizabeth (nee Wilmont) Hatton, in approx. 1873 in Moyston, Victoria. She married Frederick David Mack (a wool and skin buyer) in approx. 1903. Frederick Mack was born in 1968 in Warrnambool to parents Joseph and Louisa Mary (nee Despard) Mack. Joseph served as Shire Secretary. The Mack family (including Elizabeth and Frederick) occupied the same sandstone house in the town for more than a century. They had at least 5 children. Elizabeth Edith Mack died in Warrnambool in 1931 aged 58 years. The Circular Memorial Window was erected in her memory by her children. Elizabeth and Frederick's son, Ronald, became The Honorable Sir Ronald (William) Mack, M.L.C. President of the Legislative Council of Victoria. He was knighted in 1967 (the first Warrnambool -Born person to be so honoured) while Minister for Health and regarded the care of the Mentally Ill of prime importance but also the care of the aged. He was given a state funeral after his death in 1968, the service being conducted at Christ Church.The Mack family was a prominent pioneer family in Warrnambool. Her son Ronald William Mack was the first Warrnambool-born person to be knighted.Circular stained glass window above five lancet windows in the west wall of the second nave, depicts 'Christ Ascending in Glory'. The inscription is on a mosaic plaque below the central window.The mosaic tablet below the centrral light refers to this memorial to Elizabeth Mack. This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. This Hymn Book was given to Margaret (Peggie) Peacock by the Christ Church Choir, Warrnambool when she left Warrnambool in 1912. She was the sister of Archdeacon Andrew Peacock, the fourth Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool. Their brother was Sir Alexander Peacock, at one time Premier of Victoria. Margaret Peacock kept house for her brother and assisted him in his pastoral work. Her brother died in Warrnambool in 1912 and Margaret left the town. She died in 1947.This book is of considerable importance as it belonged to a Warrnambool resident in the early 1900s. She worked as a housekeeper for her brother, Archdeacon Peacock and assisted him in his pastoral duties in the Anglican Church. The sketch in the book shows that Margaret Peacock was interested in art work and the caption, ‘Where Memory Lingers’ shows that she had fond memories of her time in Warrnambool. The book was in the possession of her sister, Mrs Uglow, the wife of a Colac physician and this lady was a friend of Gladys Angus, the wife of a well-known Warrnambool doctor, Roy Angus. Mrs Uglow gave the book to Mrs Angus’ daughter, Berry McDade and she has handed it over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for safe-keeping. This is a maroon-coloured leather-bound book of 514 pages of hymns (music and words) and 31 pages of additional material at the end of the book. The inside of the cover has an ornamental gilt pattern on the edges and the page ends have red gilt shading. There are four loose pages, three of them relating to the ownership and donation of the book and one is a prayer for members of the Girls’ Friendly Society. The front cover has been personalised with gold lettering with the initials of the owner and there is an inscription inside relating to the original presentation of the book to the owner, Margaret Peacock. This is in silver and black script. There is also a sketch of Christ Church, Warrnambool by Margaret (Peggie) Peacock inserted into the third page. This is a framed photograph of a panoramic section of the Warrnambool township taken in 1887 to commemorate the Jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1887). The photograph is taken from Booval Hill (Liebig Street north) and shows the fencing in that area with groups of people in the foreground posing for the photograph. The panorama covers Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and includes private houses, a windmill and three tanks, St. John's Church, St. Joseph's Church, Tattersalls Hotel and the Saleyards.This photograph provides us with historical information on a section of the Warrnambool township in 1887 and is a valuable resource for researchers.This is a black and white photograph in a brown wooden frame and enclosed in glass. Although the medal is inscribed 'Warrnambool R C' we believe it to be a Warrnambool Bowling Club medal. The Warrnambool Bowls Club gave this medal to W&DHS in 1968 describing it as a medal won by life member William Kucks, club champion in 1895. Also newspaper reports show that William Kucks was the bowls club champion in 1895. No record has been found of William Kucks belonging to either rowing or rifle clubs. William Kucks was a long-time resident of Warrnambool, operating a boarding house in Timor Street in the 1860s and then a bakery in the same street for many years. He served as a town councilor 1899-1901.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of a Warrnambool sporting club in the 1890s and of a well-known 19th century Warrnambool resident and town councilor 1899-1901.This brass star shaped medal has a circular centre with text surrounded by a raised narrow annulus and eight near triangular hollow shapes interspersed with small spheres. on the obverse, The reverse has a metal hook and clip. There is a ring attached to the tip of one of the triangles with a second ring through it. This is a medal awarded by the Warrnambool Bowling Club to William Kucks in 1900. The Warrnambool Bowling Club was established in 1867 with a green near the Royal Hotel in Timor Street. The club still operates in Kelp Street. William Kucks was a long-time resident of Warrnambool, operating a boarding house in the town in Timor Street in the 1860s and then a bakery in the same street for many years.This medal is of considerable interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Bowls Club in the early 20th century and of a well-known 19th century and early 20th century Warrnambool resident, William Kucks.This silver gilt covered medallion is diamond shaped with the edge incised into four small triangles and four curved and pointed shapes. The latter have four adjacent leaf shapes in relief. The centralised text is surrounded by a horseshoe of graduated, rounded pentagons. This tin comes from the Melbourne firm of Rolfe and Co. and would have held tea. Rolfe & Co. was established by George Rolfe (Senior) in 1854 as a wholesale wine, spirit and provisions business. George Rolfe was a member of the Upper House of the Victorian Government from 1860 to 1862 and in 1867. He died in 1871 and his son, also George, succeeded him as the managing director of the business. This George Rolfe (1837-1919) came to Australia with his family in 1849 and lived first in South Australia and then came to Melbourne, joining his father’s business, George Rolfe was a keen farmer and fisherman and after holidaying in Warrnambool for some time, bought, in the early 1870s, the property at the mouth of the Hopkins River which he named Lyndoch after the town in South Australia. He came frequently to Warrnambool. He later extended his farming interests which included the properties of Fairy Hill and Shipley. George Rolfe married Jane Ann Lake in 1891 and the Lyndoch property passed to two of his stepdaughters. Today the Rolfe property is the site of an aged care facility. The business of Rolfe & Co. continued well into the 20th century.This tin is of great interest as a memento of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, Warrnambool and his Melbourne business, Rolfe & Co. George Rolfe was a prominent person in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a metal container, rectangular in shape. It originally held tea. The sides of the tin have painted lettering regarding the contents and the supplier. This paint was originally in yellow, blue and brown tonings. The lid is round and slots into the rounded opening. The tin has been re-painted in a silver colour on the top and inside. The tin, especially the lettering on the sides, is much rusted and in some places the words are illegible. This inventory of the contents of the old Museum in Warrnambool dates from the 1920s. A Mechanics Institute under the management of a local committee was established in Warrnambool in 1854 and a Mechanics Institute building was erected in Liebig Street in 1871 (site of present Municipal Library). Museum items and art works began to be collected and housed in the Mechanics Institute building at that time under the care of a committee member and local policeman, Joseph Archibald. This collection did not survive in any significant form after Archibald left the town but it was revived and vastly expanded when he retired and returned to Warrnambool in 1880. Archibald is regarded as the founder of the Museum which officially dates from 1883. In 1910 the Warrnambool Town Council took over the management of the Mechanics Institute, including the Museum collection. This museum continued until 1963 and was a much-loved institution in the city. The contents of the old Museum were dispersed, with many items lost but a considerable portion of the collection was under the care of Warrnambool Art Gallery and John Welsh, the Director in the 1970s, in an effort to keep the records of the old Museum intact, had the 1920s inventory reprinted. This inventory of Warrnambool’s old Museum is of considerable historical importance as it is an almost complete record of the Museum’s contents in the 1920s and so is very useful to researchers today.This is an inventory of 190 pages with a cardboard backing. The pages have three punched holes on the left side and are tied together with black and white cotton cord. At the front of the pages is a plastic envelope with a heading. The pages contain typed material, mostly in mauve ink and these are copies of the original typing. The typing on some pages is very faint and two pages have been re-copied to make them more legible. This stool appears to have been home-made. It was used in the days (first half of the 20th century) when cows were mostly milked by hand. It was most likely to have been used to milk a house cow, perhaps in Warrnambool or a nearby town. The cow would have been kept during the day time on the town common and brought back to the home for milking and returned to the common the next day. The production of milk, cheese and butter has been an important industry in the Warrnambool district since the second half of the 19th century, with the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford being established in 1888. It is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. This stool is of considerable interest as an example of the stools used when cows were hand milked and when many households in the towns and outer areas had a house cow to supply milk for the household. This is a hand-made wooden milking stool with a rectangular piece of wood for the seat and four rounded legs that taper slightly outwards. This book documents the lives of William and Agnes Brebner and family. William’s father, Isaac had come to Warrnambool in the 1860s and had a tailoring business in the town. By the beginning of the 20th century he was the caretaker at the Sea Baths in Gilles Street, Warrnambool and the family lived in the caretaker’s cottage (Les O’Callaghan History House today). William Brebner established a paint shop in Timor Street in 1916 and this prominent business remained in the Brebner family until 1977. It continued in other hands until the early years of the 21st century. This book is of significance as it documents the life and times of William Brebner and his family. The Brebners have been important, particularly in the 20th century, in the business and community world of Warrnambool.This is a soft cover book of 132 pages. It has a blue cover with a black and white photograph of William Brebner and black printing on the front cover. This letterhead was used in the business of Alex Black, a Warrnambool house painter and decorator. Alexander Black (1862-1918) came to Warrnambool in the late 1880s and established his business in Timor Street. He was a Town Councillor and a Trustee of the Friendly Societies Park. Kinross Court in Warrnambool was originally called Blacks Lane and was named after Alexander Black. In 1962 it was renamed Kinross Court after Alexander Black’s birthplace in Scotland. This letterhead is an attractive one and is a good example of a letterhead from the early 1900s. It is also a memento of Alex Black, a Warrnambool businessman in the 19th and early 20th centuries.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper which has crease marks from being folded. Shackell's Bonded Stores in Murray Esplanade was a very early building in Echuca. Mr Shackell was shipping agent. He built the building with a Jewish Star right at the top to show his interest in his religion. He was also an early town councillor and may have even served a term as Mayor. His leasee was William McCulloch who was also a shipping agent, amongst other things. Written on the front of the building are the words "Shackell's Bonded Stores / Wm. McCulloch & Co. Proprietors / Forwarding Agents / Steamer Agents /. & Contracting Carriers & / Customs House Agents." Written on the window "Office of the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Darling Steamers."This photograph shows the importance of shipping agents in the early life of Echuca. It also shows the state of the roads in the 1870's. This building is still in use in the 21st Century with some of the wording still intact on the building. Wm McCulloch and Co went on to become a major international trading company. James Shackell made many contributions to early life in Echuca and there is a street named after him. The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood to house visitors to the town crossing the Murray River on his punt crossing, which was situated just below the Bridge Hotel on the Murray River. The accommodation was spacious and grand! In the right back corner of the photograph, the 'lantern' roof of the St Georges Hall can be seen. The gasworks in Anstruther St, allowed the streets of Echuca to be lit at night, therefore improving the safety of the citizens of the town. The gasworks were operational for many year providing cooking and lighting facilities to houses as well as to the streets. This picture shows the height of the flood in either 1906 or 1916? The Senior Citizens Club now stands on the site. The Central Kindergarten and Echuca Primary School are also nearby.This postcard is significant because it shows the height of the floods before the town levee banks had been built. It also shows the need for flood proofing the town. It also shows the size of the gasworks in the early 20th Century. This is a picture of the original Town Hall building built in High Street in the 1890's. It was designed by renowned Bendigo Architect W.C .Vahland. This picture was taken in 1979 when the Echuca Library was housed there. The Echuca Library operated out of this building from 1965 up to 2013 when the new library was built. In this photograph there are two people standing in the doorway and two cars parked in the street.This photograph is significant because it shows the first Town Hall building built in High Street in the late 1890's. The building was designed by W.C Vahland and was also used as the Law Courts before the Law Court building was built in Law Court Place. This building has also been used as the High School, while the Echuca High School was being built in the 1920's it was also used as a Kindergarten and the town Library operated there from 1965 to 2012 when the new Library was built. In 1869 the Council moved to name this park "Victoria Park. The cricket pitch construction began in 1873 and major improvements to the ground were undertaken in 1881. It is still the primary sporting ground in Echuca, offering AFL football oval, cricket pitch and nets, athletics and entry to the Echuca boat ramp and the natural bush land of the scenic drive. It also houses Echuca Council caravan park. The signage in this photograph is no longer there and the enterance to the caravan park has moved.This area of Echuca has historically been a major recreational area for the town. Being the primary sporting ground since its establishment in 1869., the area has a number of sporting and recreational facilities for the people of Campaspe Shire, from natural bush walks in and along the Murray river to more formal facilities such as AFL football ground, firefighting training area, netball courts, cricket pitch and nets, and grass tennis courts. In this case the careless action of a member of the public throwing a lighted match from a car, which can cause extensive damage. Footage features the Shire of Eltham War Memorial tower at Kangaroo Ground before it was modified with a fire spotter’s cabin. Discusses fire spotting operations from the tower. Shows a fire spotter walking around the top of the tower. A fire is detected, and the information is relayed to the nearest fire station, in this case, Diamond Creek. The telephone call is received, and the alarm sounded. Captain Clarrie Stone and firemen May and Shaw leave their workplaces and prepare for action. Scenes of running across the Main Hurstbridge road showing the shops (Shell service station and Chemist prominent). Scenes entering the fire station which has a pictorial warning covering the entire door “Only you can prevent forest fires – If you’re careless – we’re homeless!” Eric Holt pinpoints the location of the fire while Captain Clarrie Stone and Fireman Shaw take note. The advance vehicle (an FE Holden ute, rego GTE-696) leaves to assess the extent of the fire. Having assessed the fire, Fireman Shaw communicates with base showing radio with call sign VL3JZ. Opens with the scene of a fire engine outside the Diamond Creek Fire Station then various trophies reflecting the competition success of the brigade in various track and disciplined events. Two trophies shown of particular pride to the brigade were for first place in the Torchlight Procession at the State Championships in Mildura in 1986 and also at Swan Hill in 1981. Still photo scenes of ex Captain Clarrie Stone, Brigade Captain for 21 years; ex Captain Jack Marks, 10 years; ex Captain Ian Douglas, 10 years. Cuts to scene of radio control room, January 1969, and news of a fire on the northern side of the township of Diamond Creek. With scenes of flames in bush, the narration explains that until the early 1960s the area was an orchard district which protected the town against the savagery of bushfires. But due to competition from other areas more suitable for orcharding and easier transport to Melbourne the district could no longer remain competitive, and orchards were replaced by grassed areas, which together with the bush areas were a feeding ground for fire. On 8th January 1969, high temperatures and strong north winds, were, with the carelessness of some individual all that was necessary to produce the worst fire the district had seen. Cuts to scene of blackened fields and cattle - Hundreds of hectares of grass land were blackened, and cattle had to be transported to other areas for agistment. Scene of destroyed buildings in the township – 13 houses and the public hall in the town were destroyed as was the theatre equipment which was owned by the fire brigade. The Church of England Hall and bell tower were badly damaged. The whole town could have been burnt out but for the determination, skill, and courage of the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade. Scenes of all that was left of the home on the hill on the west side of the Church of England. Also, the remains of the old Pisy (?) home on the top of the same hill near Lambert Street, and the ruined Crocker home. Cuts to a scene in the mid-1970s to mid-1980s of a house fire in Haley Street attended by the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade. Although the house was severely damaged, it was saved. Mentions that whilst assistance is appreciated, in some circumstances, those doing so are not properly dressed for fighting fires. Breathing apparatus is a must in structure fire attack. Next scene (either on Mangarook or Coventry oval) showing off four Diamond Creek Fire Brigade efficient and very expensive firefighting units. Features a forward control vehicle Toyota 4WD used for conveying task force personnel to the required areas; a Hino Model 3.2 tanker, diesel powered and carries 3,000 litres of water and has a 16 HP petrol driven pump which delivers 900 litres of water per minute; an International tanker (registration TCM-418) which carries 3,000 litres of water with pumping capacity of 600 litres per minute. The Ford diesel powered pumper (registration MXE-754) is a well-equipped vehicle with a water capacity of 1,000 litres and capable of pumping 1,900 litres of water per minute from the main pump, has many lockers which hose equipment such as breathing apparatus and various types of hose nozzles and foam making equipment. The vehicle carries 360m of 64mm diameter hose which can be laid out from the rear lockers and a portable lighting plant, an Oxy Viva resuscitator to revive smoke inhalation victims and forcible entry tools to gain access to structure fires. Views of the main pump and control panel on the vehicle. As well as the main pump, the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary pump which allows the facility to pump whilst moving. Fire fighters must undergo constant training and hone their skills, Scenes of a training exercise using the pumper to pump from static water. First, the short lengths of suction hose are coupled, a strainer fitted to ensure debris does not foul the pump. Gauges must be constantly monitored to ensure manageable water pressures are maintained. Pressures are normally controlled to allow two fire fighters to work at each nozzle outlet. Two nozzles are tested, one adjustable jet fog type which is used on flammable gasses or within a structure fire to absorb heat. A straight jet nozzle to project water long distances to protect exposed surfaces close to a fire radiated heat. The pumper is quite a versatile vehicle in handling structure fires, but it also carries specialist equipment needed in containing hazardous chemical incidents. Cuts to scene of parade – the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade has with other neighbouring brigades participated in most town fairs and earns the respect of the watching public. It can be seen why this brigade has been so successful at disciplined contests. Views of Plenty Fire Brigade Road Rescue unit which is equipped with the “Jaws of Life” Scenes of athletic competitions – many neighbouring brigades indulge in friendly but keen competition at the Diamond Creek Town Fair. The young are also encouraged to participate in all aspects of Junior Fire Brigade activities and become tomorrow’s generation of volunteer fire fighters. Scene of the 1986 Diamond Creek Town Fair which was the last time veteran Captain Clarrie Stone BEM marched with the brigade. The institutions of law and order in Colonial Victoria included the police, courts and prisons. The 1852 report of the Snodgrass Select Committee appointed to "identify the policing needs of the colony” noted there existed seven independent police forces that did not co-operate or regularly communicate. Following the committee's report all these police entities were merged into the Victoria Police, founded on 8 January 1853, to implement law and order responsibilities throughout the Colony of Victoria. The Eltham Courthouse (1860) and adjacent Police Residence (1859) formed a justice precinct established in the immediate aftermath of the 1852 police inquiry and the effects of the gold rush. The physical presence of these buildings, in the centre of the early Eltham township, defined centralised control over law and order. In the early days the Police Constable in charge would conduct his duties travelling around the district by horse; a stable was located at the rear of the residence. At times the horse would be grazed on the paddocks across the road. Horseshoes were forged by the blacksmith beside the Courthouse on the high side of “Policeman’s Hill”. Along with the stable, there was a two-cell bluestone lockup where prisoners were held awaiting trial in the adjacent Courthouse. Their meals were usually provided by the policeman’s wife or from the hotel just up the road. With the arrival of the railway in 1902 the town centre gradually shifted towards the railway station. The Police Station and operations were moved into the town centre in 1961 to a renovated house in Pryor Street, which was later replaced by the current Police Station. From 1961-1981 the residence was occupied by the Vermin and Noxious Weeds Destruction Section of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey. Prior to August 1967 the former Police Station was dragged to the rear of Police Residence to make way for the construction of a driveway and access from Main Road. The building was placed on the site of a former Scullery and modified for Lands Department use. In 1981 the Shire of Eltham took over management of the former Police Residence in Eltham. It remained unoccupied for a period whilst its future was discussed in Council. It was then used for a community job creation scheme until 1985. In 1985 the Shire of Eltham Parks and Environment occupied the residence. Council improved the driveway but later added a second rear access from Brougham Street due to the dangerous nature of the Main Road entrance. Additionally, a rear toilet facility between the Police Residence and the relocated former Police Station, which was doubling up as a lunchroom. Council also commenced discussions to re-establish a replica Police Station. Around November 1986 the former Police Station was demolished; believed to have been suffering termite damage. About 1989, after some years of discussion, a replica Police Station was built, based on photographs, to act as a lunchroom and meeting room for the Parks and Environment staff and volunteers doing community service. In 1996 Eltham District Historical Society held discussions with Nillumbik Shire Council commissioners throughout the year regarding a home for the Society. A proposal was put forward by the Society in October to occupy the former Police Residence. In March 1997 Eltham District Historical Society gained access to former Police Residence and on July 12, 1998, moved into its Local History Centre. In July 2018, Eltham District Historical Society gained access to the replica Police Station (which had been used as a music library and storage for the Eltham Concert Band) for use as part of regular heritage tours for schools and community-based groups. Corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street, Eltham. Walkers gather for the beginning of the walk led by local historian Russell Yeoman. The tree-covered hill that forms the western backdrop to the Eltham town centre exhibits many characteristics that are considered to contribute to the special character of Eltham. They include unmade streets, steeply sloping land, extensive tree cover and a large number of mud brick and pise (rammed earth) houses. A number of these were constructed in the 1940s and 50s by well-known builders John Harcourt and Alistair Knox. A significant proportion from this period were constructed by owner-builders. We walked around the upper part of the hill in the area of Kerrie Crescent and Peter Street. We visited several interesting houses (for external viewing only). The walk commenced at 2pm at the corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street (Melway ref 21H4) and was about 2 km. This free walk was open to the general public as well as Society members.
