The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Memories compiled by Peter Rosewall; who attended the last NDSN school PTS 108 between 1986 - 89.Copy two of two photocopied copies of newspaper article from Swan Hill Guardian 1951 about The Hospital and Charities Commission establishing the Bendigo Northern District School of Nursing. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The two sports featuring in these photos are touch football and tug-of-war. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. A brown wooden award depicting a relief of an award with an image of black and white lawn bowls and a white jack on a green background. At the top of the board is an engraved plate that reads "Canberra Shield Indoor Bias Bowls for the Blind National Championships" with separate scroll work images of flowers and ferns at the top left and right hand edges. Gordon Rothacker died in 2010 at the age of 81. Harness Racing Victoria's (HRV) highest individual award, the Gordon Rothacker Medal, is named in his honour. Rothacker won a record 14 Melbourne drivers' premierships between 1949 and 1973 as well as capturing 10 Melbourne trainers' premierships between 1953 and 1976. He was the first reinsman to land 500 winners on Melbourne tracks, doing so at Moonee Valley in 1987 some 39 years after driving his first winner at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds as an 18-year-old in the inaugural season of night trotting. Awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday honours of 1972 for his services to trotting, Rothacker was the Caduceus Club's first living legend when inducted in 1995 and has also been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by HRV. This is a set of six photographs of an Army Survey Regiment inter-squadron athletics competition held at Epsom, Bendigo in 1982. Personnel from Headquarters, Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons took part in traditional athletics events, wheelbarrow race, sack race, fireman’s carry and tug-of-war novelty events. She bettered the shot put by an amazing 5.10 metres, while also creating new records for the long jump, discus and javelin. Rifle competitions were popular activities for men in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. The Kew MUIOOF was based in Union Street, Kew and as a friendly society competed in competitions locally and in neighbouring municipalities.Monochrome print positive mounted on card. The first Lildale Show Girl competition was held in 1957 as part if the annual Lilydale Show. The Lilydale Shoe had stopped during the war years and reformed in 1954. The show was restarted by John Plant and Lloyd Gill ( owners of the Lilydale Express) Black and white photograph of the five women who won the highest places in the First Lilydale Show Girl competition in 1957. The winner of the competition, Robyn Hoyland is pictured centre, second prize, Susan Mandel is pictured to the far right, third place is Faye Hart, who is standing second from from right.
