Victoria HOWLETT (b. 1945- ) Born London, United Kingdom Arrived Australia 1946 Victoria Howlett studied Ceramics at RMIT. She lectured at Prahran College for several years before travelling to Canada, The United States of America, Mexico, Africa and England. She began working as a potter full time in 1977, establishing a studio in Melbourne. In 1985 Victoria Howlett won the Stuart Devlin Award, Melbourne. She is a practicing artist in Apollo Bay, Victoria. The ceramic work of Victoria Howlett draws on the Oribe tradition of painted surface designs. During the 1980s, she moved from rounded vessels and lidded jars to the platter as the form to be decorated, using a well-charged brush and slips coloured with oxide. Wheel thrown stoneware jar with dipped and painted glaze decoration. The ceramic works of Victoria Howlett are impressed 'TOR' or painted or incised 'Victoria Howlett'. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. They bought works from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught there. This money box is believed to be an antique Prattware piece modelled on a n English Methodist Chapel. It was a gift to a young girl, Sarah Ann Esam born in 1850 in Lincoln, England. Her parents John and Ann Esam emigrated to Australia in 1865 with six children one of whom was Sarah. John Esam became well known in Warrnambool as an engineer and windmill maker. His best known windmill is the one he made for "Lyndoch". Sarah Ann Esam died in Henna Street, Warrnambool in April 1915 on Easter Monday. This money box is of considerable significance because of its age, its artistic attractiveness and its connection to the Esam family who were prominent in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This glazed piece of pottery is a child's money box modelled on an English Methodist Chapel. It has a blue tiled roof with yellow edges, a slot for coins at the back.and two chimneys at each end of the building. The primary colour of the cottage is white It has two storeys, the upper one has six lead light windows framed with yellow and the ground storey has two brown doors with lead light fan windows. There is a pink colored figure standing in one corner of the base. The base is green representing grass. The edges of the base feature blue crosses interspersed with yellow dots. Warrnambool, established in 1847, became a Municipality in 1856, a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1883 and a City in 1918. This bottle opener has most probably been produced by the City of Warrnambool for promotional purposes and may have been given as gifts to notable visitors. The logo used is a version of the original ‘By These We Flourish’ seal which was first adopted by the Council in 1856. On the top portion is the Royal Coat of Arms. On the lower section is a sailing ship and a sheaf of wheat. The seal was designed by John Macdonald, a local schoolteacher and auctioneer. This bottle opener is of some interest as a promotional item produced for the Warrnambool City Council. It may be useful for display. This is a bottle opener made of electro-plated nickel silver. It has a badge with blue, white and gold enamelling with the old logo of the City of Warrnambool. Warrant Officer Class Two Bill Woolford served with the Royal Marines during World War Two. Following the war he served in Hong Kong before migrating to Australia in the 1950s. He joined the Victorian Police and was posted to Wodonga. There he joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles serving as Squadron Sergeant Major until his retirement in 1967. This tankard was presented to him on his retirement. Marjorie Morgan discovered some of his carvings and found nothing about the carver. She set herself the project and contacted many family members who had received a carving as a gift. She organised a family reunion so everyone could bring their carvings to one place (Surrey Gardens) and have them photographed for the book. This digital image is taken at the time of the opening of the 'Annie Dane Ward' in the Melbourne District Nursing Society After-Care Hospital. Mrs. G. G. Henderson is the Society's President. She is receiving a Centenary gift, a cheque of 500 pounds, from Mrs. Robert Hunter, on behalf of Mr. John Stephenson Dane. Mr. Edgar, M.L.C,. officially designated the Ward and The Rev. A. T. Holden, President-General of the Methodist Church of Australasia, dedicated the Ward. The portrait of Mrs. Annie Dane hangs above the fireplace in the Ward.The Melbourne District Nursing Society, (MDNS), built the After-Care Home in 1926. The Home was extended and the name changed to Melbourne District Nursing Society and After-Care Hospital in 1934. It was situated at 45 Victoria Parade, Collingwood and various Wards were named after donors or patrons of MDNS After Care. Patients of the Society who needed more care than could be given at home, but did not need hospitalization, were admitted to the After Care, along with many patients from Melbourne hospitals who needed further care before going home. Many children were nursed there, some long term, during the Polio epidemic and MDNS employed teachers to give them schooling. In September 1930 an Ante-Natal Clinic was established. In October 1934 a Women's Welfare Clinic was opened to educate women on birth control. This was the first of its kind in Melbourne. The MDNS After Care Hospital was under District's banner until 1956. In 1957 the MDNS and the After-Care separated with the Government taking over the running of the After-Care. Melbourne District Nursing Society then became the Melbourne District Nursing Service and, after Royal patronage, became Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS).In the centre of this digital image, and on the left of the group, is Mrs. G. Associates Cup Donor: Deed of Gift: No The trophy was originally donated when women could only be associated members of RBYC with the then RNCE requirement there should be at least one female on board. The trophy was not used for a number of years until females became full members and in 2007 was reintroduced with the requirement that the skipper must be a female member of RBYC and holding a current AYF card.
