Item in the collection re William Anthony (Bill) Theodore DSM. The Sailor is Willam Anthony Theodore DSM, enlisted on 2.9.1940 in the RAN No PM2981. He served in the Seige of Tobruk, Greece, Crete, Matapan, Singapore, Pacific Islands, New Guinea to the Phillipine's. The HMAS Vendetta he was sailing on made 39 trips into Tobruk Harbour during the siege. In October 1941 so many bombs were dropped around the Vendetta that her Boilers and Engines shifted on their mountings and was ordered to Singapore for repairs. After Bill served on HMAS Arunta and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for "Gallantry, Skill and Devotion to Duty" during the Assault Operations at Lingayen Gulf. Bill was discharged from the RAN on 21.11.1945. From 1956 - 1995 over specific years Bill held the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer & Welfare Officer of the "Bendigo Rats of Tobruk Association". In early January 1945, Australian warships took part in their next big naval action of the campaign when American forces were landed at Lingayen Gulf for the invasion of Luzon Island. Their objective was the capital, Manila. The frigates Gascoyne and Warrego carried out survey tasks and escort duties, coming under artillery fire and also attacks from aircraft. The Kanimbla, Manoora and Westralia again transported American troops for the landings and once again the escorts included the cruisers Shropshire and Australia – the latter had undergone repair – and the destroyers Arunta and Warramunga. Whist not confirmed, this large cane woven oval tray with The Philippines Coat of Arms in the centre above list of Royal Australian Navy ships that were involved in the liberation of the Philippines, is believed to have belonged to Robert Hamilton Hutchieson PM 4802 who served on HMAS Westralia as a landing craft coxswain in the Southwest Pacific Campaign 1942 to 1945. Organisation-Club/society-sport3767.4a: A receipt of purchase from Henry Jackson, General ironmonger and Iron merchant, by Mr F.D. Jones (labelled as secretary on the receipt/treasure in other documents) on behalf of the Devils Own Cricket club. The receipt is a professionally made, printed template printed on blue/purple coloured limed paper with red margins. The transactions made by Mr Jones are handwritten in cursive font with black ink. The receipt indicates that payment was made to Mr Jackson on the 10th and 25th of March 1875. the pound was used as currency. 3767.4b: This receipt is dated March 25th 1875. Detailing the repair of a cricket ball. W.B. Fox, a saddler and harness marker, executed the repairs. The receipt is a professionally made, printed template in black ink on a light blue sheet of lined paper with red margins. The purchase order and payment remarks are handwritten in cursive with black ink. Pounds were used a currency. 3767.4c: This receipt is entirely handwritten in cursive with black ink on a torn rectangular piece of blue coloured paper. There is no official printing or branding on the receipt. The receipt details the purchase of a cricket ball by the Treasurer of the DOCC in March 1875 from F. Macoboy. The page has a large red stain/smudge in the top right-hand corner. 3767.4d: This professionally printed receipt is printed in black ink on a rectangular piece of white/cream coloured paper. The official branding is that of W. Welch, a general printer, binder etc. from Sandhurst. The record of the purchase of a 150-page record book for the DOCC by Mr. Jones is handwritten in cursive with black ink. The receipt is dated 8th March 1875 and payment was made on 9th March 1875. 3767.4e: This reciept is a handwritten note in black ink on a blue piece of lined paper no larger than a business card. The note, dated 1st March 1875, is addressed to Mr. F Jones, Hon Treasurer Devils Own C.C. The note is written by R.W. Franklyn in reference to 3767.4c and reads as follows: "Please pay M'acoboy 5/- price of ball" 3767.4f: This receipt in professionally printed in black ink on a blue coloured, lined paper. The branding refers to Henry Jackson, as per 3767.4a, and details the purchase of cricket equipment by the Law C.C. This collection of papers have come from the offices of William Ardlie a local solicitor. He was born in Moonee Ponds in 1843 and was admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the supreme Court in 1865. From 1867 to 1878 he was in partnership with George Barber and then continued to practise until his late eighties which made him the oldest practising lawyer in Australia. He was involved in local councils and organisations such as the Hospital and Anglican Church.He was associated with several large homes in Warrnambool including Wyton presently the home of Emmanual College Warrnambool. He died in 1933.His son E L Ardlie also practised as a solicitor from the same offices from 1893. A number of the invoices included relate to the Estate of James drought who was a local policeman and owner of a number of properties and operated in various trades such as George Ramsay manufacturer of stoves and chimneys, J Rogers plumber & gas fitter and Christian & Dodds who were carpenters and joiners. There are a number of documents which relate to the Chinese, many of whom operated market gardens along the Merri River. They were a familiar part of Warrnambool from around 1872 until around 1940. The names mentioned in these documents include Ah Foo,Charles Quing Bow, Andrew Quing Bow Ah Bing Ah Jing Ah Moon and Ah Seong. They were reknown for their supply of fresh vegetables to the people of the town. They leased land from John Moore. These documents are a cross section of the types of documents which were used and are still used in the operation of businesses. They provide a social snapshot of people and the business which they conducted with their solicitors in this case William and E L Ardlie who were a long standing legal firm in the district. Situated at the eastern end of York Street, Eltham, 'Shinrone', the former home of Professor William (Mac) MacMahon Ball was one of the first in the Shire of Eltham to incorporate mud-brick. Professor MacMahon Ball, a political scientist, writer, broadcaster and diplomat and family moved to York Street, Eltham in 1945 into a timber cottage built around the 1890s and in poor repair. Mac asked Alistair Knox to renovate the home and he expanded the living area and added verandahs. In 1948 Montsalvat artist and sculptor Sonia Skipper supervised the building of most of the mud-brick studio. Neighbour Gordon Ford made the mud-bricks. Mac also asked John Harcourt, who had worked with him as a journalist in shortwave broadcasting, to build a pise (rammed earth) and stone addition to the largely timber house. Harcourt built two bedrooms - including an attic bedroom - a balcony with a shower and toilet, and a fireplace and chimney of local stone. It could also be used to move passengers to and from a ship as well as cargo on, to and from the vessel. It looks a little like a child's swing but usually has a pulley system that allows the user to adjust the length of the hanging piece of rope, and in so-doing adjusts the height above the floor or ground or sea. In modern times a harness would also be worn by the bosun’s chair user for safety reasons. Bosun's chairs are also used by window cleaners, construction workers and painters. The bosun’s chair is sometimes just a short plank, or even a canvas sling. The bosun's chair is significant for its association with maritime equipment carried on board a vessel in the late 19th and early 20th century for maintenance and safety purposes. Lyttelton served in the Second Boer War as Commander of the 4th Brigade from 1899. He temporarily became General Officer Commanding the 2nd Division and the commanded the 4th Division. The Division was involved in the Battle of Spion Kop and the Battle of Vaal Krantz, leading to the Relief of Ladysmith 1900. Lord Roberts referred to Lyttelton as an officer "with great coolness under fire, and considerable tactical knowledge and resource........an excellent commander in the field." Following the end of the Boer War in 1902, Lyttelton became Commander-in-Chief of the whole of South Africa. He and his wife sought to repair relations with the Boer community. In the South Africa honours of 1902 Lyttelton was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He retired in 1912 and under insistence by the King was appointed as Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea from that time until his death there in 1931. This fountain was created as the result of a bequest from Ballarat businessman Carsten Heinrich Petersen who was killed at the age of eighty-five years when crossing Sturt Street opposite the Base Hospital. On the other side of the street were three brick shops which he owned. The fountain has four bronze frog water spouts beneath four marble stork spouts. Above the top bowl is another stork in bronze with its wings spread and water issues from its outstretched beak. The Petersen Fountain has been restored many times, first in 1977 with funds provided by the Rotary Club of Ballarat South. In 1989 further restoration works were completed to replace bronze frogs and a brass and copper stork made by Ballarat craftsman Lloyd Lusk to replace the original bird which was stolen and never recovered. The second stork was also stolen on the 3rd of August 1983 and further repairs of the fountain were carried out in 1993. The artwork is of historical and aesthetic significance to the people of Ballarat. The Petersen Fountain is carved marble, features storks carved into its base and the faces of cherubs in the bowl. Built in 1874 in Sunderland England she was employed carrying cargo around the world and rounded Cape Horn 23 times in 26 years. In 1900 she was acquired by Mr J J Craig, renamed James Craig in 1905 and began to operate between New Zealand and Australia until 1911. Unable to compete with freight cargo, in later years James Craig was used as a collier and later laid up, then used as a hulk, until eventually being abandoned at Recherche Bay in Tasmania. In 1932 she was sunk by fishermen who blasted a 3-metre hole in her stern. Restoration of James Craig began in 1972, when volunteers (now the Sydney Heritage Fleet) refloated her and towed her to Hobart for initial repairs. Brought back to Sydney under tow in 1981, her hull was placed on a submersible pontoon to allow work on the hull restoration to proceed. Over twenty-five years, the vessel was restored and relaunched in 1997. The donation of coins is and was considered part of religious life and mentioned in Christian, Jewish and Islamic texts. With the need and expansion of charitable works occurring outside religious life, charity boxes began to spread into hospitals, orphanages and asylums. The need for non-fixed boxes grew with the rise in charities and their activities outside a fixed building. Collection boxes could be large (and therefore hard to move) or could be held by individuals acting as collection agents, working at a specific location, moving between dwellings or at events. In this example, the boxes were placed in a semi-permanent location, such as a shop counter or bar, for people to donate money. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. WODONGA'S SECOND COURTHOUSE The Court House was situated in the Customs or Bond Store building alongside the Wodonga Police Station in 93 High Street. This was on the west side of High Street at its intersection with Bond Street. The building was converted to the courthouse in 1920. In early 1964, the courthouse building was burnt beyond repair and furniture and other property destroyed. The cause of the fire was never found. The Police Station was lucky to survive but only because of the efforts of the local Fire Brigade. After the fire, the court was held first at the old Fire Station premises near where the present Wodonga Post Office, then it moved to a vacant building in Mitchell Street which was later turned into a Child Care Centre. 1019.1 and 1019.2 - Black and white photograph of SEC Tram 14 involved with a collision with a Ford truck during 1939 on the corner of Drummond St. North and Webster St. Ford truck registration 277.745 . Both vehicles have windows smashed and other damage. Tram painted in 1930's colour scheme with a small "Pay as You Enter" sign adjacent to the open door. Known to be SEC photos originally. See SEC Photo collection item. Was reprinted in the Ballarat News during the early to mid 1980's. Other photos of this accident gave close up details of lining used in the tram paint scheme. At Lazarus - Bailed 4,828 tanks. At New Chum Railway - Cleaned and tested boilers and flues, effected repairs to machinery and shaft, and started bailing at 3 pm on Friday 29th inst, and bailed 965 tanks. BHS CollectionBendigo Weekly from Friday, June 28, 2002 - Snippets of Bendigo history, the Pall Mall story, part two - by Edith Lunn. Close to the jeweller's shop, we came to Chancery Lane. Many early legal firms had their offices there. Among them were: Quick&Rymer, Luke Murphy&Don and Macoboy&Taylor. A branch of the Bendigo united Friendly Society's Dispensary opened on the corner. Other small business in the walk included a florist, men's hairdresser and a boot and shoes repairer. Moving on there was Betteridge's Agency for the Singer sewing machine company, Wilkinson's photographic studio, Sutton's music shop and Favaloro's cake shop and café the ''Savoy'' was opened in the 1920's. Whitelock and Carter had their men outfitters business in the building, Cocking's was a very popular drapery store. After Cocking's closed down, Stoneman's supermarket opened in the premises. Alongside there was a passageway that led upstairs to the office of Phillip Secher and Son, Accountants and the Bendigo jockey club. The photograph shows Mrs James Cameron cutting the ribbon at the opening of the Orbost Pile Bridge in 1922. The first bridge was officially opened in August, 1893 (ref. S.R.M. 12.8.1893) by Mrs W. Watt, the mother of Councillor Watt, who presided over the opening of the 1922 bridge. This bridge was extensively damaged when a herd of cattle allegedly stampeded over it causing the cable to snap. Even after repairs it became obvious that a new bridge was needed. This second bridge, was built by the Victorian Railways and the Country Roads Board. Constructed at a cost of 35,000 pounds and used second-hand girders from the Flinders Street- Spencer Street viaduct. On July 4 1922 it was officially opened by Mrs James Cameron. Unfortunately, her husband, who had long championed the building of the bridge so that it would be ready for the railway to continue to the border, was too ill to attend the ceremony. In fact, James Cameron died on July 13 after a long and severe illness (ref. S.R.M. 20.7.1922). Carlton Refuge/Carlton Home was established in 1857 in Madeline Street, Carlton (relocating in 1890 to Keppel Street, Carlton). The Carlton Home provided maternity care for married and unmarried mothers, and residential care for infants and toddlers unable to be at home with their mother. It also operated a day-care centre for children. Most of the residents were mothers or children on private placements. The Children's Welfare Department used the Carlton Home as a maternity home for wards, a foster home for infant wards, and for children requiring placements under the infant life protection provisions of the Children's Welfare Act. By the late 1940s, the home was in a bad state of repair and it closed in 1949. In 1951, the facility reopened as the Queen Elizabeth Maternal and Child Health Centre that also operated as an Infant Welfare and Mothercraft Training School. The Centre provided after-care for nursing mothers and babies transferring from maternity hospitals, and specialised care for babies referred by private practitioners and the Social Welfare Department – babies who were premature, frail or had feeding or similar problems. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. These tool kits were often carried by men so they were equipped to deal with minor repair jobs away from home. A variety of companies in Britain and Germany manufactured similar kits prior to WW2.A metal miniature tool kit including a screwdriver, an awl and 2 augers stored in a metal cylinder. The cylinder screws together in the centre. There is a central slot on each side of the cylinder sot that the end of each tool can be inserted. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection, including a series of photos of buildings in High Street (formerly Sydney Road), Wodonga. The CWA Hall officially opened in 1938 having been built on land granted by the Wodonga Council. Wodonga Infant Welfare Centre also occupied part of the building until 1959. Last meeting of the CWA in that hall was in held in December 1983, with the Council resuming ownership of the land to build the current day Post Office. Country Fire Brigade’s new fire station opened in High Street on 31st March 1940. The building comprised an appliance room for housing the fire engine and plant. The floor had been especially treated to enable dancing when the occasion warranted. There was a meeting room, a station-keeper’s bedroom and a repair shop. A shower room and modern kitchen were also included. The Fire station relocated to Smythe and Stanley Street corner which opened in 1977. The barrel was used in the Wodonga Court House as part of the selection process for jurors. It was a standard issue barrel used throughout Victoria. It was retrieved from the ruins of the court house which was destroyed by fire. It was then donated to the Wodonga Historical Society. The timber display stand was made and donated by Jake Tooley, a Wodonga Historical Society member, The Court House was situated in the Customs Store building alongside the Wodonga Police Station in 93 High Street. (The house where the Police Station was had originally been the home of the Customs Officer). In early 1964, the court house building was burnt beyond repair and furniture and other property destroyed. The cause of the fire was never found. The Police Station was lucky to survive but only because of the efforts of the local Fire Brigade. The Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway and an adjacent gate lodge were built at the Princess Street entrance in 1873.1 The imposing sandstone pillars and cast-iron gates impressed upon visitors the therapeutic and civilising vision of the asylum. The entrance opened onto a tree-lined drive (now known as Main Drive) which culminated in an elliptical carriageway in front of the main building. The gates were listed by Heritage Victoria in 2020. The citation reads: "The Former Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway consists of two 4.5 metre sandstone gate piers on bluestone bases on either side of a 5.5 metre vehicle entrance set back from the High Street pavement. The 1870s gate piers are of Barrabool sandstone and repairs during 2015-16 were undertaken with sandstone from English Town, Tasmania. The gate piers are highly decorative and feature oculi, triglyphs, dentils, corbeling and other ornamental work. Each gate pier incorporates a pedestrian archway with a cast-iron pedestrian swing gate. Two curved sections of cast-iron palisade fencing on rusticated bluestone blocks extend from the outer edges of the piers to a set of shorter sandstone pillars on the High Street pavement. Straight sections of cast-iron fence extend 4.5 metres ending at two bluestone pillars. Garden beds have been created within the curved sections of fencing, bordered by concreted bluestone and planted with shrubs."
