This small book, a prize given to George Powell in 1891, is believed to have come from the Warrnambool South State School. The signature in the book is that of John Sloss and he was the first Head Teacher of Warrnambool South State School which opened in 1877 and closed in 1995. The Powell families were in business in Warrnambool in the 1890s and the recipient of the prize may have been George Powell who was born in Warrnambool to George and Kate Powell in 1878. This book is of considerable interest because it appears to have been a prize awarded by Warrnambool South State School in 1891. The book is one of the few items we have connected to the early years of the Warrnambool South School. The book is a mixture of fact and fiction and the stories are meant to be instructive as well as entertaining.This is a hard cover book of 62 pages. The cover, dark green with a coloured floral pattern on the front and back, has been partly detached from its cloth binding. The book has several black and white sketches, with some pages missing at the beginning of the book. There are advertisements for other books on the inside of the covers. The pages and the cover are much stained. This cook book has been published by the Friends of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village Inc. This group do volunteer work at Flagstaff Hill, publicize the activities and historical collection at the Village and raise funds to carry out improvements and new installations. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was established in 1975, initially as a private venture sponsored by a group of businessmen in Warrnambool but it was later taken over by the Warrnambool City Council. It operates as an historical park and a tourist venture every day of the year except Christmas Day and has a night Sound and Light Show called ‘Shipwrecked’. The historical collection at the Village features many important shipwreck relics from the area, with the most important being the ‘Loch Ard’ ceramic peacock. The cook book is a tribute to the local women of the past and there are many recipes collected from the ‘Grannies’ of yesteryear. The tea rooms at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village are called ‘Stella Maris’ (Latin for ‘Star of the Sea’) and call to mind both the maritime heritage of the area and the name of the Australian Catholic Missions to Seamen which still operates. This book is of interest as a product of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It has been edited by John Lindsay who was one of the founders of Flagstaff Hill in 1975 and is today a Life Member and Helen Sheedy who has also been connected with the administration of the Village in the past. This book belonged to Agnes Swinton (b.1900). She was the daughter of John and Charlotte Swinton of Warrnambool. Her father, John, was the fifth son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and established a store in Timor Street. The Swinton family still operates a commercial business in the same street and the name ‘Swinton’ is well-known in Warrnambool. Agnes’ sister, Doris had a distinguished military career in World War Two and was a long-term Matron of the Warrnambool Hospital. This book is of considerable interest as it belonged to a member of the Swinton family which has been connected with Warrnambool’s history since the 1850s. This is a leather-covered book of 216 pages, plus a Supplement of 12 pages. The text is printed in two columns to a page. The front cover has gold lettering printed into the leather. The seller of these items was A.L.V. Jenkins who was a bookseller and stationer in Warrnambool and obviously also sold miscellaneous goods such as spectacles. It is known that Mr Jenkins was in Warrnambool in 1910. The type of glasses suggest early 20th century use. These items are of interest as examples of spectacles used over a hundred years ago. They are also one of the few items we have connected to the business of A.L.V. Jenkins.This is a pair of spectacles with the glass intact and with gold metal rims, nose and side pieces and screws. They are in a brown leather case with a cardboard lining and a slot in the leather to insert the leather tongue that acts as a closing device. The leather is slightly worn and torn. ‘A.L.V. This cup, saucer and plate are part of a tea set. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. There is a small crack on the side of the cup and the handle has been broken and mended. .2 The saucer is glazed on both sides with a small fault in the middle. This book was a prize from Warrnambool High School and donated by Mrs J.P. McMeekin. Warrnambool High School was established in 1907 and merged in the 1990s with Warrnambool North Technical School to form Warrnambool College. Roy Andrews was the Head Master of Warrnambool High School from 1940 to 1947. The McMeekins were early settlers in Warrnambool with family members in the 19th century working for the Shire of Warrnambool and operating a produce store in Warrnambool. This book is of minor interest as it is connected to Warrnambool High School, the McMeekin family and Roy Andrews.This is a hard cover book of 277 pages. These documents relate to the sale of land in Merri Street Warrnambool in 1959 by Swintons Pty Ltd of Warrnambool. The buyer of the land was George O’Grady, a Warrnambool baker. The land sold for £4000 and there was a shed on the land (called the ‘Office’) which George O’Grady indicated he wished to be included in the sale. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, china and glassware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. After William Swinton died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling clothing, furnishings and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding shop in Timor St Warrnambool.These items are of some interest as being connected to the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. They will be of interest to researchers. The Bright-Tawonga Road was built in 1896, connecting the Ovens and Kiewa valleys. The article gives an description of the event.The Bright - Tawonga road connected Tawonga to the larger town of Bright and the closest railway service. This road provided the Upper Kiewa Valley with access to larger markets, alternative transport and increased facilities not available in the Kiewa Valley in the early, pre SEC days. This electric washing machine was typical of the machines in the homes of Mt Beauty during the 1950's. This one has a wringer attached enabling the washing to be pushed through squeezing the water out after washing.Mt Beauty township was constructed in the early 1950s with electricity connected. Residents were employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and worked on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Metal green cylinder standing on 4 roller coasters. Cylinder has 3 sections - bottom short & yellow, the rest divided into 2, each section is held by a strip of steel bracing. The top section of the cylinder is hollow with a stainless steel metal agitator with 3 'wings'. The cylinder has a rotatable switch on the outside and a moveable knob. Opposite on the outside is a metal pipe widening to the wringer which hangs above the cylinder. The green wringer has 2 cloth covered cylinders that can be separated by moving knobs. A flat stainless steel curved flat surface comes out at an angle below the cloth cylinder. An electric cord is attached. Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). £5000 was to be raised in shares of five shillings and one shilling each. The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grasmere district. This receipt is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has that is connected to the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is a buff-coloured 1899 receipt for William Robinson who has paid six shillings and threepence for part payment of his shares in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The receipt has black printing and black-ink handwriting. There is one stamp of the Manager ‘H.S. Dickson’ and another of ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company No Liability’. This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. This card is one that was given to those who were designated to hold the tassels of the pall at a funeral conducted by Beattie and Phillips of Warrnambool. A pall was a cloth used to cover a casket or coffin at a funeral. The pall often had four or more tassels on the edges and these people, usually men, would hold the tassels when the coffin was being carried into the church and out of the church. The pall was removed before burial. It was also in some services unfolded and folded in a ceremonial manner when it was placed on the coffin and when it was removed. Other men would have been designated as pallbearers to carry the coffin to and from the church. The firm of Beattie and Phillips was commenced in Warrnambool in the 1860s, by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips, initially in Koroit Street and after 1928 in Fairy Street. James Beattie, the son of Christopher, was the proprietor from 1896 to 1945 when James Leahy took over but traded for some years as Beattie and Phillips. The business was sold in 2000 and an undertaking business still operates from the same premises. The other two cards relate to part of the main mourning party who would have been allocated seats in the funeral vehicles These are very interesting cards as it is a great example of funeral practices 70 to 80 years ago. The practices may in many cases be the same today but cards such as these are no longer in use. It is also important as items connected with Beattie and Phillips, one of the two best-known undertaking businesses in Warrnambool’s history.This are three small buff-coloured lightweight cards given to those at funerals who were designated p[laces or parts in the service. This is a program of the Centenary Procession that took place in Warrnambool in 1947 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the city’s founding in 1847. It was originally intended to celebrate the 100th anniversary in 1940 but these celebrations were postponed because of World War Two. In 1947 centenary celebrations were held but on a less lavish style. 1947 was a more appropriate year as 1847 was the year of the first land sales for Warrnambool and the arrival of the first European settlers in the town. The 1947 celebrations included a Grand Procession which was estimated to have been watched by 20,000 people. A similar number saw the bonfire and fireworks display in Albert Park the same evening. The celebrations lasted a week and included a choral thanksgiving festival in the Botanic Gardens, a massed band display and a ‘Warrnambool Can Make It’ exhibition of local manufactures. The well-known historian and Town Clerk at the time, Henri Worland took a prominent role in the organizing of the celebrations. This little booklet is of considerable importance because it contains a short description of the floats and the names of those connected with the various floats of the Warrnambool Centenary Procession of 1947. It not only gives us a better idea of what and who were in the procession but it now enables us to better label the many photographs we have of this procession and to identify the people in the photographs. The program is a valuable source of information for historians. It also is a good example of the type of celebratory procession that was popular 70 years ago. This is a paper program of the Warrnambool 1947 Centenary procession. It has four pages and a buff-coloured cover. The front cover has a sepia-toned photograph of the first car purchased in Warrnambool (1906) and on the back cover there is an advertisement for Lane’s Bus Services. The inside front cover has an advertisement for Guyett and Sons Furniture Store and there are other advertisements throughout the pages. The printed text on buff-coloured paper gives details of the 29 floats in the ‘Mechanized’ Section and of the 27 floats in the ‘Back to the Horse Pageant’ Section. These items come from the house "BIRCHWOOD" in Koroit Street, Warrnambool belonging to Dr. Angus and family. Dr. William Roy Angus (1901-1970) practised in Warrnambool from 1939 to 1970. In his later years Dr. Angus was an important ophthalmologist. He was prominent in Warrnambool in both medical and community affairs. The Angus home "BIRCHWOOD" at 214 Koroit Street (the site of the Warrnambool Police station today) was noted for its beautiful garden, lawns and croquet court and used as a meeting place and entertainment centre for vice-regal personnel and community organisations.These items are of considerable interest as they are connected to a well known doctor in Warrnambool and a notable house..1,.2,.3 These are three wooden door plates with a fine ridged front and a curved top and base. Thes two documents deal with the purchase and sale of land near Warrnambool by Thomas Simpson. The first document, called a Grant by Purchase, is dated 1852 and shows that Thomas Simpson purchased from the Crown, Allotment 146 (22 acres two roods) adjoining the property of Wollaston on the Merri River and the Mortlake Road, north of Warrnambool. The cost was 90 pounds. The second document is dated 1853 and shows that Thomas Simpson sold this Merri River allotment of 22 acres to Eliza Bromfield, in conjunction with her husband, John Davenport Bromfield, for the sum of 110 pounds. The property of Wollaston was owned by the Manifold family and in the 1850s was leased to William Simpson, the brother of Thomas who had an adjoining property called Wooramoota. John Davenport Bromfield was a Colac farmer who played a prominent part in the early history of that town. His brother James Astley Bromfield, an early chemist in Warrnambool is important in Warrnambool's history.These two items are of considerable significance because they are amongst the earliest legal documents we have connected to Warrnambool's history and because they concern three early pioneers of the district. The Cutty Sark sailing ship was a popular model-making ship. It was a British clipper ship built originally for the China- England tea trade and was one of the last and fastest tea clippers. From 1883 to 1895 it was used to carry wool from Australia to England and held many records for speed during that time. Since 1954 the ship has been on display at Greenwich, England. The model has an etched inscription indicating that it was made by Herman Richter and so it is presumed that he was the maker of this model. A model of the Cutty Sark was made by his father, Edward Richter using wood from the Enterprise wrecked in Lady Bay and that model was in the old Warrnambool Museum. This information was in a newspaper article at the time of Edward Richter’s death. This Herman Richter model may be a copy of his father’s model. The Richters have been prominent in Warrnambool’s history, beginning with Henry Richter who came to Warrambool in the 1850s and worked in the Western Brewery and was licensee of the Royal Archer Hotel. His son Edward who died in 1937 was a prominent Warrnambool resident for 78 years. Herman, the son of Susan and Edward Richter was well-known as a model boat maker and maker of model boats in bottles.This model boat is of great interest because the ‘Cutty Sark’ was a well-known sailing ship and was important in Australia’s maritime history as a carrier to London of Australian wool in the 1880s and 90s. It is also of interest as it was made by a member of the Richter family, a prominent one in Warrnambool’s history with both Edward and his son Herman Richter producing many artefacts connected to Warrnambool’s history – model ships, violin-making, maritime paintings etc. This is the model of a three-masted ship with a hull painted in green and black with gold bands. The ship is mounted on a wooden stand and enclosed in a wooden box with a glass front. The box is varnished and has ornamental patterns in gold and blue on the top and sides. This milk bottle takes its name from the Tooram property near Allansford but the exact decade when this milk bottle was used has not been established. Tooram was established by John Allan when he came to the Allansford area in 1839/1840 with his brother William who established the property of Allandale in the same area. John Allan held the property of Tooram until the early 1860s, with several owners from that date on including John Orlebar, Thomas Palmer and the Owen family. The property was sub-divided in 1897 with the Uebergang family owning Tooram Park from 1912 to 1992. The Torram property was well-known in the late 19th and early 20th century for its cheese production.This bottle is of great interest as one connected with Tooram, a dairying property that was one of the earliest farm properties in the Warrnambool area, being established in the Allansford area in 1839/1840, before the town of Warrnambool was settled. This is a glass bottle with a moulded base and a metal and china stopper. This is a trophy awarded by an association of Friendly Societies in Warrnambool in 1933. Friendly or Benefit Societies have operated in Warrnambool since 1860 when the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge was formed. Benefit societies such as this were set up mainly for social reasons and to assist members in times of sickness or to provide insurance in case of illness or hardship. Other societies had specific aims such as the promotion of temperance or allegiance to a particular church or country. The Australian Natives Association (A.N.A.) the winner of this trophy was set up in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and it was an active society with regular meetings, discussion groups, lectures and campaigns for the social justice issues of the day. The A.N.A. in Australia was influential in promoting nationalism and campaigning for Federation. The A.N.A merged with the M.U.I.O.O.F some years ago and operates today as the benefit group, Australia Unity. The trophy won by A.N.A. in 1933 was for quoits, a popular indoor game in the 1930s and still played today, mainly on social occasions. This trophy is of interest as it dates from the 1930s and is connected with the Warrnambool Friendly Societies of the time and especially the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A.)This is an electro plated nickel silver cup with two side handles, a short stem and a round silver base. An inscription is on one side of the cup. This is a trophy given to a Warrnambool Football Association by Harry Pritchard. He was a Warrnambool businessman who had the Warrnambool Sports Depot store in Kepler Street in the 1920s. The trophy was for the winner of the Warrnambool Wards Football Association. This was a Junior Association promoted by the Warrnambool Football Club and it existed from 1924 to 1930. It was proposed that the four Council Wards, Hopkins, Victoria, Albert and Merri each had a football team but it is not clear if all had teams and how many teams from other areas took part in the competition. The Pritchard Cup records that the Hopkins Ward Football Team won the trophy in 1926 and that Allansford, a team outside of the four wards, won in 1927. The records of the Allansford Football Club go back to the 1890s. This cup is of considerable interest, firstly as an attractive trophy in its own right and secondly as a memento of a football association connected with the Warrnambool Council Wards. Both the Council Wards structure and the Wards football association no longer exist. This is a silver cup with two ornamental handles, a slender stem and a silver base. The cup has a lid with a knob in the middle. The cup, lid and base are all heavily etched and patterned with scrolls, leaves and flowers. There is an inscription on one side of the cup. The cup sits on a circular brown wooden base which has a cloth or paste mixture affixed to the bottom. The wooden section has two silver plaques with inscriptions. This ledger contains copies of specifications and accounts dating from 1927 to 1935 with some entries dating from 1950 and 1951. The accounts were issued originally from the office of John William Crawley Junior, a surveyor, architect and engineer in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers, working in that capacity or as Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The ledger was passed on to, and used by John Crawley’s son, Rolf, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. It then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private practice of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the ledgerThis ledger is of interest as it contains accounts connected to the work of John and Rolf Crawley, Shire of Warrnambool engineers in the early to mid 20th century. The information in the ledger will be of great interest to researchers.This is a hard cover book of 100 pages. The book is bound on the spine with dark red tape. Some of the pages are unused. The pages are ruled with red and blue lines and there are some loose pages. This trophy was given in 1872 by Richard Lane to the Villiers & Heytesbury Agricultural Association for the best four horses in waggon. The Villiers & Heytesbury Association was founded in 1854 with the first show held at Warrnambool in 1855. It still operates today as the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Richard Lane owned and operated the Commercial Hotel ( now the Whalers Hotel) in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. In 1872 Richard Lane was the chief figure in staging the first Warrnambool Winter steeple chase meeting that included the now famous Grand Annual Steeple Chase. He was a generous donor of trophies to the Warrrnambool races and the Warrnambool show. It appears that no one was awarded the trophy in 1872.This trophy is of considerable importance as it is connected to the prominent 19th Century Warrnambool hotel keeper and racing identity Richard Lane and to the early history of the Villiers & Heytesbury AssociationThis is a silver cup on a silver stand mounted on a wooden base. The cup and the silver stand are much ornamented with the stand representing a tree with the branches attached to the stem and projecting out. Portions of the branches are broken off and are loose inside the cup. The cup has two trees embossed and a relief of a wagon with a driver and four horses. The provenance of this hammer is unclear but it possible that it is the hammer found at ‘Guthrie’, a house in Merri Street, Warrnambool that was demolished. ‘Guthrie’ was the home of the Dickson family, prominent in Warrnambool business circles. James Dickson, with his friend John Cramond, established a store in Warrnambool in the mid 19th century and this department store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent business in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson’s son and his family lived at ‘Guthrie’ and the hammer may have belonged to the Dicksons or another family connected to that property. This hammer has a metal head and a wooden handle. This tin grease pot appears to have been hand soldered, possibly in one of the De Grandi cycle shops in Warrnambool. In 1897 Lou De Grandi started a partnership with Alf George in Warrnambool and a year or two later opened his own business at 68 Liebig Street and in 1905 moved to 84 Liebig Street. Lou De Grandi’s own Warrnambool cycle make was called the Champion and cycle sales and repairs were combined with an electroplating service. Another shop was opened in Fairy Street but this closed when a new shop was opened at the corner of Lava and Liebig Streets. In 1922 Lou’s son, Ern commenced his own cycle business in Timor Street and this shop later moved across the lane in the same street (1935). Ern retired in 1960 and his son Cyril continued on the business as a sports store catering for over 20 sports. This shop closed in 2011. This grease pot, rusted and primitive, is of interest as coming from the Ern De Grandi cycle and sports store in Timor Street, Warrnambool. The De Grandi family was connected with sports stores in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This is a metal pot or jug with a handle, a detached lid and a pouring lip. A thin piece of wire is attached to the sides and acts as a carrying handle. The pot is much rusted. This is an invitation to the launch of the conservation and publication project for the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. The invitation was sent out in the name of Lilian Foyle, the Warrnambool photographer and artist who produced the portraits and some of the sketches on the board. A person representing Lilian Foyle welcomed those who came to the launch. The Pioneer Honour Board, initiated by Edward Vidler, was first assembled in 1907 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. It has the portraits of 204 pioneer men of Warrnambool and district and is one of the best examples of a pioneer honour board in Victoria. It now requires extensive conservation work and an appeal has been launched to cover the cost of this. A publication with biographies of the 204 men is also being prepared. This invitation is of great interest as it is connected to the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board which is one of the most important historical items in the city of Warrnambool and a work of art in its own right.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper with black printing and a black and white photograph of Lilian Foyle. This whisky label comes from the bottler of the whisky, Tattersall’s Hotel, Warrnambool. This hotel, at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade, opened in 1866 and closed in 1996 and was a prominent hotel in Warrnambool during that time. Patrick King was the licensee from 1907 to 1909.This label is of some significance as one of the few labels we have connected to a Warrnambool hotel and one of the few mementoes of a prominent Warrnambool hotel, Tattersall’s. This is a small sheet of paper with gilt edging, lettering in white and black and some decoration which includes leaves and stalks of barley. One corner has been torn away. The Australian Red Cross was established in 1914 as part of the British Red Cross and the Warrnambool branch was established in the same year. The local Warrnambool branch volunteers were mainly women who held sewing meetings, organized parcels for the soldiers abroad during World War One, undertook First Aid courses to be of assistance in hospitals and raised funds for the Red Cross, especially the local branch and the Melbourne branch.
