LAUGHING WATERS WALK This excursion was a follow up to the Laughing Waters Story told to us by Jane Woollard at our Annual General Meeting in March 2013. It involved a walk commencing from the corner of Laughing Waters and Overbank Roads along Laughing Waters Road to its eastern end and returning partly over the same route - a total distance of about 2.5km. On the way we visited the two artist in residence properties to view the houses on them that are associated with Alistair Knox, Gordon Ford and others in the local mud brick and artistic community. This poster is representative of the tourism marketing that was used in the 1990's to promote the aesthetic beauty of the township of Mt Beauty thus the play on the words, Mt Beauty, The Name Says It All. The poster also promotes activities that are on offer to the visitor in Mt Beauty and the broader area. The poster is also significant as it shows the progression in marketing by the Alpine Shire and the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce from the early days of marketing Mt Beauty as a tourist destination. This poster is historically significant as it shows the style of tourism campaigns of the 1990's with the slogan "Mt Beauty The Name Says It All", which is a play on the name Mt Beauty and was promoted by the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce and the Alpine Shire. This slogan is no longer part of the tourism for the Alpine Shire and therefore is a good comparative example of previous tourism and current tourism campaigns. The Tawonga C.W.A. often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. Tawonga CWA branch commenced on 7th Feb. 1946. Prior to this the ladies would have been involved in supporting the war effort with knitted and spun items as described in this book. The branch often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. Getting together for the war effort would have succeeded in this aim perhaps encouraging the women to continue meeting under the banner of C.W.A.The Tawonga ladies would have been involved in assisting the war effort from home. Most of the ladies lived on remote farms so they may have got together, learnt together and felt happier while contributing to the war effort and supporting the men fighting overseas. Wool was available and easily made into useful items that could be shipped overseas. Mt Beauty Workman's Club was formed in 1945, re-built and opened in 1954 and again in 1962 and 1968. The Bowls club was founded in 1970 and later was affiliated with the Victorian Ladies' Bowling Association (VLBA) and the North Eastern District LBA in 1974. There were strict rules regarding the Bowlers' uniform.The Mt Beauty Workman's Club was built by the SECV in 1945 to service their employees on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. As Mt Beauty grew it became the centre of activity for residents including the Bowling Club. The Mt Beauty Wine and Dine club existed during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme as part of the social life. These cards were owned by Nesta Drew nee Cooper. The Celebrity Concert dated 20th April 1956 was held at the Community Centre Mt Beauty during the construction of the KHES.A good example of social activities partaken during the 1950s in the Upper Kiewa Valley during the construction of the KHES. The Tawonga District General Hospital published its Annual report and Statement of Accounts each year. It also acknowledged and published a 'List of Contributors'. The Tawonga District General Hospital was located at Tawonga before being moved to Mount BeautyA comparative history of the Tawonga District General Hospital in the years 1964 and 1976 with an insight into its activities and finances. There is also a comprehensive list of contributors which is also an indication of families living in the district at the time. Roper's Hut belonged to the Roper family who brought their cattle up onto the Bogong High Plains during summer. Their hut was visited and used by skiers and walkers. The log books kept a record of their visits over the years.The log books gave an insight into the activities of visitors, the weather, the frequency, etc. The case was a safe place for storage of these books.Light brown vinyl case with zip fastener around three sides and partly at the back on each side. There is a separate pocket at the top with a zip fastener. There is a flap to fasten the case across the centre top and a leather handle. The Tawonga post office was officially opened on 4th October 1879. It had several locations (mostly near the centre of town) over the years and several operators including local families such as the Ryders, the Drummonds, the Coads, the Hollonds and more recently the Talbots and Ryders.
