This is a flag awarded to the Premiers of the Warrnambool District Bowls Association for 1963-4. The members of the Warrnambool District Bowls Association are Timboon, Dennington, Koroit, Port Fairy, Terang, Lawn Tennis, City Memorial and Warrnambool Bowls Clubs. It is presumed that this flag was awarded to St. John’s Bowls Club as it was passed over from that club to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in 2014. St. John’s Bowls Club in Princess Street, Warrnambool was associated with the Warrnambool Presbyterian Church. It was formed in the 1930s and ceased to exist in 2013. This flag is of some interest as a memento of St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. This club was a well-known sporting club in the 20th and early 21st centuries in Warrnambool. Bowling is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a triangular-shaped cloth flag or pennant. It is dark blue with yellow lettering stitched on (Warrnambool District Bowls Association Premiers 1963-4). The base of the triangle has a white canvas folded binding in which is enclosed a plaited rope with a metal clip for attachment to a pole. The smallest section of the flag has been stitched over with black cloth. This association is a division of the West Coast Bowls Association and the members are the Bowls Clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Lawn Tennis Club, Mortlake, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool and City Memorial. This pennant was awarded for the premiers of 1975/76 and, as the pennant came from St.John’s Bowls Club (Presbyterian Church Warrnambool) it is presumed that this club was the winner of this pennant. St. John’s Bowls Club, in Princess Street, Warrnambool, was prominent in the 20th century but has now been disbanded (early 21st century) with the land sold in 2014. The maker of the flag, Evan Evans Pty Ltd, is a well-known Australian flag-making business. It was founded in 1877 and a member of the family was a co-designer of the Australian flag in 1901. This pennant is of some interest as it was awarded by the Warrnambool District Bowls Association to St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. As the St. John’s Club no longer exists it is an important memento of this Warrnambool sports club. Bowls is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a large triangular-shaped pennant from the Warrnambool District Bowls Association (1975-6). It is a white cloth pennant made in two sections with stitched hems on the edges and through the centre. The side holding the cord is made of thicker folded cloth with a white plaited cord inserted. The lettering is made of blue cloth and machine stitched on to the pennant. The material is nylon and wool. This book works through a number of exercises with photographs illustrating the exercises. It was owned by W R Angus who was a doctor in Warrnambool coming to the city in 1939. He served during the war as a general surgeon and after the war took up ophthalmology as a speciality. He was a member of the state council of the AMA. he was keenly interested in cultural and civic activities and served on a number of community groups during his time in Warrnambool. He died in Cairns in 1970. The book itself was written by Staff Sergt Alfred Moss and was a popular resource for exercising and body building in the early part of the 20th century. At one time he was known as the strongest man in the British army.A book that is linked to a well- known Warrnambool resident and professional. These books celebrate the 130th anniversary of the establishment of the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This Gallery is owned and operated by the Warrnambool City Council as a memorial to Sir David Fletcher Jones who was nationally known and a leading citizen in Warrnambool for many years as a businessman (Fletcher Jones and Staff) and as a philanthropist. The Warrnambool Art Gallery was founded in 1886 and is the third oldest institutional collection in Victoria and the fifth oldest in Australia. This book is of considerable interest as it reproduces many works of art from the Warrnambool Art Gallery, a highly significant collecting institute in Warrnambool. These are two copies of the book containing 130 reproductions of works of art (both in colour and in black and white) held at the Warrnambool Art Gallery. It is a soft cover book of 128 pages edited by Vanessa Gerrans. The cover designed by Ian Robertson has a white background and the shapes of the Warrnambool Art Gallery logo have been used as multi-coloured windows containing details of each of the 130 reproduced works. These are two administrative record books from the Warrnambool Town Council which took over from the Warrnambool Borough Council in 1883 and existed until 1918 when it became the Warrnambool City Council. .1 Warrnambool Town Council letter book dating from 1904 to 1918 containing copies of letters written by the Rate Collector, Thomas Beattie .2 Warrnambool Town Council Contract Book dating from 1902 to 1909. The Bank of Victoria was located at 7a Liebig Street, Warrnambool. The building still exists in 2023 as a part of the Quest apartments. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute was formed in 1859 and the first reading room opened in 1884. Responsibility for all activities of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute activities were formally handed over to the Warrnambool city Council on 27th July 1911. This Bank of Victoria Limited passbook documents credits and debits of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute & Free Library from December 1904 until 30th June 1911 just prior to the transfer to the Warrnambool City Council. This is a framed photograph showing a key event in Warrnambool's history - the proclamation by Sir Arthur Stanley of Warrnambool as a city in 1918. Warrnambool was the fifth non--metropolitan town in Victoria to be declared a city and a large crowd gathered outside the Town Hall to see this event. Sir Arthur Stanley (Lord Stanley of Alderley) was an English nobleman, Parliamentarian and soldier who was the Governor of Victoria from 1914 to 1920. The photographer was Arthur Jordan who, like his father Joseph, was a prominent photographer in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries and took many official photographs of civic affairs. The donor of the photograph, probably immediately after the event to the Warrnambool Museum at the time under the auspices of the Warnambool Mechanics' Institute, was George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Councillor and Mayor. This ledger comes from the Model Bakery business of G.W. Greaves, a baker and pastrycook In Allansford in the first half of the 20th century. Allansford is a township 10 kilometres east of Warrnambool, now incorporated into the City of Warrnambool. The ledger contains details of the Greaves business sales of goods, mostly bread, from 1946 to 1948 and includes the names of the customers, the orders and the moneys owing. The bakery served many nearby areas including Wangoom, Hopkins Point, Cudgee, Mepunga, Naringal and Lake Glllear. This ledger is of interest as it illustrates the size of the Allansford bakery and contains many names of people in the area in the 1940s, making it a valuable research object.This is a ledger with a black cover and leather coverings at the corners and a brown leather spine. The red label on the spine has gold lettering and ornamental edges. The inside of the cover has a red mottled pattern and has tape and string stitching. This map was printed in 1925 and contains the Warrnambool Harbour alterations proposed by the Warrnambool Harbour Committee incorporating the original designs of Captain Menzies, the Warrnambool Harbour Master and the City Engineer, Mr A. Lavercombe. The main features of the proposal were the extension of the Eastern Wall to almost enclose the harbour and a basin in Lake Pertobe. The design was to be placed before the Victorian Royal Commission on the Outer Ports which was established partly to examine the allegations of unsatisfactory work carried out in Warrnambool when the Breakwater was extended 300 feet in 1914 and also to make recommendations regarding all regional ports. The Warrnambool Breakwater was completed in 1890 but failed to provide the shipping conditions needed to continue Warrnambool as a viable port. Many plans and proposals for port improvement such as this one were produced in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century with the port officially closed in the 1940s. Still today the Breakwater and Warrnambool Harbour conditions remain a source of contention.This map is significant as it shows a 1925 design for Warrnambool Harbour hitherto little-known. It also has markings showing land sites of the time (BayView Hotel, Woollen Mill etc.)This is a map made of thick yellow paper pasted onto a cloth backing. It has two cloth tags at the top for tying up the map when folded. It appears to be a hand-drawn map copied with printed material added. The map is shaded green and red in some areas. Attached by nails to the map are wooden frames, rounded at the bottom and partly curved at the top. The map is torn and partly detached at the top. This stencil has been made to imprint the label, 'Britain Relief Appeal' on to parcels and packages sent to Britain in the late 1940s and the early 1950s from the City of Warrnambool. Britain endured severe rationing of food, clothing, petrol and furniture from 1940 because of the outbreak of World War Two and this rationing continued in some form after the war up to 1954. Australian towns and cities established organizations such as Food For Britain and sent regular parcels of food and clothing to Britain during those times. The British Relief Appeal in Warrnambool (via the Warrnambool Food For Britain committee) was sponsored by the Warrnambool City Council, Toc H, Australian Red Cross, and various local charities and businesses. The Warrnambool & District Historical Society has in its collection over 100 letters sent by grateful British recipients of these parcels to the senders, the employees of the local Warrnambool business, Swintons Stores.This stencil is of interest as a memento of the effects of rationing in Britain in post-World War Two times and the close ties that existed between Australian towns and cities and their British counterparts.This is a rectangular-shaped metal stencil, originally painted black, with cut-out letters in the centre. These two buttons are tailors' buttons for clothing made in Warrnambool. The brown one is from the firm of Frederick Williamson who had a tailoring business at 157-159 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. His father Edward had started the tailoring business with a shop in Timor Street in the second half of the 19th century. Frederick Williamson was a Warrnambool City Councillor on three occasions (1924-1930; 1934-1939; 1942 -1945) and Mayor 1942-1943. The black button came from the Liebig Street, Warrnambool clothing and haberdashery store of Cramond and Dickson who employed tailors and dressmakers to make clothing to order. John Cramond and James Dickson opened their Warrnambool store in 1855 and it was a dominant business in Warrnambool for 119 years, closing in 1974. This is a match box holder that has been produced as a souvenir of Warrnambool. It was possibly made to commemorate the gazetting of Warrnambool as a city in 1918. The holder features the Warrnambool crest which was designed in the early 1850s by the first teacher of the Warrnambool National School, John MacDonald. He also suggested the motto, ‘By These We Flourish’. The crest has been modified over the ensuing years.This is an important souvenir of Warrnambool as it is a high quality one and features the crest of the City of Warrnambool as used early in the 20th century. This is a gold-coloured piece of metal with the ends folded or sheeted over to form a rectangle with a flat base and an open top to hold a packet of matches. The front of the holder has attached a metal image of the crest of the City of Warrnambool. The image is in gold, white and dark blue. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of the competitions held in Warrnambool by the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association. One of the sponsors of this competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer who had his head office and main factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was the Bates Cup and it was probably donated by Harold Bates, a property developer who was a Warrnambool City Councillor from 1941 to 1945. This trophy was for the deck quoits competition. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops on to a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruise ships from the 1920s on. This is a 1968 newsletter of the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group. It gives information on the forthcoming Summer School of Drama held in Melbourne, the group’s Dinner Dance, a play reading of the play, ‘J.B.’ and the group’s next production, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The secretary of the group at the time was Ian Hill. Warrnambool has had a great number of community drama societies and groups since the 1860s and the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group has been putting on local stage productions since 1948. Two prominent members of the group were Cyril and Joyce Hayward. Today the group is called the Warrnambool Theatre Company. This newsletter is of interest as an example of an early newsletter from a prominent and important amateur theatre group in Warrnambool. These are two sheets of foolscap paper folded in three places for postage purposes. One page has the postal address of the recipient, two pages have black typing and one page is blank. This book belonged to Charles Rogers. Captain Charles Rogers was an Australian Army officer in the 4th Lighthorse Regiment. He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was well-known as a Warrnambool resident in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and was often seen on horseback leading parade and celebrations in the city. He as a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This book is of interest, firstly as an example of a military handbook for cavalry officers and secondly because it belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, an army officer (Lighthorse regiment) who was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 198 pages. It has a yellow cover with black printing on the spine. Most of the pages are white, with several pink pages at the beginning and the end. This ceremonial regalia belonged to Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse Regiment). He wore this regalia when he was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army identity and he and his horse frequently led parades and celebrations in the city. He was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the regalia worn by Australian military personnel in the 1930s. They are also good mementos of Charles Rogers, a notable personality in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.1 This is a piece of ceremonial regalia worn over the shoulder and called an aigullette. It has a plaited silver-coloured cord ending in silver metal tagged points. The metal points or stakes are highly decorated. The cords also have an accompanying smaller silver-coloured cord and another attachment of cord with an end of interwoven material in the shape of an elongated pear or acorn. The item is a little tarnished. .2 These are epaulettes worn on the shoulder. One is attached to the aigullette and the other is detached. This glass is a souvenir of the awarding to Warrnambool of the title of Victoria’s Premier Town for the period 1979-1982. The Premier Town Awards were given by the Victorian Government to the town or city that best protected and enhanced its environment. Warrnambool won the award in 1958, 1979-1982 and 1988-1991.This glass is retained as an example of the type of souvenir sold locally to celebrate the winning of Victoria’s Premier Town Award. Edward Williamson came to Warrnambool in the 1860s and set up a tailoring business. His son Frederick joined his father in the tailoring business and from the 1920s on was operating in Liebig Street. Frederick Williamson was a city councillor on three occasions and was the Warrnambool Mayor in 1942 and 1943.This coat has considerable significance as an example of the tailoring business of Frederick Williamson. The Williamson family operated as tailors in Warrnambool for over 70 years.This is a black cotton cloth lady's coat. This is an invitation to the launch of the conservation and publication project for the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. The invitation was sent out in the name of Lilian Foyle, the Warrnambool photographer and artist who produced the portraits and some of the sketches on the board. A person representing Lilian Foyle welcomed those who came to the launch. The Pioneer Honour Board, initiated by Edward Vidler, was first assembled in 1907 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. It has the portraits of 204 pioneer men of Warrnambool and district and is one of the best examples of a pioneer honour board in Victoria. It now requires extensive conservation work and an appeal has been launched to cover the cost of this. A publication with biographies of the 204 men is also being prepared. This invitation is of great interest as it is connected to the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board which is one of the most important historical items in the city of Warrnambool and a work of art in its own right.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper with black printing and a black and white photograph of Lilian Foyle. This booklet was written by the Rev. J. E. (Eric) Owen in response to the campaign regarding the playing of Sunday sport in Warrnambool in the 1960s. The specific point of contention was the playing of football on Warrnambool City Council-managed grounds. The article written by the Rev. Owen concluded that there was nothing inherently wrong with the playing of Sunday sport. The Rev. Eric Owen served as the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Church in Warrnambool from December 1960 to 1965, dying in office in the May of 1965. Today Sunday sport, both organized and recreational, is an acceptable and common occurrence. This booklet is of interest as one written by a local Warrnambool person in the 1960s and as a memento of the time when the playing of Sunday sport was a contentious issue. This candle holder was probably home made and hung in a kitchen where the candles would be accessible and lit from the wood stove or a fireplace. Candles for lighting would have been in widespread use in Warrnambool until the mid 1920s when electric lighting was introduced and would have been used for a couple of decades after this in areas out of towns and cities where there was no electric lighting. This item is retained as an example of a household item from the early 20th century. It will be useful for display and school visits.This is a rectangular-shaped wooden container with a fitted lid. The container has been painted white but is now peeling in places. The top of the container has an extra wooden piece at the top with a hole in the middle for attaching a cord or string to hang the item on a door or wall. The word ‘candles’ is incised into the side of the container. Inside the container (originally space for six candles) are the remains of three candles with one other candle almost intact and another one intact with a wick.
