Murray Comrie Collection. A page from People newspaper, of June 26, 1966 with article titled 'A Story Without Names' by Tom O'Mara. Describes a story (myth?) supposedly well-known in Tarnagulla. The story is about a child which was disfigured by her father who was being held in a lockup. He was said to have reached between the prison bars and bitten her face in retaliation for being betrayed to police by the child's mother. The author notes that no-one can verify the story or provide names of the participants. This girl's white cotton sun-hat has been made at home by a mother determined to get the maximum usage from the garment. The hat has been simply made with a plain crown for the child's day-to-day use. Mary Russell brought household items to Australia from England in 1934. Her mother, Elizabeth Russell used the writing desk that was originally given to her mother, Agnes Marian Byrne when she went to boarding school. Agnes used it all her life. Desk damaged by a visiting child who forced the desk closed/open at one point. Estimated that Agnes went to school about 1830'sA square wooden box with brass inlay decoration on lid and front around lock. Hinged lid opens to be a writing surface of velvet. At lock end, groove for pens and small well for ink bottle. Key (not to be used) is in the ink well. Base lined with green hessian glued on. Lid and base angled to give sloping writing surface. This paperweight was created as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for SOGC (Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada) in 1994.Marble paperweight in the shape of a rounded square. Front of paperweight is engraved with a head and shoulders image of two Inuit figures, possibly a mother a child, wearing one coat between them and peering out of the same hood. The paperweight is signed by the artist at bottom right of front of paperweight. Back of paperweight is engraved with the text 'SOGC/1944-1994'. It is known that we choose our family before we are born, for me I get a great deal of comfort knowing this, for me it is very true. I was adopted at birth, I have always known this. My mum is my best friend, she is my confidant in times of sadness and pain. She is my guiding light in times when I have lost my way. I share everything with her as she does me. She is my hero, especially now that I have my own children, seeing the sacrifices she has made along the way and is still sacrificing so much for our wellbeing. I celebrate her daily for all she does, we celebrate together the wonderful things that we achieve on a daily basis no matter how small they appear to be. She is always there for me – how privileged I am to have her in my life. I met my birth mother once I had children of my own, I understood what a sacrifice it must have been to give me up. The first words that I muttered out of my mouth when I met her was, “I am so proud of you, and thank you”. She was quite baffled by this and then I explained. Through your unconditional sacrifice I have been given a wonderful life, the doors have been opened to me in so many ways. I have been loved unconditionally and have had the devotion of my mum and dad behind me all the way – how blessed I have been. The dual figures that I have weaved signify my mothers, my mum is holding a babe in arms a gift from the universe. My birthmother is present within this figure, her face is at the back of my mums head. She wasn’t physically there during my many years without her, yet spiritually she never left. This bonnet could have been part of a Christening outfit which matches the same style of "KVHS 0235" The quality of the garment and the fashion style it represents is both historical, and is of the fashion in that era. It has Christian religious implications and values of the time frame of regional life in the early 1900s. It is hand made possibly by the mother of the child being christened. The bonnet was probably worn at a christening in one of the Kiewa Valley churches (denomination unknown). The importance of the event to family and friends is shown by the quality of the garment.
