Standing near them is a bearded man holding a bullock team leader's whip. ...Transportation of goods and material by bullock teams was a common feature of life in nineteenth century Australia. Bullock teams could comprise more than twenty bullocks to haul very large and heavy loads. They were the equivalent of large trucks on the roads of today. Many Australian country towns have very wide main streets to allow for large bullock teams to turn without having to unharness and reharness the animals. The bullock driver in this photo is thought to be of James Densley, aka Charlie (the ) Carter, who lived at Hopetoun, east of the township of Bacchus Marsh. He worked as a carrier with a bullock team in the later years of the nineteenth century. He had a reputation as a sober man who never used bad language. (Williams, W. A History of Bacchus Marsh and its Pioneers. 1836-1936. Reproduced 2015 BMDHS.p. 78.) James Densley died in 1905, supposed to be over the age of ninety.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. This one is kept safe by being attached to a fob chain. ...It had the shape of a locket or of a watch and was often worn on a chain and kept by gentlemen in a waist coat pocket. ...Coins are one of the worlds oldest types of currency, though the worlds first coins were very basic . They first began to appear in the ancient world and by the time of the Roman and Greek civilisations, coins were being issued in a range of denominations with quite sophisticated designs. With coins being used instead of older systems such as barter, people needed a way to carry and store their money and the coin holder appeared on the scene. Sovereign cases were small portable boxes usually in cylindrical shape and made from various metals with snap shut covers to contain the coin. This one is kept safe by being attached to a fob chain. ... The hook would be attached to the end of a chain or rope around a heavy load such as a pallet or container. ...The hook would be attached to the end of a chain or rope around a heavy load such as a pallet or container. ...A cast iron hook was made for lifting heavy loads in a marine or warehouse environment. The hook would be attached to the end of a chain or rope around a heavy load such as a pallet or container. The other end may have been joined to a pulley or crane for lifting and moving it around. The inscription on the hook shows the SWL or Safe Working Load as 3 Ton. The SWL was used in the industry for many years to rate safe loads but it is no longer used to identify the maximum capacity of equipment. In 2002 the Australian Standard AS 1418 for Cranes, Hoists and Winches changed, and the term Safe Work Load was changed to Rated Capacity, which was defined differently. The hook represents the equipment needed on a ship or at a port, railyard, transport depot or warehouse in the 19th and 20th centuries to move cargo and loads. The inscription of SWL on the hook is significant for its use as a guide for many years to work out the weight of the load the hook could safely hold. However, time and experience have led to a change in Australian Standards and the load is now measured by another formula that gives the load's Rated Capacity.Hook; large iron hook with a ring formed in the top. These photographs capture only a small part of the No. 1 RAAF Stores Depot that one of Australia’s major wartime and post‑war defence logistics centres, representing the scale, organisation, and industrial capability required to support the Royal Australian Air Force from 1945 to 1993. ...No. 1 RAAF Stores Depot in Braybrook (often called the Tottenham RAAF Stores Depot) was one of the most important defence facilities in Melbourne’s west, a massive wartime logistics base built in 1944–45 and operated until 1993. The site expanded significantly after WWII, adding: RAAF Police Dog Training Centre (established 1962), supply‑officer training facilities, accommodation blocks, mess halls, chapels, gyms and sports grounds which transformed the depot into a self‑contained military community. It shaped Braybrook’s industrial landscape, employed hundreds of locals, and played a central role in Australia’s WWII and post‑war supply chain. These photographs capture only a small part of the No. 1 RAAF Stores Depot that one of Australia’s major wartime and post‑war defence logistics centres, representing the scale, organisation, and industrial capability required to support the Royal Australian Air Force from 1945 to 1993. Established during the critical final years of the Second World War, the depot consolidated dozens of scattered storage sites into a single purpose‑built facility, demonstrating the Commonwealth’s shift toward modern, centralised military supply systems. Its extensive warehouses, rail sidings, and specialised training areas illustrate mid‑20th‑century defence planning and the functional architectural style of the Department of Works. The depot played a vital role in national logistics, handling equipment, clothing, barracks stores, demobilisation materials, and returned overseas supplies. It was also a major employer in Melbourne’s western suburbs, shaping the social and economic life of Braybrook, Sunshine, and Tottenham for nearly five decades. The presence of the RAAF Police Dog Training Centre further highlights the site’s operational diversity and long‑term importance to defence readiness. Although most of the depot has been demolished, the surviving guard house and office block on Ashley Street remain as rare physical evidence of a once‑vast military complex. The depot’s legacy endures in the urban form of Braybrook and in the community memory of the thousands who worked there. Its significance lies in its contribution to Australia’s defence history, its impact on the development of Melbourne’s west, and its representation of large‑scale wartime infrastructure.R.A.A.F.
