This document records the legal status of 'Junior Legacy, Melbourne' in 1952. Melbourne Legacy has had name changes over the years. In September 1952 Junior Legacy Melbourne was incorporated. Under the provisions of the Companies Act 1938, it was registered as a company with limited liability without the need for 'limited' in its' name (see page 1). Another copy of this document was stored in the 'History of Legacy' files as 'H17' (01490) when the original archive project was undertaken by Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong.A record of a former entity of Melbourne Legacy. The document covers the year of 1941. Mention is made of the restrictions and difficulties (petrol rationing, scarcity of paper to name some) that occurred with running a wartime economy, and trying to implement the social welfare programme of Legacy. In particular, The Welfare Committee. Despite the difficulties of the time, Legacy not only continued its work but expanded the programme e.g. the establishment of a Legacy Dental Clinic in Collins St, Melbourne. The document also notes with some sadness the death of some Junior Legatees due to war service, and the realisation that the work of Legacy will need to be expanded due to World War 2. Legacy Probation Officers paid tribute to the never failing support of the Police department. To quote, "In all cases the Police were just as anxious as we to save the boys from the Reformatory of Gaol." There are many documents styled as 'The work of 19XX' so it was a way legatees reported the main events of the year. Many were put into the original archive started by Frank Doolan and were labelled with the letter 'H' to signify History.A record that Legatees were recording the major events of the year in a report for future reference. This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service. Approval received from the Forests Commission of Victoria to purchase two tons of firewood for use at Holmbush at 1267 Burke Road. It shows that wood was a rationed resource during the war and approval was required from the Forest Commission before acquisition. Letter dated 10 March 1943 to the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works about the retention of an internal water closet at 1267 Burke Road, Kew (Holmbush). Legacy accepted responsibility for any trouble which may arise through this fitting which was not directly supplied from a Storage Tank. A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. A photo of 8 boys in a camp kitchen cleaning up after a meal. From the inscriptions it is Somers Camp in January 1968. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. In 1983 the Yarra Valley group purchased a wheel chair for Anne Smythe, a Junior Legatee, the donation was photographed by the Leader Newspaper group, so perhaps it was used in a promotional news story at the time. An example of work done by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Brian Murray with Legacy in his role as patron. The Governor and his wife Lady Murray attended the Anzac commemoration ceremony for students that Legacy hold annually. Date was 1984 when Legatee Dean was president of Legacy. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. A document that was part of a folder about the running of the President's Fund that was created in 1932 "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The document summarises the history of a fund that allowed President's to make discretionary payments to worthy causes without need to have it approved. It was written by Legatee Kemsley, a long standing legatee. The second page of the letter was located and added later which shows he wrote it in 1985 (02728). The fund was credited to the late Legatee Walter Berry of the domestic and building supplies firm, Henry Berry and Co. from his late father's estate. This one page document seems incomplete as it doesn't fully explain the fund's creation. From other documents it is shown the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust made annual donations of up to £1,000 to Legacy for use in the Fund. See also item 01527 for another summary of the fund's history. A planting of a pine tree at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on 17 April 1991. Legacy had a programme of donating trees grown from seeds from Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows 4 Gallipoli veterans standing by the newly planted pine tree. One shows President John Sullivan with the shovel. Also with representatives of John Allison / Monkhouse who provided the plaques for the tree. A different photo was used in the July 1991 issue of the Widows' Newsletter (later called The Answer) and explained two small Lone Pine trees were donated in appreciation of the care extended by the hospital to widows and dependents of veterans. Special guests included WW1 Gallipoli veterans who had revisited Gallipoli for its 75th Anniversary. White paper labels say: "Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' Lives on. Two lone pine trees, propagated from Gallipoli Lone Pines, were presented on behalf of Melbourne Legacy to the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital by the President, Legatee John Sullivan. "Gallipoli veterans were special guests at the presentation." The Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital has a proud history of caring for Veterans and War Widows. From the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. This may be part of that project (see the Lone Pine brochure at 00593) or subsequent propagation undertaken by Legacy. Melbourne Legacy’s Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation, presentation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' alive – its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others. The Trust was set up as a memorial to Sir Stanley Savige. The object of the Trust was to further the work of the Junior Legacy movement in Melbourne. Over the first ten years of the trust 248 families were assisted. Includes original Trust Deed, much financial information, contributors and amounts contributed.
