Historical Documentation: 1851 - Portion 91 purchased by Edward Glynn; 1888 - The Harp of Erin Estate (which included Section 91) offered for sale; 1896 - The area now known as Stradbroke Park was bisected by a creek that flowed from the Yarra via Hay's Paddock (q.v.) and extended through to Burke Road; 1943 - W.D. Birrell, Town Clerk of Kew, proposed that the creek be filled and a reserve created; 1954 - Entire area designated as 'open space' and named 'Stradbroke Park'. The line of the creek that ran through the Park created a further reserve on the north side of High Street, now known as 'Harrison Reserve'. Existing Condition: The park is largely of mown grass that has mature trees set into it It is possible that a number of these are remnant of the original vegetation, while there are also a number of exotic trees introduced, particularly at the northern end of the park. The 1988 ‘Kew Conservation Study’ recorded that “The first ...The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). Plan No.1568 covers the area bounded by Cotham Road, John Street, Sackville Street, and Edward Street. Alfred Street and Rowland Street are in shown in the middle of the plan. The two most notable buildings shown are ‘St Helliers’, the home of the Dumaresq family, and St Hilary’s Church and school. While the colours used to indicate St Hilary’s are grey as in other civic/public buildings, the first St Hilary’s Anglican Church was at this stage constructed in weatherboard. At the left of the plan, facing Sackville Street is a house named ‘Glencara’. The 1988 ‘Kew Conservation Study’ recorded that “The first documentary evidence of this house comes from Rate Books which record that in 1893 a Mrs Treadway was the owner of this building with an N.A.V. of £81? At that date the occupier of the house was Charles B. Kelly, a clerk, while by 1910 Kelly had become the owner of the property described in that year ‘as a six-roomed stone, brick and wood house with stables and outbuildings’”. The Kew Conservation Study (1988 ...One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. 99 Princes sStreet (1 Fellows Street) was built by the architects Oakden, Addison and Kemp. The Kew Conservation Study (1988) noted that: Erected By Bennie And Olivers, these Two Attached Houses Attracted An Initial Construction N.A.V. of £260. The houses were originally owned and occupied by the architect Henry Kemp, however Kemp appears not to have lived there long because, while he retained ownership for at least a decade, by 1891 George Martin, merchant and bank manager, was recorded as the tenant of No.1 Fellows Street. At that date the N.A.V. for this individual building was £83 and Kemp remained the owner of both properties until at least 1910. Kemp had arrived in Australia in 1886 and this was therefore one of the first of the many buildings he was to design in Melbourne. While late Victorian in date, the houses are of a unified design that is an interesting precursor of the Edwardian architecture produced by Kemp. Somewhat awkwardly composed with steep gables, a rectangular castellated tower and slated single storeyed verandahs projecting from the overall boxlike form, the house contains features common to the 1880s such as the use of polychromy in the brickwork and slates cladding the roof. The building departs from the norm of the time with the use of terracotta tile ridge cappings, and strapwork to the corbelled chimneys.The slides represent a snapshot in time of built architecture in Kew, much of which has changed in the forty-plus period since they were created.Colour positive transparency (slide) of the pair of residences on the corner of Princess Street and Fellows Street in Kew. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72 2. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Denbigh until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence...' \ 'as auctioned to Carlington George Edmund Marston 5, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. First class orchard and flower garden. The paddocks laid with English grasses and drained... .' (Sanderson P, City of Kew Urban Conservation Study, Volume 2, 1988)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.The front entrance of Wimba in Cotham Road, Kew. The entrance is flanked by two polygonal bay windows, and a verandah with a concave corrugated iron roof returns around three facades, and accentuates the projections of the windows. The solid render parapet is very ornate and tall for the date of construction. It has panels of decoration along it and is surmounted by a number of render urns. Study includes a brief history of the junction and a statement of significance. Study also includes Four black and white photographs of the junction and of architectural details of the tram tracks. 2. A letter from the Conservation Manager of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to the manager of the Planning Section for the City of Glen Eira, dated 15/06/2001 and attached to a six-page Classification Report. The letter informs of the Classification of the Grand Union Junction at the intersection of Balaclava and Hawthorn Road by the national trust, signed by Conservation Manager Ian Pausacker. Classification Report includes details such as the date of construction, a statement of significance, history of the junction, physical description of the junction and the condition of the junction at the time of writing. Report also includes a map of the Melbourne Tram Network drafted by Keith Kings and dated 01/005/1956, with illustration of the layout of fifteen tram depots, and updated aerial illustration of the Grand Union Junction, and a further map of Melbourne Tramways developed by North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Co. and Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, drafted by Keith Kings and dated January 1914 with illustrations of three tram depots. 3. Two articles from the Caulfield Leader written by Aaron Langmaid and dated 13/02/2007 and the Melbourne Bayside Weekly dated 21/02/2007 written by Joanne Sim, both concerning the Grand Union Junction. The article from the Caulfield Leader includes a picture of Executive Officer of the council of Tramway Museum of Australia Craig Tooke in front of the intersection. The article from the Bayside Weekly includes a picture of a tram passing through the junction and a brief history of the junction and tram network in Caulfield. ... / Caulfield Conservation Study by Andrew Ward dated September 1994.../ Caulfield Conservation Study by Andrew Ward dated September 1994 ...This file contains seven items about the significance of this building and how this was established : 1/ Photocopies of a handwritten application (in duplicate) by Walter Kay of Elsternwick dated 13/10/1985 and Rodney H Bush’s dated 16/10/1985 to the Historic Buildings Council to register the former Elsternwick Post Office building, and an original typewritten letter dated 17/10/1985 from the Historic Buildings Council to Caulfield and Historic Society advising them of an application and inviting them to submit relevant information about the building with a copy of application attached. 2/ Six pieces of correspondence between various interested parties (Caulfield Council , Caulfield Historical Society, National Trust, of Australia and Ministry for Planning and Environment on behalf of Historic Buildings Council, Victoria) about the significance of the former Elsternwick Post Office building and the progress of efforts to include it on the Register of Historic buildings. Dated between November 1985 and May 1986. 3/ Two pieces of correspondence between the Caulfield Progress Association and the Caulfield Historical Society dated April and May 1986, regarding the efforts of the Historical Society to save the former Elsternwick Post Office building. 4/ Two pieces of ephemera by the Caulfield Progress Association, one original undated and one photocopy undated in 1986. Both appealing to the public for support to help the former Elsternwick Post Office building and to protest a proposal to demolish it, by Caulfield Council. 5/Original newspaper article dated 07/06/1989 from the Malvern-Caulfield Progress newspaper written by Robert Carmody. The article talks about the approval by the Historic Buildings Council of Caulfield Council’s restoration program of the former Elsternwick Post Office building worth approximately $850,000. The refurbishment would consist of a shop and office space which would then be rented out. Mayor Emil Braun outlines the progress to implement the plans. 6/ Caulfield Conservation Study by Andrew Ward dated September 1994 of former Elsternwick Post Office Building. The building plans for the Elizabethan Style building were approved in 1891. The original timber verandahs were replaced by the present brickworks in circa 1918 rear extensions in 1941-42. Similar Post Offices were built at Kew, Queenscliff and Portarlington. 7/ Computer printout dated 19/03/2010 of Statement of Significance held by the Victorian Heritage database of the former Elsternwick Post Office Building. It was built in 1891 in the ‘Queen Anne’ style. The substantial two story red brick building was set on a bluestone plinth with an ornate façade incorporating cement dressings. There is a brief summary of the settlement and development of the Elsternwick area with mention of how important the building is to the Elsternwick Community. Its editor Crosbie Morrison lobbied for a National Parks Authority which was finally set up under Morrison's directorship in 1957. During the 1940's and 1950's Crosbie Morrison (1900 - 1958) became Australia's best known naturalist. As a journalist with commercial radio and the Australian Broadcasting Commission, he made regular national nature study broadcasts to schools and other radio listeners for 20 years. He was the editor of Wild Life, a magazine which fostered interest in Australia's natural history and conservation, from 1938-54. (ref. This book contains information on historic French nails and fixings, being translations from the French Masters compared and contrasted to the Anglo-American tradition. It has been compiled by Chris How, a retired Civil/Structural Engineer who lives in Warrnambool, Victoria. He has been involved with conservation and heritage buildings for half a century and it was working with pioneer materials and techniques that first stimulated his interest in historic nails. He has completed a Master’s degree in England and made a special study of French and Germanic framing and its spread across Europe. This involved similar studies in Denmark, Belgium, the Baltic countries and Australia. This book is of interest because it was written by a local Warrnambool resident, one who has researched and studied many buildings in Warrnambool and district through an examination of the building materials used, especially the nails and fixings. This is a soft cover book of 126 pages The cover is grey with a grey, black and white sketch on the front cover and a colour photograph on the back page. The book has contents pages, a list of tables and figures, a list of the source of illustrations and credits, a foreword, acknowledgements, a preface, eight chapters, a glossary of terms and appendices. The Land Conservation Council was established by the Land Conservation Act 1970.These maps provide an assessment of the Alpine area at the time the maps were created. Some of the topics eg. Rainfall and water resources may change over the years thus providing a comparative analysis. In June 1987, the government directed the LCC to carry out a special investigation of the social, recreational, cultural and ecological values of rivers and streams in Victoria, and to make recommendations on the use of these rivers and how their identified values can best be protected. Notices announcing the commencement of the investigation were published in the Victoria Government Gazette and in Victorian newspapers in November 1987. A descriptive report was published in September 1989. The Council received 75 submissions following the publication of this report. After considering these submissions, the Council formulated its proposed recommendations, which were published in November 1990. The Council received 177 submissions commenting on the proposed recommendations. The Council published its final recommendations in June 1991. While welcomed by many, the study cut across the interests of other groups and was perceived to be particularly threatening to water authorities. The investigation resulted in a legislated system of 17 heritage rivers (with significant natural, recreational, scenic and heritage values) and natural catchment areas across Victoria. -
