This is the emblem of EMU (Experimental Miltary Unit) who were officially known as Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV). The unit was formed in 1967 and integrated into the US ARmy 135th Assauly Helicopter Company until 1971. The February 1969 RANHFV Report of Proceedings contained the first reference to the unique unofficial badges worn by the men of the 135th AHC. It stated: "In an endeavour to boost the morale and unity of the Company, the Commanding Officer offered $25 and a 3-day pass to Vungtau for the designer of a new Company Crest and NAMAE Hughes’ entry won the competition. It is a very impressive combination of an anchor and US Army wings in a laurel wreath with USA-RAN inscribed in a scroll above the motto; GET THE B... JOB DONE written below". A further reference was made to the badge in the 16 May 1969 Royal Australian Navy "Navy News", which ran a story on the emergence of this unique badge that has become synonymous with the unit and remains so to this day. The first sculpture awarded the Shire of Eltham 'Art in Public Places' Award/Commission. The Judges were Inge King, Jenny Zimmer and Daryl Jackson. The work deals with the juxtaposition of suburban and rural surroundings. This scupture is a typical example of the artist's oevre of the period. This sculptre is site specific and refers to the nature of the environment. The colour - bushfire red / sienna - alludes to the history of fire in the urban/rural fringe and the title, as well as the sculpture's shapes, forms and material refer to the natural and local elements. Judges report noted: "The most vital and expressive work for the site...with a great sense of dynamic movement and vibrant colour. Its' abstract forms will enliven the surroundings and the urban and natural environment. This work is the most appropriate for the site and expressive of the dynamics of an evolving community in which artistic discourse and debate has always thrived." The work has acquired the status of a major landmark from the National Trust. The Breeze is an abstract work made out of welded steel and painted in enamel in bush fire red / sienna. It comprises a series of flat, cut-out shapes, interlocking at different angles, giving the impression of being hinged together rather than fixed. The work references nature and the built environment. Its geometric shapes suggest man-made structures within industry and suburban life, while rural areas can be identified by the organic flame-like shapes fanned by the wind. The circular cut-out in the eye mimics the sun, symbolising the intense heat of the Australian climate, while the colour red alludes to the history of bushfire within the urban and rural fringe. Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.Block of 200 tickets - brown ink on off white paper, denomination 18c, lettered A418400 to A418599, headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Provincial Tramways. On rear in brown ink is a SEC advertisement "ELECTRICITY makes life easier" with the SEC's little boy wrapped in a towel logo. The 200 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a small cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. The ticket number is in black ink. Carbon copy of a handwritten letter with typed copy of same, to Mr Blake from Albert Richardson dated 5th Sept. 1971. In the letter he says he enclosed a photocopy of the 'History of Victoria Hill', which he completed on behalf of the Rotary Club of South Bendigo. In response to an application to the National Trust for Classification, he received a letter from Colonel Birch and also two typewritten copies of his manuscript, properly referenced from his marginal notes. The Society had played host to the Dandenong and Preston Historical Societies and the members were pleased with what they saw on the Victoria Hill and other places. While there are some references from time to time to a war memorial fund in both Mission Annual reports from the 1930s and news clippings the actual organisation has not been well researched. More information is needed about formation and member details. As the board primarily was designed for WW1 it may have fallen out of use post WW2. Bob Snape always included in his kit a few second hand Baedeker's guide books, as well as the 'Belgium and Holland' volume. Bob was a keen observer and commentator and used these guide books as any interested tourist. Bob's letters home often made reference to the history, culture and architecture of the countries he visited in the course of the war. In the 1930s, the Studley Park Trust decided to cater for young children by constructing wading pools in the Studley Park Reserve where the Collins Bridge crosses into Kew. The earliest references to the pools in newspaper articles and letters to the editor appear in the late 1930s. The eventual closing date of the Studley Park Pools has not been discovered, but it was clearly still in existence in 1940 when a representative of the Trust described the facility as one of many public fixtures requiring regular maintenance. Colour photos of Joan Miller, a Legacy widow and volunteer that was actively involved in Legacy over many years. Between 1985 to 1998 she was the Widows' Club Co-ordinator, organising many events and functions for the widows. This photo was published in the regular column she wrote in editions of The Answer. The article was published in 2018 and is a good summary of her important work.
