Altona is a suburb of Melbourne, 13 km south-west of Melbourne's CBD and located within the City of Hobsons Bay Altona Police Station opened as a temporary police station in 1919 in the Melbourne District. It was on the corner Sargood and Blyth Streets. It was staffed by one 1st Constable. The original police station was in a small room attached to the front of a 5-roomed weather-board dwelling with an iron roof on land measuring 66' x 165'. There was also a kitchen, vestibule, wash-house, office, one W.C. and a lock-up. In 1929 it became part of the Bourke District. On 31 March 1958 it moved into newly built government premises at 51-53 Blyth Street, on the corner of Bent Street. The building consisted of a cream brick veneer police residence and police station with cell. Staff was increased to a Sergeant in Charge and 3 Constables. A new police station was opened in Altona North on 7th October 1979. The Altona Police Station remained as a sub-station for a few a short time until the building was sold. July 2019 - a new police station is being constructed at 1 Galvin Street, Altona. Aitken's Gap, otherwise known as The Gap or Buttlejork, and 3km west of Sunbury, was established as a township in 1845. It is in the area which is now bordered by the Calder Highway and Gap Road. The village was named after John Aitken, a Port Phillip pastoralist who took up the Mount Aitken run in 1836. Aitken's Gap Police Barracks (in the District of Bourke) opened in 1853 and was staffed by two Mounted Constables and one Foot Constable. The gaol (used to house prisoners and also gold en route to Melbourne) was built in 1857 from bluestone quarried in the area. The roof was made of slate. In 1861 it was staffed by 1 Mounted Senior Constable and 1 Foot Constable. The Barracks closed in 1863 when the Bendigo rail line was completed and the gold was transported to Melbourne by rail. All the buildings, except the gaol, were moved to Sunbury. The land was sold in 1870 and in 1989 the current owner donated the building to the Sunbury Police. Amherst, a former gold rush town, is located 13 kilometres south-west of Avoca on the Pyrenees Highway in the Pyrenees Shire in Victoria, Australia. It is 183 kilometres north west of Melbourne. The police station, in Camp Street, opened in 1853 and was originally in the District of Castlemaine. In 1857 it came under the District of Avoca, in 1858 the District of Carisbrook, in 1859 the District of Avoca, in 1866 the District of Maryborough, in 1879 the South Western District, and Central District in 1883. The station closed on 8 August 1892. In 1861 the station was staffed by 1 Mounted Constable, 1 Foot Senior Constable and 2 Foot Constables. Apollo Bay is a coastal town in southwestern Victoria. It is situated on the eastern side of Cape Otway, along the edge of the Barham River and on the Great Ocean Road, in the Colac Otway Shire. The original township was surveyed in 1853 and named Middleton. In 1881 the town was renamed Krambruk which was changed to Apollo Bay in 1898. The Krambruk Police Station was opened on 7 March 1888 in the Southern District on land opposite the site of the current Mechanics' Institute and changed its name to the Apollo Bay Police Station on 1 September 1990. It came under the Barwon District in 1948 and "Lima" Western District from 4 March 1990. In 1930 the police station was located to 29 Nelson Street. It was a seven-roomed weather-board dwelling on three-quarters of an acre of land. It consisted of six rooms of pine, lined and painted; one pantry; one bathroom and wash-house; one hall; one office and one W.C.. There was stabling for one horse and one cell for prisoners. It was staffed by one Mounted Constable. In the early 1970s land was acquired at 31 Nelson Street and a new police station was constructed. This was a three-roomed brick building with a cell block at the rear. By the time it closed in 2005 it had been extended twice. On 17 November 2006 the current Apollo Bay Police Station opened in its current location at 35a Nelson Street, on the corner of Cartwight Street). Apsley is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is on the Wimmera Highway, in the Shire of West Wimmera, 420 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, and 7 kilometres east of the South Australian border. Apsley Police Station opened on 29th November 1884 and was originally located in Wallace Street. It was staffed by one Foot Constable (motor cycle). The building was described, in 1930, as a four-roomed dwelling with an iron roof, set on a quarter of an acre of land. There was a bathroom, a WC, wash-house and a garage. An office adjoined the house and there was also a lockup. The station moved several times until the mid 1960s when a timber residence was moved onto land adjacent to the Post Office. The building is believed to have been transported from the Stawell area. Apsley is one of a handful of one-man police stations in Victoria and its current location, including residence, is at 19 Splatt Street. Armadale is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 7 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Armadale Police Station opened, in Melbourne Police District, on 11 May 1885. Its original location is unknown, but in 1890 it is listed in the Sands & McDougall directory as at 295 Hight Street. From 1985-1920 it was located at 20/22 Auburn Grove, 1925-1930 at 769 High Street and 1935-1946 at 3 Cheel Street. The station closed on 28 January 1946. The sub-division east of Orrong Rd was incorporated into Malvern Sub-district and west of Orrong Road into Prahran Sub-district. In a special 1930 issue of the Victoria Police Gazette the Armadale Police Station was described as a seven-roomed brick dwelling with a tiled roof on land measuring 127' x 104' x 98'. There was also a bathroom and W.C., a wash-house, office, and a lock-up (one cell). This is probably a description of the Cheel Street police station. Ascot Vale is an inner suburb 6 km north-west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in the local government area of the City of Moonee Valley. Ascot Vale police station was opened on 31 October 1887 in the Melbourne Police District. From 1900-1905 it was located at 54 Parade, Ascot Vale; from 1910-1925 at 71 St Leonards Road; from 1930-1953 at 37 St Leonards Road. In 1953 it was relocated to government owned premises at 111 Union Road until the police station closed on 1st May 1970 and the Sub-district was divided between Flemington and Moonee Ponds police stations. The former police station was used by the Crime Car Squad until about 1987 when the premises were damaged by fire. The police station at 37 St Leonards Road was described as a six-roomed brick dwelling with slate and iron roof on land measuring 150' x 50'. There was also a bathroom and W.C., wash-house, office and lock-up with one cell. It was staffed by one second-class sergeant and four foot constables. The purpose-built police station at 111 Union Road included a four-roomed residence with the exterior clad in rough cast Conite and a tile roof. Thomas Newman McIntyre (1846 - 1918) was the sole survivor of the police party murdered by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek on 28 October 1878. Importantly, McIntyre was later the key witness in Ned Kelly's murder trial. Edward Monk (1844 - 1928) was a selector living in the area, who accompanied the police party sent to returned to collect the bodies of the murdered police. Henry Pewtress was a sub-inspector of Victoria Police. He was in charge of the Mansfield area when the three police were killed by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek. Pewtress organised the search party but having little local knowledge he went to see Dr Samuel Reynolds and others. They located the bodies of Lonigan and Scanlan easily, but did not find Kenney's until three days later. Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick had a questionable character even before being posted to Greta Police Station in 1878. He made an attempt to arrest Dan Kelly but did not follow correct procedure. He went by himself and had also been drinking beforehand. While Fitzpatrick stated that he was assaulted and suffered a minor gun show wound at the hands of "Ned" Kelly and other family members, his claims were disputed by them.
