This flying suit would have been worn by a pilot of the Royal Australian Air Force. It is a drill suit and most likely was not used in active service. This flying suit dates to 1988. The telescope is original to the Wilsons Promontory Lightstation and was provided by the Department of Shipping and Transport in about 1900. The device magnifies images of distant objects through its curved interior mirrors, and lightkeepers used this telescope to monitor and record the names of ships, the time they passed, and their direction, as well as read meanings of flags and other visual signals communicated by vessels. The telescope is similar to Cape Nelson’s two metre long telescope, which is included in the VHR registration for the Cape Nelson Lightstation. It is particularly important for its good condition, completeness and confirmed provenance and has first level contributory significance to the cultural heritage values of the lightstation..1 Brass telescope, cylindrical tube shape with mobile interfolding sections. The forty-two navigational flags appear to be a complete set. Their purpose-built, grey painted wooden locker is divided into forty-two pigeonholes, each holding one of the rolled up flags. It is simply built and stands on short legs and was originally open-fronted, but has since been covered with a protective clear Perspex panel. The set of alphabetic and numeric visual signalling flags (including substitute and answering pennants) are made of wool in various colour combination designs, with canvas sewn to one end that is threaded with hemp rope. Some of the flags have metal clips attached to the rope. The flags were used for communicating messages to passing ships. Knowledge of visual signalling was mandatory for all lightkeepers and all stations maintained a set of flags. Although used for centuries, visual flag signalling formally developed in the nineteenth century and was published internationally as a system in 1857. By the early twentieth century it had developed into an effective means of conveying all kinds of short range visual messages. Most flags are in good condition and their first level significance is enhanced by their completeness and integrity as a set still housed in their original locker, and by the signal charts that remain in the museum collection which offer further insights into visual signalling.1 - 42. Ice skates used to skate on Lake Catani. Ice skating was a popular activity for guest and visitors to Mt Buffalo. Ice skates were provided for hire by the the first Lessee of the Chalet, John Newton and also Norwegian born Hilda Samsing, who took over from him in 1919 and did much to pioneer and promote winter sports in the Victorian Alpine region . Ice cover on the Lake has not been sufficient for safe skating for many decades. 'After its initial popularity, skating at Mount Buffalo dwindled in the post-war years. According to Museum Victoria curator, Michelle Stevenson, few collections hold historic ice-skates, so any early examples identified in the Chalet collection will be important for their rarity." This ring belonged to Captain William Henry Bacchus who was one of the first British colonists to establish a farming property on Wurundjeri and Wadawurrung First Nations people lands 55 kilometers west of Melbourne. The land occupied by Bacchus in 1838 came to be known by the early colonists as Bacchus’s Marsh before later changing officially to Bacchus Marsh. The ring is believed to have been made to commemorate the death of Captain Bacchus’s father Wm (William) Bacchus in Somerset, England in 1788.This ring has significance because it is an object associated with a significant historical person in the history of the region of Bacchus Marsh. It is a rare, probably unique example of an 18th century mourning ring connected to the local community. Bandmaster Hugh McMahon is noted for conducing the McMahon's Brass Band (Hillgrove Brass Band) from 1892 - 1900. He was a very famous bandmaster and he, and his brothers, were all extremely competent musicians. In 1897 the McMahon's band competed in Tamworth and won the competition. Their closet rival, the Hillgrove Town Band was placed third. Unfortunately the McMahon's Band was wound up in 1900 when the six McMahon brother followed their brother John to the Western Australia goldfields at Kalgoorlie-Boulder.The photo is remarkable for its condition and completeness. Here we have a photo of 20 bandsmen who have just won a competition dressed in very neat suits. We can also see a distinctive crest on the bass drum and the two trombone players are playing valve trombones. The photo is also significant as it shows one of the two Hillgrove brass bands that were in existence at the time and this was while Hillgrove was a bustling mining town. This apron was made by Theresa Dunn (néé Wallis) of Breakaway Creek, Victoria. Born in 1912, Theresa came from a farming family and left school at the age of 14 following the death of her mother to help care for her younger siblings. Well known for her needlework, Theresa and her sister Eileen exhibited widely and later judged work for Victorian and interstate needlework competitions. Sticklers for perfection, they were known to always look at the back of the work first. In 1935 Theresa married Allan Dunn. This apron formed part of her glory box; a collection of items saved in preparation for married life. Never used, it was donated to the Ballarat Apron Festival in 2017 by Theresa’s daughter. Made by Theresa Dunn of Breakaway Creek in the 1930s, this apron reflects early-20th century ideals of thrift and resourcefulness that were highly regarded as desirable feminine traits. By making do and adapting waste materials, such as hessian sacks and fabric scraps, into practical clothing, women could demonstrate their sewing expertise and ingenuity; highly prized qualities during times of economic depression or frugalness. The type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson flameproof telephone was introduced in 1937 and certified by the British Mines Department as flameproof for Petroleum and Acetone Vapours, in 1938. It was designed specifically for outdoor use in areas where there may be exposure to inflammable vapours and hazardous chemicals such as petroleum. Commercial tin openers first appeared in the mid 19th century and this model dates from the early 20th century. An improved version when a second serrated wheel was added came into operation about the mid 1920s. Tins (now cans) of food with sealed tops became popular in the 20th century and all households needed a tin opener. Today the can opener is still used but increasingly the can lids have an inbuilt clip that is pulled out to open the can.This tin opener has been retained as an early model of a tin opener from the past. It was used locally in Wodonga and donated by a Wodonga resident. This lanyard was owned by Matthew Calvitto. Matthew moved to Woodend with his family at the age of one. He commenced his career in the 56th Battalion Army Reserve unit. In 1999 or early 2000 he volunteered to join the regular Army. He was posted to the 6th Royal Australian Army Regiment, D company. His initial training was at either Shaulwater Bay or Conundra. After his training he served for 6 months in Timor, in either the second or third rotation. Matthew and the other members of the D Company received battle honours. Matthew was their forward scout, as well as a marksman, which you need to qualify for every year.As an item that belonged to Matthew Calvitto, a local Woodend veteran who received battle honours for his service in Timor, this lanyard has social and historic significance. The provenance of the item is know as it was donated by family members. The item is also represenantive of a type of military lanyard that was issued to Army personnel during the late 20th century. The HD Holden was introduced by GMH in 1965 and for a variety of reasons was considered the ugly duckling. The HD replaced the large selling and very popular EH (1964) model. the dramatic change in design from the square slopped EH to the sharp edged shape of the HD was met with some buyer resistance and was highly criticised by the motor writing fraternity. The unusual front guard shape, which became known as kidney cutters, which assisted with the unpopular impression, resulted in lower sales.
